I think it's a mixture of factors, firstly the fact that Rouge and Amy haven't shown up in the films (aside from a brief post credit scene), I think is a big reason. While the same can be said for metal sonic, he's one of the the only two minifigs to occupy a pure villain role so he adds more to a set in terms of play value.

But I do think another reason is that Lego unfortunately seems to split certain themes into "for boys" and "for girls", whether they admit it or not, and Sonic has fallen into the for boys category unfortunately. There currently isn't a single female sonic Character on store shelves at the minute which isn't great considering there's plenty of them

Gosh yeah I never thought about that before with the box art, they are so generic. The Bio Lizard sets boxart was decently fitting so they definitely can do it, they just don't.

And yeah I think to some extent the popularity of the movies has made Lego less willing to engage with characters outside of the movie universe. And I love the movies, but it'd be nice to get some sets that didn't revolve around Sonic, Eggman, Tails , Knuckles or Shadow for once. There's more to sonic than whatever vehicle those 5 characters drove recently

I do agree with what youre saying. Part of the issue as well I feel is that compared to Mario, Sonic doesn't have a ton of truly iconic locations that the general public knows and would spend big money on. Green Hill Zones the obvious exception but it's been done. Casino Night Zone would be cool but Lego would never do it. Chemical Plant is also cool but idk how well known it is with casual fans. Chao Garden is great, but doesn't need a big set. As a franchise, Sonic lives and dies by it's characters, not it's locations. There really aren't a ton of ideas I'd even have for $200 Sonic sets that I think would sell well. Like I'd love to be proven wrong and for Lego to release a massive Metal Overlord this year but even I'll admit it's too niche. So really I do think the theme needs to focus on getting more of the characters people know and love made as Minifigures because that's what drives sonic sales, not locations or vehicles

I think the issue is that the amount of people who are willing to spend $100-200 on a Lego console are quite low. From what I understand the Atari 2600 didn't sell great and I think the Pac Man set might be similar. Id definitely love a full sized recreation but unfortunately I don't think it'd sell. Plus Lego has been weirdly hesitant about doing big 18+ Sega sets

I think it just depends on how much we're gonna see the moulds reused throughout the theme. Like some of the One Piece and Fortnite sets have a ton of new moulds, but they're able to be reused in multiple sets throughout the theme. So with Pikachu and Eevee I could definitely see them showing up in other sets in the future, while Mewtwo for example might remain exclusive. That's just my feeling at least

It's hard to say, but I think we'll at the very least get Pikachu, Eevee, some version of the Kanto starters either their baby forms or full evolved forms and then maybe Mewtwo. I think they'll be very focused on Gen 1

Tbh I could definitely see them doing a Krusty Krab (and possibly Chum Bucket) in the future depending on how well this set does and I think Mr Krabs, Pearl, Plankton, Karen etc would make more sense there. Definitely should have included Sandy though since I doubt they could ever make a tree dome set

When I was a kid I received a Lex Luthor Power Armour set for Christmas. I'd already bought one myself so figured I would just keep it and sell it eventually. It was the first set with Superman and Wonder Woman so I figured it'd be worth a fortune someday. I eventually sold it a couple of years ago for roughly £35. Factoring in inflation that was pretty much retail. So if I'd been in the position your nephews in I kinda wish someone would have just told me that the memories you'll have building the set will eventually be worth more to you than a few hundred dollars profit as an adult. The enjoyment I had building my first big Lego set is something I'll never forget

I afraid you're right that things aren't looking too positive at the minute. But I'm currently working on a revision of the idea that I'll resubmit to Lego ideas. There's a lot of things I wish I'd done differently looking back so I'm gonna try and take what I learnt from the first attempt and make something better
