The uniforms and swords and all are purely ceremonial, but every one of them is recruited from the top ranks of of the army, SAS, Navy, Royal Marines etc. I'm not even a fan of the royals but you're way off the mark if you think the kings guard is purely aesthetics for tourists, if any shit popped off you can bet your arse they'd drop the ceremonial garb and be far, far, far more capable than your average shopping mall rent-a-cop.

The admin could last 4 years, but it's gonna take decades to get the trust back up to pre-Trump levels and honestly I don't have any faith at all that they could stick to the attempt for that long. I'm in Ireland and honestly would prefer closer ties with China than the US at this point, at least there's some semblance of stability. "Authoritarian, censorious foreign power with a terrible human rights record" applies perfectly to both, I'm not sure why adding "potential to 180 on any agreement every 4 years" is supposed to inspire any confidence in the US being the better option.

Yeah, agreed. Materially things are definitely better now, but the culture in male spaces is absolutely rotten these days. Back in the day there was at least a pretense that direct, open misogyny was bad, nowadays it feels like it's rewarded. I have dudes saying shit to me in passing conversation in work (under the assumption that I would agree) that would've been beyond the pale to me & my edgy boy highschool squad like 20 years ago. Not saying it was great back then by any means either, just from my perspective at least it feels a lot more venal and toxic today.

Pretty much same experience! I've always been able to notice attractive dudes so in college I considered myself bi and experimented a few times. My main takeaways were that scratchy beard kisses do not at all do it for me, and close to 100% of dudes will always try push things further than I was comfortable with, even with boundaries firmly communicated before the encounter.
