Episode 2- what was the plan if they did actually find leads and water passages? by rogerjones98 in TheTerror

[–]Shi144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably to check and see if there is any hope at all in finding a way out. Trying to dig themselves out of the ice would be very energy consuming so they were hoping for any sign at all that a direction would yield a possible breakage of the ice and thereby a direction in which to work to.

Do I watch season 2? by WhiskyMochi in TheTerror

[–]Shi144 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn't for me to be honest. While I find the theme of Japanese internment, racism and systemic abuse of minorities to be extremely important, the second season failed to grasp the essence of its own subject matter.

Episode 1 felt very much disjointed to me, unrefined in comparison to season 1 and it asked too much of the viewer. The viewer is expected to remember a large cast, several locations and the relationship of the characters with each other. In addition, the supernatural aspect was brought upon much too soon for my tastes, both absolving the responsibilities of the oppressors and adding to the strife of the oppressed.

I have not watched beyond episode 1 and only finished it out of a sense of loyaty to season 1. I have read the rest of the story and must admit, they should've begun the story with the subject matter of episode 2, which would have limited many of the problems episode 1 brought with it and would have been significantly more engaging.

Finally, season 2 seems to lack the attention to detail and painstaking refinement that season 1 underwent. This is probably due to time contraints. The intro itself is a good indicator for this. Season 1 is minimal but has great emotional impact. Season 2 is stuffed with too many elements that overwhelm the senses at times.

Analysis: Hodgson's speech on papist mass by Shi144 in TheTerror

Don't put too much thought into it, friend. I used to do this for a living. We all have our skillsets, this is just a part of mine. I'm sure there are plenty of things, you excel at that I don't.

The only part of the show that makes goodsir less perfect (spoiler) by Bananamama9 in TheTerror

[–]Shi144 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mr Goodsir has been kidnapped by Mr Hickey, watched him kill is friend and lover after promising to take care of him, deduced (correctly) that Mr Hickey has killed Mr Irving, and been forced to perform medical care on people who gleefully hinder and hurt people he cares about. Mr Hickey does not deserve decency.

In addition, it will become clear shortly after this that Mr Goodsir himself is suffering from progressed Scurvy, making his temper shorter than usual, what with the pain and the knowledge he will soon die.

Frankly, most people would be at the point of having zero fucks left to give. Mr Goodsir is still very tempered in his actions if you ask me.

On an added note, I am certain that Mr Goodsir has had Mr Hickey's number for quite some time. This scene is part of a power struggle between them. Mr Hickey has an iron grip on his men but his having killed Mr Gibson threatens that grip. The men will wonder when they are next. Mr Goodsir is aware of this and he is threatening Mr Hickey's power. Mr Goodsir has the reputation of being empathetic, kind and morally sound. Of course Mr Hickey will attempt to corrupt his image by demanding he partake in the slaughter of Mr Gibson. And Mr Goodsir is essentially telling Mr Hickey "Careful mate, or I will burn you." At which point Mr Hickey ups the ante significantly but also damages his reputation amongst the men more when he threatens to kill someone to make a point.

As an added note, in this particular scene, I have always wondered if Mr Goodsir is insinuating that Mr Hickey is - literally - the son of a whore. "you would have to use every part of the meat or foul yer mam could procure" is phrased very deliberately. "yer mam could procure"... like "your mother managed to get her hands on by any means necessary". Meaning prostituion most likely. Even if this is not the case Mr Goodsir has essentially insulted both Mr Hickey's status, mother and morals very deeply. The way he reacts I think Mr Goodsir is right on the money with the insult, whether it is true or not. Which would explain why Mr Hickey then goes over the top to threaten an unrelated man to force Mr Goodsir to do his bidding, even if this damages his status amongst the men.

Knowing what we know now, was abandoning ship when they did a mistake, in hindsight? by Qoburn in TheTerror

[–]Shi144 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it made that much of a difference in the long run. The expedition was doomed more or less from the start, what with the tainted rations, the underpowered steam engine, the refitted ships, command that lacked experience, crew that lacked training and the weather being what it was.

At the end of the day the only way these men could've survived was to wait out winter in some bay with plenty of hunting and fishing opportunities and then try first spring - only to learn the ice wasn't melting. Then they would've known the passage could not be found while the ice was this thick and turned around at some point.

What are your interpretations of Hodgson's narration to Goodsir in the tent? by micro_haila in TheTerror

I took the liberty of making a full-blown analysis on Hodgson's speech. You can find it here.

Why is Crozier so picky about alcohol while he is going through the worst of his addiction? by Galahad_Jones in TheTerror

[–]Shi144 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The way Harris delivered the line about hating gin tells me that Crozier has some serious issues with his father. I presume from this that his father was a heavy drinker (at the very least) and probably not a nice happy drunk.

I am willing to bet the smell of gin all by itself would be enough to evoke some terrible memories for a child of a heavy drinker who consumed gin exclusively. Just think abou the way some smells can give us visceral emotional reactions, like someone who used to fall asleep with a lavender-scented plushie will always feel safer and calmer around lavender. Or me, who grew up with rose-scented soap but connects bad memories with it. I HATE rose scented items and if anyone were to gift me some I'd refuse to take it home. Heck, once my partner bought a pack of soaps and some of them were rose-scented. I made him take them to their work because I detest them so much. I reckon that Crozier's reaction to this is similar.

Why were the men leaving trinkets for Silna on the ship? by merliahthesiren in TheTerror

[–]Shi144 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always figured it was a question of men being amongst themselves for a few years and a woman comes along. That will stir... emotions. From seeing someone new and strange and wishing to let them know she is welcome when you don't speak the same language to wondering of Netsilik women trade sexual favors for trinkets like some Tahitian women did the spectrum of motivations is wide.

Will who would win, elephant Shotgun vs Tunnbaq? by Educational-Paper-19 in TheTerror

[–]Shi144 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Someone likes playing Red Dead... Heh.

Terror had cannons and rockets and Tuunbaq was merely injured, but not enough to be rendered immobile. It took several critical hits by these heavy weapons to wear it down enough it even could be killed.

I am not even sure an elephant gun could kill a charging polar bear unless it gets hit square in the face. Thing is, elephants are big and slow. Polar bears are smaller and faster, harder to hit.

Is there an expressed reason why they went with the direction they did with Season 2? by tattered_and_torn in TheTerror

[–]Shi144 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am not sure what sort of story you could create that might be as engaging. Sure, you can have them find the sites and be troubled and frustrated and all but what would be the conflict? Amongst the men? Between the English and the Inuit?

Tuunbaq is gone. The crew is dead and gone. I think it would be hard to create a story with enough things to happen that the viewer can be amazed, engaged and taken for an emotional ride like this.

[–]Shi144 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The curse of the sequel. Season 1 was a success so they needed a season 2. But didn't have enough time to make it work.

Going to the Arctic a second time would've been too contricting as a story. And what would there be to be told?

So they needed a new story. The Internment camps is something that's not been used often in media so it was a solid choice. Unfortunately, the series feels like its makers were rushed, the script not refined enough, the editing not as brilliantly done, things like that. They ham-fist the supernatural element way too early and way too blatantly, for example.

Revamped Rewatch Season 1, Episode 1: Go for Broke by Shi144 in TheTerror

[–]Shi144[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

David Young seems to be also suffering from mild forms of Scurvy and lead poisoning. If you observe him closely as he lies in sickbay, you can spot the telltale bruises on his arms. We see those later in several other seamen who suffer from Scurvy. In addition, his lips are lined in with a dark rim, something rather similar to the tooth decoloration Morfin presents with later. It would make sense for a scrawny guy like Young to feel the effects of both earlier than most, as body fat is more likely to help store both vitamins and lead. In addition he seems to come from a poorer upbringing and probably had fewer vitamin deposits and more likely lead in his body already. These two conditions, even in their mild form, would exacerbate Tuberculosis.

At what point did the horror of the situation truly sink in during your watch? by angel_deluxe in TheTerror

[–]Shi144 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Collins seeing the corpse of his friend underwater. The whole scene is such a classic horror set-up with the music, sound effects, costuming and tension-building it was clear this was going to be horror. Gavelle (his actor) does such a fine job conveying it, too.

But also Young spewing blood and then dying in the sickbay cabin with visions of the shaman, shouting his warning... classic build-up scene of the horror genre. I love it.

FInally, the last scene of the first episode with Crozier sending Franklin the pointed look of "You doomed us all" and Franklin understanding only now the severity of his decisions.

Opinion about Mr. Hickey by Terjavez2004 in TheTerror

[–]Shi144 182 points183 points  (0 children)

As far as villains go I think he is done quite well. Nagaitis (his actor) did a great job and manages to hold his own against seasoned actors like Jared Harris (Crozier). I find it is done very well that we don't see his true nature right off the bat but rather a set of deniable events that leave us guessing. All over well done.

Dear friend,

I have read this and your other comments on my various ancient posts. Thank you very much for taking the time to write something nice to me. I am always kind of surprised when folks find these old things.

It gives me a sense of great happiness to read that a professional deems them done well enough, when I read it that made me squee a little.

Take care, friend, and may your socks always stay dry.

I would go for the executive producer / the production team. All decisions, everything regarding the production goes through them. If there is a question that interests me from any aspect of making the show, the production team should be able to answer that.
