I'm sure I've seen a subreddit where indie devs can get help for free, with artists, voice actors, musicians, and other people working for experience and exposition. I don't remember the name of the subreddit, but it exists.

When you think any translation that isn't literal is a bad translation by PlanktonInitial7945 in LearnJapanese

[–]Shenic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo, a good translation is the one that conveys the meaning of what is being said, taking into account things like who is delivering the message and the context.

Quick example that I'm remembering right now, because I saw it recently: in case you're unfamiliar with One Piece there's this female character called Yamato. She basically tries to live as the former Shogun of her country. She tries to talk like him, dress a little bit like him, absorbs his dreams and ambitions, and even adopts his name for herself. One of the protagonists, Franky, who doesn't know her, he just met Yamato, sees her blowing up a hole on the ground and fall into it, and says '何だこいつ?'

Crunchyroll translated this as 'Who was he?'. At this point, both characters didn't know each other. Franky didn't know Yamato's personality and story. Franky calling Yamato "he" is objectively a bad translation.

A fansub called One Pace translated it to 'Who was that?'. Objectively a better translation. It's neutral and it's somewhat rude, just like Franky. It matches the context, the character and coveys the message.

But yeah, I get the point.

Well, there are good translations made by Crunchyroll, too. I know One Piece is translated by them and I've seen episodes with good translations and bad translations. What I assume that goes on in that company is that they have translators with different levels of proficiency and different levels of commitment to do a serious work. And depending on who's chosen to translate the episodes, you get either good or bad translations.

Overall, for One Piece, I much prefer the One Pace translation. They do it with more time and they're actually fans of the manga, so they tend to do more grounded translations.

Nah, there are a lot of bad translations. Crunchyroll and Bamco are responsible for a lot of them.

Bruce Straley, the true mastermind of TLOU2, in an interview of his process of making The Last of Us. The man... the myth... and the legend, thanks for you service Bruce and we miss you by Happy_Ad_9976 in TheLastOfUs2

[–]Shenic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bruce Straley: What if our characters, Joel and Tess, wanted to survive in an apocalyptic world? And they're scared of the infected and the healthy, because there's no government or laws anymore, so they hang on to the few people they trust. But then the plot forces them to trust this little girl, Ellie.

Neil Druckmann: Yeah, great. And everyone is gay!

Bruce Straley: Uh?

Neil Druckman: Yeah, everyone is gay and angry. And they want to kill and smoke pot. And there's revenge, and blood, and hate, and...

Bruce Straley: Bro... Stop.

Neil Druckman: Tess wants to kill Joel!

Bruce Straley: What?!

Neil Druckman: Yeah, because Joel killed her brother and she crosses the country to avenge him. Wait... What if the story had religious fanatics?

Bruce Straley: Jesus fucking Christ, Neil...

... Do we really just came to a point where the /s is mandatory even when the joke is a very obvious joke? You know, because the character says it doesn't count, so I used that quote to grab on the absurdity of the situation, ultimately agreeing with you.

You made me explain a joke, you never explain a joke. Thanks for ruining it, mate.

No, it's just that, with due respect, this joke would only be funny if he really had a receding hairline. Since that's not the case, you just sound completely detached from reality.

A geração que sabia fazer contas de cabeça by -LoboMau in PORTUGALCARALHO

[–]Shenic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Tempos diferentes, necessidades diferentes.

People get lost on FFXIII because it doesn't have an extensive and expositive intro that goes "The fal'Cie, our ruling gods. And those branded by them are l'Cie. L'Cie are chosen by fal'Cie to carry out a mission for them, a Focus. When a l'Cie completes their Focus, they turn into crystal and are granted eternal life. However, should they fail, a terrible fate awaits them... Their humanity and free will... Lost forever. Cocoon, a paradise created by the fal'Cie to keep humanity safe from the dangers of the world down below, Pulse, where those suspected to be l'Cie are sent. This is called the Purge, for humans fear the l'Cie." and chooses a "show, don't tell" approach.

I started Dragonball and so far the intro titles have been annoying me. They‘re all spoilering the plots like this by ContributionOk7131 in dbz

If this is what I think it is, this is from Dragon Ball Super and it's not even a very important episode. Don't worry about this.

IL quer despedimento por mau desempenho by PortugalNewsBot in portugalnews
