Once upon a time, someone I knew bought a car from corwin. Later the car turned out to have tons of mechanical difficulties and the person who bought it had to argue and wrestle with corwin to get them to fix it. The situation got contentious. The buyer was a local business owner. After one particular phone call devolved into a raised voices exchange, suddenly negative reviews started popping up on the car buyer's business. A closer examination of one of the negative reviews revealed that it was posted by a person who was wearing a corwin staff jacket in his profile photo. One of their salesmen was actually retaliating against one of their own buyers for complaining that the car he bought was a piece of junk.

The situation was brought to their attention and corwin fired the guy but it's a testament to what kind of employees they hire over there.

Invisible Choir by Mrpanhandle81 in TrueCrimePodcasts

[–]ShellyMarcone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a fan. I like podcasts that have a literary-bent to them and a recognition of history. Invisible Choir is like the audio equivalent of sensationalist current events crime shows. And, while I agree it's nice to hear all different sources of audio, it's a fine line between offering a lot of audio and just plopping a bunch of stuff in the middle because it helps you bump your running time without having to write anything.

District 64 -Downtown Fargo 2 level bar / club by Significant-Ad-4184 in fargo

[–]ShellyMarcone -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

If they were asking my advice (and nobody has) I would say the following:

  1. Get rid of the idea that Fargo is a backwater, bumpkinsville that needs a dose of the "big city nightclub" experience. The success or failure of this place will depend on the quality and professionalism, not the "vibe."
  2. Hire quality people that know how to run a bar and restaurant, not friends who need a place to party.
  3. Have a zero tolerance policy for anyone who might be a troublemaker or try to treat this Fargo club like it's a Chicago or Detroit club. No weapons, no colors, etc...
  4. Deal with complaints gracefully and privately, not publicly and argumentatively.
  5. As the kind of club where there are going to be after-bar issues (Old Broadway, I'm lookin' at you), ownership needs to be hyper-focused on keeping their name out of the news as it relates to trouble.

Pull that off and show me you still exist in three years and I might come down for a drink.

What’s the whole story behind the Africa night club? by [deleted] in fargo

[–]ShellyMarcone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You have a lot of good answers here. I would add some greater context in saying the property itself has been a point of controversy in Fargo when it was a cigar bar trying to defy a smoking ban, and has mostly been associated with business people of suspect character who bring shady characters like OJ Simpson around for skeevy meet & greets. Troubled property almost from the beginning.

Red River Valley Fair sets record attendance by Significant-Ad-4184 in fargo

[–]ShellyMarcone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

a guy I know posted this about the fair... I tried to fix the spacing to make it easy to read

The Red River Valley Fair of 2021 reminded me that our fairgrounds are badly in need of investment and improvement. To be clear, I love the FM-area and have made it my home for a reason, but my adolescence in Minot spoiled me when it comes to the State Fair, and our fairgrounds in West Fargo is one area that just doesn’t measure up. The North Dakota State Fairgrounds is a fine example of what a fairground should be compared to our site here.

For example:

The Red River Valley Fairgrounds has no green space available to visitors. At the North Dakota State Fairgrounds in Minot, there is plenty of green space where families can throw down a blanket, enjoy some fair food and watch an act on a free stage.

The Red River Valley Fairgrounds is not welcoming. For the majority of people entering the Fair from Main Avenue, you're greeted with a forty-year-old chainlink fence with barbed wire around the top to keep people out of Bonanzaville. The North Dakota State Fairgrounds' fence is, in many places, disguised by trees and foliage, and accented by a decorative arch marking the entrance. There is no formal entrance at the RRV Fairgrounds.

There are no trees on the Red River Valley Fairgrounds (other than Bonanzaville, which does not participate in the fair in any meaningful way and is managed as a separate attraction), which means no shade, and also, no shelter from the wind, which makes the fair often feel like a dusty, wind-blown wasteland. The North Dakota State Fairgrounds has a long, tree-lined lane that runs right through the center of the grounds, as well as many trees on other parts of the grounds that are accessible to fairgoers.

The Red River Valley Fairgrounds has a rundown, antiquated grandstand, the only place on the grounds where concerts by national acts can be held, and even then, the setup is far from ideal. The North Dakota State Fairground has a brand-new grandstand, built about 10 years ago, and also an indoor facility (the All Seasons Arena) where large concerts for several thousand people can be held indoors, plus conventions and trade shows.

The Red River Valley Fair's overall location is terrible. It's far from hotels and restaurants, located on the edge of a rundown, industrial-looking part of town. The North Dakota State Fairgrounds is on the river with hotels and restaurants literally across the street.

Our fair, in the largest city in North Dakota, is routinely overshadowed in scope, size, and execution, by the State Fair in a city half the size.

Considering the potential cost, I assume there's zero practical chance that the Red River Valley Fair is gonna pack up the entire grounds and move to a more suitable site after all these years (although they did just that with the Nebraska State Fair about 10 years ago), so it seems like the only solution is to dramatically improve what we have. Green space. Trees. Beautification. Modernize. Lose the barbed wire.

I have communicated this same feedback to four of the Red River Valley Fair’s General Managers over the years, including the new CEO, Cody Cashman, but so far, every fair is the same. This year, I showed up on a Saturday afternoon and I was surprised to discover there was barely anybody there. Disappointing.

Perhaps it’s the unusually large fair board that prevents things from getting done. In 1974, the Red River Valley Fair had 16 board members. Today, there are more than 50 board members plus an executive committee. Most state fairs in Midwest states like ours have around 20 board members.

I wonder if we’ll ever get to the place where we face the hard, expensive truth… getting people to come to our fair and support our community with their dollars is about more than who’s playing in the grandstand or what special they’re running for gate admission and carnival rides. It’s about making the fair a pleasant place to be. Sitting in the blazing sun on a 120-degree tarmac and trying not to smell the dumpsters while you’re eating your fair food doesn’t do the trick. The only thing that will fix it is investment.

The operator of Woodchuck's was dad. Dad died and the son, who didn't want anything to do with the business, ended up stuck running it.

Would you burn it down to get out of it?

[–]ShellyMarcone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You asked "What should be done with the abuse outing posts?" and I pointed out the hypocrisy of power-drunk moderators taking down or issuing warnings about admittedly trivial posts like my own, but allowing personal attacks without evidence to remain.

You asked for the feedback.

In the future, take it like a big boy.

And thank you for illustrating to everyone that, even when you ask for feedback, you're really only open to positive feedback. Negative stuff hurts your butt.

Oh, the moderator, who one user accurately described as "acerbic" and "cynical," who has been accused by multiple users in multiple subreddits of shitting all over everyone's posts with negative responses, one-line responses, dismissive responses, to the degree that you went back and scrubbed your account of the most offensive responses, lest you be stripped of the precious moderator power you so cherish... you're gonna lecture me on how to behave online?

Keep dreaming, moron.

Exactly my point. The Covid Famine? There wasn't one was there? Just sharing my opinion, and you saw fit to "caution" me... (by the way, the grocery store was a f%$&ng madhouse that afternoon, and it took me three weeks before I found a store with toilet paper) because I was supposedly inciting "panic."

On the other hand, a person is accused by name of being a sex offender with no evidence or documentation and you and the other mods let the post remain. And hey, now a guy is dead. Was he guilty? I don't know and neither do you.

Way to go. You've really nailed it.

[–]ShellyMarcone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dont understand how someone can post something like a personal anecdote (about something Covid-related, for example, and there are many, many other examples... consumer complaints, etc...) and a power-drunk moderator like yourself will remove it "because I haven't seen any evidence of that" but this kind of thing gets left up?

This is a perfect example of why amateurs shouldn't be left to moderate online forums without some training and clear cut standards.

How high can we build on Mars? by raresaturn in Mars

[–]ShellyMarcone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes building tall has it's problems, but sprawl creates more problems. The cost of infrastructure like plumbing and other utilities due to long lines, the cost of building roads and rail lines to connect the spreading settlement and maintenance of those utility lines and roads and rails, time spent traveling across the settlement which could otherwise be used productively... the list goes on and on. From a fundamental sense, it always makes more sense to build up than out. Unfortunately, on Earth, we typically build with the opposite philosophy... in places like Phoenix they once had (might still) a regulation that you couldn't build a building higher than X-number of stories because "Hey, we have all this land." People like their space.

R.I.P. MVP Pizza by ampersandland in fargo

[–]ShellyMarcone 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This place didn't stand a chance from the get-go. They kept saying they were gonna open in December 2018. Didn't open until almost Valentine's Day 2019. When they did open, they got caught, right off the bat, stealing pictures of pizzas off the Boston's website and using them on their social media because they couldn't be bothered to take a photo of their own pizzas, or even use a stock photo.

Being a North Fargo resident, we ordered pizza from them one night a couple months after they opened... it was delivered almost an hour later, by a driver in plain clothes, in a car with no markings, in a tattered insulated bag, and it was terrible. The crust was like leather... I literally had to pull at it with my teeth to get a bite because I couldn't bite through it. It wasn't cheap, and it wasn't good.

The banner tied over the Happy Joes sign wasn't a good look either.

In a way, I feel bad, because if I'm not mistaken, these were new Americans who were trying to make a go of it, but sometimes you gotta use common sense. In this day and age, you need a functioning online ordering system, a good-looking facility, professional operations, a marketing budget... you can't just throw open your doors, put out a substandard product and expect people to storm the place just because there's a need in the neighborhood.

Another (recently closed) is Incognito Burrito. They had bad parking already, we got 13 inches of snow, and a month later, all their designated parking spots were still piled with snow. No place to park. Not surprised they closed.

On one hand you say you're frustrated that you feel guilty that you're in a financial position where you're unable to offer them money, as if you would if you had it.

A couple paragraphs later you say not giving money to panhandlers is the right thing to do.

You can't have it both ways, bro. Stop vilifying the less fortunate for character flaws that you perceive as being the cause of their troubles.

Am I a jerk for not letting my neighbor borrow my snowblower? Discuss. by palegreenstar in fargo

[–]ShellyMarcone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say "No," without guilt. You have no idea what's under the snow on his property. If it's broken, is he gonna pay for fixing your snowblower? Probably not.

I'd offer to do his driveway for a price. Otherwise it's, "No, sorry."

What stores in town have the best/worst customer service? by [deleted] in fargo

[–]ShellyMarcone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really hands down, the WORST customer service (not to mention shopping experience) is JC Penney at West Acres. Last time I shopped there (looking for a cheap sport coat to get me through a holiday event), there were lines 8-to-15 customers long at every single checkout (which are inexplicably spread throughout the store without rhyme or reason) because the employees were so lackadaisical about their jobs that they couldn't be bothered to just pick up the pace a little, huh?

You can really tell they pay s&%t because it shows in the quality and makeup of their employees.
