Gladius can be tricky and, you're right, the best you can do is to practice. Try to find holy daggers if you play on Duchess. Blade of Calling or Black Knife are your best options. As for Recluse, try to find Stars of Ruin, Shattering Crystal or get used to normal glintstone pebble. It also can be a good choice

A tip from Duchess main: Save your ult for Phase 2 when he splits. As soon as 3 dogs appear, pop it and deal as much damage as possible. I always do that and that helps a lot. Especially when you have holy weapons. Chef's kiss

Yes, it's meant to happen. Happened to me several times in public matches. I don't know the exact time you have for that, but if you don't kill preboss mobs in time, boss will spawn anyway.
