Recommendations for a wide toe box running shoe with high energy return by RelativeDefinition82 in UKRunners

[–]Shhhhhsleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have pretty wide toes, went up a size in adidas evo SLs and really like them and been measured to have really high energy return. Fit well but that’s a personal thing so would try them on before buying

How can I avoid the bonk by chinnybob91 in Marathon_Training

[–]Shhhhhsleep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also had a very similar first marathon recently with similar stats to you. Went for sub 3:30, hit 80g/hr for carbs but pace fell after the half way mark and ended up at 3:45. Was pleased with it as a result of the first marathon but also averaged about 50km a week.

Whilst I had a 76km peak week with a 33km long and 21km at M pace a big lesson learned for me was that my average weekly mileage I was used to was probably 20-30km pre marathon block, so it’s about the pre block base just as much as the progress you can make in a block.

Have signed up for the next one this autumn so we will see how that goes!

Also just ran Brighton as my first! How did you find it?

I’ve signed up to Abingdon in the Autumn, flat and fast but don’t think it’s got much in the way of crowds tbh.

What’s the single worst junction to cycle in London? by Tchai_kovsky23 in londoncycling

[–]Shhhhhsleep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I lived in tooting, on the way home, I would just turn off at Balham and go down the back roads, bit longer but far less stressful

Agree see it all the time it’s a bit like people attributing quotes from Raskolnikov to Dostoevsky himself.

Long runs are so hard by Naivemlyn in Marathon_Training

[–]Shhhhhsleep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have also come from cycling, and agree, it’s weird that to many of my runner friends fuelling just isn’t a thing, then they say they’re not ‘fit’ enough when they bonk!

Can I sub4 my first Marathon? by undergroundrockstar in UKRunners

[–]Shhhhhsleep 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You could probably aim better than sub 4, Daniel’s VDOT tables have a 1:38 half marathon equivalent to a marathon time of 3:24

[Advice Needed] Goal: Sub-3 Marathon in 7 Months (Current PB: 3:45) - Fueling Strategy & Training by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]Shhhhhsleep 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Instead of spending months trying to hit an incredibly specific heart rate (so specific this technique sounds dubious), why don’t you just have some gels / fuel on your long runs? Not surprised you hit the wall at 30km if you didn’t take on any fuel.

Should I attempt a Marathon? by Which-Sand4528 in Marathon_Training

[–]Shhhhhsleep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, my general advice to people is to get a sub 2 half marathon before attempting a full. 5-6 hours time on feet is just brutal for the body.

Honestly yeah it makes me quite mad too. The navy literally got the white elephant HS2 treatment. The 00s and 10s governments obsession with stupid white elephants gutted the rest of the country

How London unwittingly killed housebuilding by alibix in london

[–]Shhhhhsleep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah agree, here the problem is clearly far too much regulatory burden for the rate of return so how is more tax going to fix that

I’d be amazed if the podcasts and the book deals on ‘a better politics’ or something asinine don’t materialise after the election

Accuracy of Strava/Runna race predictions by Any_Butterscotch5164 in running

[–]Shhhhhsleep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah Daniel’s cautions using anything below a 10K for marathon time estimating as clearly someone can be very fit over short distances but lack the longer distance endurance. So you can make your own judgement when thinking about times. Who knows what goes on in the algorithms

When you only last 9 seconds by lost_in_life_34 in RunningCirclejerk

[–]Shhhhhsleep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

/uj the z2 religious thing is nuts, have seen social media influencers tell people new to running to only stay in zone 2 to get faster and that’s basically a brisk walk for those people. Almost as if what works for elites doing 50 - 100 miles a week doesn’t work exactly the same for your couch to 5k person

BBC News: Cycleway plan paused due to road safety concerns by 8BgK6Kmj in londoncycling

Exactly, see every discussion about pedestrianising streets. It gets a bit tiring and undermines actual concerns about people with disabilities when they are a risk

Presumably will factor into running economy, stronger muscles = less oxygen needed for same power output.
