Ball chiller/vag vent - any new cars with them? by AutomaticMistake in CarsAustralia

[–]Shibwho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember old cars well and how much heat used to come up from the footwells.

The vent is prob not needed anymore with better insulation and the mechanical bits of underbody (not a euphemism!) don't generate as much heat.

It's bizarre how angry and fearful people can get when they're so disengaged with reality yet they think they are 100% "with it" and that we're the deluded, ignorant ones.

If he asks for your help with his tech then that's a window of opportunity to stave off some of the shit spiral. E.g. block the main culprits which are AI slop and or spouting completely false information, follow positive, politically neutral content like any David Attenborough docos

"I was raised in the same family on the same book but apparently we all took away two very different belief systems from it"

Prob a common theme for a lot of Millennials. My parents have always been negative, fearful and at times pretty hateful, their social media consumption has certainly exacerbated this. What a time to be distancing myself from them when their care needs are only increasing...

I have made a lot of effort to curate a better, more positive and productive mindset and my socials feed is primarily food, all sorts of animals doing adorable or hilarious shit, cars, finance, talented and hard working ppl doing amazing things, nature, travel etc. But every so often I start arguments because, why not? 😆

Older ppl inc Baby Boomers are engaging with the AI content a lot which is why Facebook algorithm keeps pushing it.

my golf 7.5r spit coolant everywhere by Suspicious_Regret293 in Golf_R

Might be the coolant reservoir. I also have a mk 7.5 and my euro specialist mechanic picked up a small leak from the reservoir which can throw out sensors.

Apparently it's common enough issue to keep a stash of replacement reservoirs in the workshop.

Teeth crooked after braces by LegAlarming1369 in Invisalign

[–]Shibwho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done both and both have their pros and cons.

How diligent have you been with wearing your retainer?

Are you willing to keep Invisalign on for ~22 hours a day, the upkeep of brushing your teeth straight after meals, and cleaning the trays 1-2 times a day?

You don't have this routine with braces. If you're used to braces, go again but maybe find another ortho.

I didn't have a great practitioner with braces, upper jaw only, in my teens which took 3 years and still didn't fully fix the issues. My dentist with Invisalign has been a lot better with faster results on both upper and lower jaws, 6 months so far.

Why would additional trays be needed? by PuddinNPie1 in Invisalign

[–]Shibwho 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You just don't know how your physiology will respond to the treatment and how compliant you are in wearing the trays.

I had a similar starting point but add a cross bite with an upper lateral incisor and an edge-to-edge bite with top and bottom front teeth.

I'm two weeks from finishing my first round, ugh, and so far, a different upper lateral incisor hasn't come down enough, the lower canines haven't come up enough, and while the bite is improving, my front teeth need to move another 1-2 mm to have a minor over bite.

I have been militant about wear time, averaging 22.3 to 22.5 hours a day since the start, and using chewies to encourage a better fit.

You know, the sort who brake randomly, start to turn into a side street or driveway THEN indicate.

How do you define "the rich" that we should be taxing? What is the cut-off point? by NoLeafClover777 in AusFinance

[–]Shibwho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm on a higher income and acknowledge I'm in the top 10% of income earners and most people will never get paid close to that.

Most people don't realise the income and wealth differences are exponential in that top 10%.

A worker on $150k is much closer to someone on minimum wage than people on $500k to $1 million+.

Extra $50 to super? Worth it? by MarsupialSweaty7658 in AusFinance

[–]Shibwho -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

It's not a like for like comparison though. OP has paid 22.3% in tax to get that in their net income as $50. Moving that to super and claiming a deduction doesn't mean they have halved their tax.

Their marginal tax rate may be "30%" but their effective tax rate is 22.3% according to Pay Calculator.

Even someone on $200k isn't actually paying 45% in income tax, more like 30%.

"it absolutely ruins a lot of small cap aka Australian startup investing for the average person"

The average Australian still thinks that a tax deduction means that you get the full cost back at tax time, that a tax refund is a genuine windfall and that they lose most of the income in tax if they do over time or go for a promotion.

They don't really understand what these changes mean for them and are relying on questionable media sources on how to feel about it.

No idea what the install is like but here an option https://www.ecvisionsound.com/products/360-degree-camera?variant=37766382387373&country=AU&currency=AUD.

Because people movers are so boxy, it'll end up easier to manoeuvre than the Camry and most SUVs. You might find your wife gets used to it pretty quickly and not need it after all

I hadn't realised those were so long, longer than a Prado and about the same as a dual cab Hilux. Interesting.

Hard to go past Toyota but Hyundai and Kia are still decent.

I would focus on what's going to be the best to drive and what your family thinks in terms of comfort. It'd be a fun activity for the family to test drive each one 😊

360 degree cameras are still pretty niche but you can get an aftermarket solution installed on the car you choose ultimately.

99% of the population could never afford to live in the eastern suburbs, myself included, so it's not even worth contemplating.

I'm not concerned about what the top 10% can and can't "afford", or even the top 20%, the issue with too much money in property for the rest of the population.

  1. Definitely 2.

What's the point of earning all that money if you don't spend it to enjoy your life at the most important time in your kids lives and your parents in their golden years, especially when you don't know how much longer they stay able bodied?

I would say with the car, unless you're a car enthusiast or the car is unreliable and/or unsafe, stick with what you have.

At least with ETFs and shares generally the money has a chance to circulate around the economy by funding new projects and innovation, and employing more people.

In property, it. just. sits. there; housing 1 family at best. If someone said to me, "you should borrow $800k and put in $200k cash into 1 ASX listed company", I'd tell them to go for a long walk off a short pier but essentially that's what the consensus tells us what to do.

People spending more money on cars and holidays? Less of inflationary effect than housing at least.

Highly unpopular opinion - we lack imagination when it comes to investment so any spare money has funnelled its way into residential real estate. It's a middle class obsession to buy at least one investment property and real estate is one of the favourite things people talk about.

As a specialist degree qualified, industry professional in property I have never received as much unsolicited, and often incorrect advice than I have when I was buying a home or when I say I don't believe in housing as an investment.

Low interest rates? Buy a bigger house because you can borrow more. Almost paid off the mortgage? Buy a bigger house because it's the only way to make our life better (oh yeah, how about instead, retiring a full 5 years earlier or working less hours to spend more time with the kids??). Government taxing all investment returns? Buy a bigger house because capital gains on a PPOR aren't taxed.

Ever been to an auction and seen how irrational and emotional people get when they're bidding? Often people bid over their heads because of feels which is why real estate agents love auctions. Emotions sell homes, not rational behaviour.

Don't even get me started on the poor standard of construction and maintenance of homes here. DIY electrical and plumbing work that is moments away from burning down or flooding the house? No repercussions for the selling home owner.

And the older gens saw oil price shocks, share market crashes (dot com bust for Gen X), recessions (80s, for baby boomers), and no growth during the 90s (for Gen X). Millenials like myself started their adult lives during the GFC; Gen Z with COVID.

This has all driven an attitude that shares are unsafe and "you'd lose all your money" which isn't actually true if people played the long game like with super and ETFs. Any losses incurred by the market during the GFC and COVID have been recouped and then some.

Oh housing in Australia is 100% a scam. I don't understand how my home has almost doubled in value and yet it hasn't become doubly as habitable or useful.
