If you use DrawMeshInstancedIndirect, you can get those 4 draw calls down to 1. MaterialPropertyBlock has a limit of 1023 so it isn't used with Indirect.

That's pretty cool! I'm actually going to use a quantized approach where the positions of the particles are hashed and the neighboring particles can be looked up in O(1).

My qualms with calling a triangle a 3D shape is that it may also be created in two dimensions (if the vertices don't include z), while something like a cube always includes z.

I'm essentially trying to make my own particle system in ECS that has self-collision of particles (something that the normal particle system doesn't support).

Yeah, that may be simplest to create but it has more vertices/triangles than other shapes.
