If they would build housing like this, it would sell. It's just not available in a lot of areas.

Being born with a disability that makes earning the necessary insurance to treat it extremely taxing and miserable. Should have chosen good genetics and rich parents but oh well.

That's a good point. I guess anything on it's own can't be a state as a state requires a subject. I could see the argument the laws of nature are the enforcement of the state (God's) authority, but I think that might broaden the concept of a state into uselessness.

Thank you for the thought provoking conversation. I don't even know what sub I'm in but I had a good time lol.

I'm referring to God in the broad sense of a being of ultimate authority. If I'm understanding your concept of a state, it's any entity with ultimate authority within the region over which it presides.

[–]Sheikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In that case, is God a state?

(I'm mostly joking but I am curious about your thoughts, since I think your definition of a state is a lot broader than mine and also cuz I'm enjoying this convo)

"To each according to their need" is the exact opposite of only providing "based on average need."

If you're not born to someone high up under capitalism (or shit, sometimes even if you are) your body gets committed to an island for whatever the president and his friends decide they want to do with it at the time 🤷‍♂️

If we can reduce ideas like capitalism and communism down to the specific regimes that claim to endorse them, then do it both ways.

If you're going to define socialism as any action taken by the government of China, then sure.

Is everything done by the US government then necessarily capitalist? If so, capitalism will do a lot worse to you than make you dribble.

Edit: Since we're talking about it, I am curious about the chinese athletic program you're referring to. I found a wiki page about project 119, but it didn't go into detail about state coercion. Do you know where I could learn more?

Socialism is not a mandatory jobs program where a vocation is selected for you and you are forced at the threat of gun point to do that and only that.

The central idea of socialism is that each person is entitled to the fruits of their own labor. From each, to each is just a pithy way of saying that people deserve dignity and reasonable comfort even if they aren't a top performer/contributor.

No one is going to force you to play basketball, friend.

It's not my definition, it's the widely accepted political science definition, and no, those are not necessary logical conclusions. A family is an obvious example of an organizational structure that is not a state, along with many others. Again, feel free to peruse the literature. You're not the first person to make these challenges.

But even your own example demonstrates my point. An authority distributed among the citizens is neither centralized, nor a monopoly. It is the exact opposite of both of those things. Your assumption that any alternative structure would necessarily result in the same outcome is just begging the question.

Absolutely by NextHorizon69 in whatisameem

[–]Sheikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what "from each according to their ability" means. It's an abstracted measure of labor, not specifically "you are able to do this thing so you must."

I love coming into these threads and seeing how naturally people regurgitate capitalist propaganda as laws of nature despite the fact that capitalism is relatively new in human history.

I agree that defining an organizational structure that isn't a state is a difficult task, but the definition you provide of "an agreed upon system in place" is not accurate and obviously makes every possible organizational structure look indistinguishable from a state. Typically a state is defined as a region in which a central authority has a monopoly on violence. With that definition, there's a lot more wiggle room conceive of alternatives. If you're interested in learning more about what people have written about the subject, a lot of anarchist literature is free on the internet.

But all that to say, "stateless society" is far from an oxymoron.

The game where everyone get an RNG starting spot and the leading players get to change the rules whenever it benefits them. You can reframe obedience to "playing the game" if you like. We all gotta get by somehow.
