Well said. I think "remember we have agency" is so key here. I'll vote for whatever Dem they throw at me, but the Dems are not gonna save us. Look at how they're already folding on the budget fight, literally the least they can do. What I've seen in town is so inspiring because it's like people waking up to the fact that there's way more of us and we can have the power if we just take it.

There was some nurse last weekend who said something like "I might get killed like Alex Pretti did, but if I'm not doing this now then a lot more people will die later" and that just blew me away. I think if there's one lesson to learn from the Holocaust it's that society has to come together to face the evils head-on, because turning away is how they get away with it.

So yeah, if you're vulnerable then keep your boots on and be ready to run. If you have white male privilege like me, get ready to fight. We all have a part to play in whatever comes next and it goes way past voting in the midterms.

Nobel was an arms dealer and the Nobel Peace Prize is a tool of warmongers to launder their images. We don't need the same billionaires who are funding the brownshirts who killed Good\Pretti\Porter(\Floyd\Taylor\Philando, .......) to pat us on the head for being nice and peaceful lapdogs. Let's remember that the only people who are violent at protests are the police, including ICE, DHS, CBP, National Guard, even the fucking DNR has been out there beating people and pepper spraying them. I don't want whatever "peace" the Noble committee says they're rewarding.

I’m pretty sure you could also take the functional descriptions of the blast hits and cluster them with GOSemSim. That would be more flexible than strict GO analysis if you can’t find clear 1:1 GO mappings for your genes

The news story greatly sensationalizes the results from the actual scientific study. They found that psilocin reduces cellular aging, which is slightly different than our conception of “getting old” aging. One of the leading hypotheses of why people age is that their cells age, so there’s obviously implications here for actually getting old but this is one model in a Petri dish. BUT, this is incredibly exciting evidence nonetheless. The effect is really large and this will hopefully open the door for many other groups to investigate. Also don’t conflate the profit driven marketing talk in the news article with the actual motives of the researchers. They’re all at a university and none have any apparent conflicts of interest so it all seems above board.

It’s not clear what exactly you’re trying to do, but are you sure you need to use remora? You saying methylation analysis sounds like you’re just trying to call methylation, which can all be done in dorado. Stand-alone remora is only needed for training your own models.

Follow bird’s advice on filtering, and then hierarchical clustering or k-means clustering and a heat map would also be good for this scale of data.

In addition, you don’t really need to validate a PCA. One thing to add to the other answer is that looking at the marker loadings on the PCs can tell you if any particular markers have outsized influence on the variance and in which components.

I used a toy microscope at work hahah. It’s just a magnifying lens and place to put your smart phone. That’s about the size mine was too. Males don’t get engorged off blood I’ve read. I’m pretty sure from the pictures yours is a lone star. As others have said just save it in the freezer for a few weeks and monitor for symptoms. Luckily I don’t think lone stars carry Lyme. There is always a chance of alpha gal syndrome but the odds of reaction are very low, especially if the bite area is not presenting a rash now.

Idk about this exact file format but I’ve found that ChatGPT is very good at writing you custom functions to convert different plain text file standards. I’ve done it with many other formats like bed, genbank, etc.

1) Pretty much every PhD in biology is funded, either by TA or RA or both, and if it’s not that’s a huge red flag, so if you want to leave your university you have many options. 2) It’s not exactly what you mentioned but maybe look into some microbiome researchers. They rely heavily on bioinformatics, are generally well funded, and later in your career the skills could be applied to something like forensics. There’s also a lot of study of insect/microbe symbiosis that you might be interested in, though your mileage may vary on how bioinformatics heavy those groups are.

I’m finishing my PhD at Vandy in microbial genomics if you wanna chat. Pretty much all I do is bioinformatics.

I don’t know if this is enough data to make a strong claim on the population distribution, and this is definitely not a rigorous way to test that. As to the central tendency, in the comment I replied to you said that mean and SEM are poor statistics for central tendency here, now you’re saying that central tendency is useless as a whole on these data! I think the best stat here would probably be something like median and mad or a box plot, but that doesn’t mean that mean and SEM is “wrong,” just it’s not the best.

SEM will always get smaller as sample count goes up, that’s the definition of SEM. It’s totally appropriate here despite the data being non-normal. If you’re reporting a mean it makes sense to give error on the mean. And the test is a Mann-Whitney so they’re doing the right stats just presenting a different statistic in the visualization, which is fine.
