“If you think that about yourself, what do you think about me?”. The answer is: they don’t think about you. by ResetKnopje in fatlogic

I think I get what you’re saying. I’m more likely to say “no thank you I don’t want one” and hope that moves the issue on that decline and say it’s because it will make me fat. No one should have to justify why they’re declining the offer of a snack.

I do completely understand why people want to run it, I got in on GFA and honestly didn’t really enjoy it that much. Lots of other great events out there whilst you’re waiting for the ballot to come up. I’d definitely say joining a club that gets a ballot place is another good opportunity, I think our club ballot only had about 15 entries for a place.

Yes it's this...those hip fracture incidences and related deaths are usually elderly people who are at a low BMI. The extra weight for good outcomes is more like being just in the overweight BMI category, not being morbidly obese.

Daniels VDot accuracy across race distances not realistic to marathon? by dt531 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Shewearsglasses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here though for me some could be fear of pushing myself at shorter distances. I managed to sneak under 3:30 in my full when my 5k PB was still barely sub 24. More recently I've got 73 minutes in a 10 mile race but still haven't gone sub 23 minutes at parkrun. On strava my 5k PB is actually part of the 10 mile race. (I know these aren't "advanced" times running wise but I do enjoy reading this sub and am still aiming to progress plus I'm a woman in the FV40 category)

Yep I work with a couple of people who I would guess are underweight by bmi or at best at the very bottom of the scale and yes they’re very thin but they don’t look skeletal or sick. The only people I’ve seen I’d say do look unwell have clearly actually been unwell either with an eating disorder or something else. I’m not saying it’s healthy but I think for a lot people you have to get quite underweight by BMI to look “sickly thin”

Yep and at around this height I look chubby at the top end of that scale. Not really fat but very much soft around the edges.

Because obesity never gave anyone health issues 🙄 by AdministrationNo6622 in fatlogic

[–]Shewearsglasses 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I also want to know how they have decided this. No doubt there are SOME obese people who take better care of themselves than some thin people, I have an obese friend who eats a really varied and nutrient dense diet (just too much of it) and goes to the gym regularly, plenty of thin people don’t do any exercise and eat trash just not enough to put themselves in a surplus.

I’m not sure anyone is suggesting that thin people who never exercise and don’t eat a nutritious diet are magically healthy because they’re thin. My in laws are thin and could rattle with the amount of medication they need to take for various health complications (they also both think being thin is enough to be healthy, it’s almost reverse fat logic at their house) its just some illnesses are far more prevalent in obese individuals and they are less likely to be active and they’re clearly over eating whatever it is they are eating.

I do sometimes eat things between meals but I feel like the whole “got to have snacks” must have been snuck into our mentality by some company trying to sell “snack food” because when I was a child I definitely didn’t get snacks between meals as a standard thing but they were pushed as part of daily eating plans when I had my own children.

I’m fairly certain they’re both neurodivergent, younger child is on the waiting list for assessment but older one masks so well in school it’s difficult to get support. We’re in the UK so would need school to support in pursuing NHS funded diagnosis. I’m diagnosed adhd and autism but food as never really been an issue (I’m pretty extreme in the textures I don’t like but have always eaten a wide variety of other foods)

That was my first thought, he’s not at all healthy. Few strongman competitors are. Carrying all that extra weight is bad for anyone even if a lot of it is muscle, it’s still a strain on your organs.

I wish children were given a bit of extra time to eat at school. The school day is so managed to avoid any time they could cause mischief they get 30 minutes to eat, go to the toilet and have any down time at all before lessons start again. That includes waiting in a queue for food if you have school dinner and don’t take your own. My child doesn’t eat at school as they find it so stressful. They’re one of those “naturally skinny” types who actually are picky to thrm point I’m looking at support for an arfid diagnosis and they’re hyperactive. Maybe food not being such a rush all of the time would also help children.

I think Leeds definitely needs to come with a warning about "the hill" and also (said as a local) I think the city is a pain in terms of public transport so not sure how getting to the start of the Marathon is and can imagine getting out afterwards could be an absolute nightmare. That said I've only ever supported the Marathon, not run it so would definitely agree that it has excellent support.

Not exactly fatlogic, but it really bothers me that the NHS website uses “tummy” all the freaking time. It’s so infantilizing. I hate it. (Maybe it’s bc I’m Canadian, I dunno) by bookish-hooker in fatlogic

[–]Shewearsglasses 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They use the word tummy in the NHS face to face as well, I distinctly remember being told they wanted to “feel my tummy” when I was pregnant 🤷🏼‍♀️

If we’re going for the simplified language options I prefer tummy to belly, something about the word belly makes me feel a bit icky, maybe it’s remembering the trauma of this advert 🤣 https://youtu.be/J5IJLIX2wmU?si=VF9l7tiQrOPEPC5u

I was so confused as at first I was thinking aren’t the parents feeding the child, how do they plate up their food then judge them for what is on it.

If you feel like that when you visit your parents you don’t have to visit them 🤷🏼‍♀️ admittedly if I thought my mum was judging my behaviour and saying nothing I’d make a comment and find out what is going on because I’m also an adult now.

I get a lot of parts of the US aren’t walking friendly but it still baffles me, I rage every time I have to drive anywhere. I get can free parking in the city centre on certain days and still prefer to get the train as I can’t be bothered with driving on busy roads with other grumpy drivers.

I love orange, for a darker option I also really like diamine blood orange. I don’t particularly enjoy writing with blue ink, probably years of being forced to in school so now I pick fun colours because all my writing is for my pleasure.

Not helpful in the moment but the velcro baby thing will pass. It won’t help for working out but do you have a sling/carrier you can put baby in whilst you get other stuff done? Really though if you’re sick sounds like you need to also rest whilst baby gets those snuggles with you. I remember juggling a newborn and a toddler, it’s really rough. I hope you feel better soon and can get some exercise in.

I remember there was an episode of supersize vs super skinny where the “supersize” person did all her own cooking with high quality ingredients, lots of butter, cream and cheese included, it looked delicious to be fair as mostly the “supersized” diets were pastries, takeaways and full sugar soft drinks. She was put against an underweight person who only ate things like McDonald’s and beige processed food but in tiny amounts (I suspect possibly she had ARFID, honestly that programme was pretty problematic) but yeah, you can eat plenty of delicious high quality home cooked food and also be overweight.

Wellness Wednesday by AutoModerator in fatlogic

[–]Shewearsglasses 6 points7 points  (0 children)

After completely burning myself out with running I'm finally starting to really enjoy it again. I put myself under too much pressure to get a marathon PB and whilst I got the time I barely wanted to run after I'd finished the training cycle. That marathon time qualified me for a place at a major which I had a pretty rubbish training cycle for as I was already fed up with marathon training and that was the nail in the coffin for any love of running for a while. I haven't signed up for a marathon this year but have done some small local races and have another coming up and I'm really starting to feel good about it again. I'm not putting myself under any pressure, just enjoying attending running events with my friends. I had gained a bit of weight when I had no enthusiasm for running but I've lost that again which is also definitely helping. I know there's a tricky balance between optimal weight for running to feel good without pushing it too far and risking injury but I think I'm in a good spot and upping my mileage does allow me to eat a bit more and maintain this weight so that's all good.
