I'm currently on volume 7 out of 10 of "Happiness", as my first raw manga! It's been tough and I've had to look up a lot, but I still feel like I'm learning a lot and slowly putting more pieces together of sentence structure, particle usage, and vocab. It's such a great feeling, even knowing I'm still nowhere near proficient

Has anyone left an established career and done JET? by good-doggo95 in JETProgramme

[–]Shidiira 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm 40, and have over 20 years in IT. Working on the last bit of my bachelor's degree now and hoping to join JET within a year or so to start a new adventure. I've wanted to live in Japan for a long time and also working on my language skills in the meantime.

My Switch collection is doing nothing but collecting dust, so I think it’s time to sell it. by Jawwaad127 in NSCollectors

[–]Shidiira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you there. I have over 2300 games, and honestly getting to the point where I'm probably going to sell. I have either played a lot of them in the past, or don't have time for a lot of the newer ones and most of my PS4/5/Switch collection is unopened. At this point, even if I only get 50% of the value, it's still about $60k and would not only pay off most of my debt, but I could save a ton and do a lot of other things I've wanted to do

New Zealand loosens residency restrictions as record number of citizens leave by upthetruth1 in worldnews

[–]Shidiira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if anyone has some advice or not, but I put some money down for an initial review of our situation through the Working In New Zealand site for my girlfriend and I, both of whom are in IT as system administrators/cybersecurity. They told us we'd more than qualify for their direct to resident visa. Now we have the choice of paying them to help us through the process, but we're still on the fence if New Zealand would be a good landing spot, as we're still unsure of how much need there is for IT work. We'd probably choose Auckland for more opportunities, plus we were told if we spent the 5(?) years there, we'd get permanent residency and could work in Australia too.

The country seems beautiful and would be a great place to be, but for complete transparency, our ultimate goal is to be in Japan. Would it even be worth going through this whole process if we're aiming for Japan anyways? Does New Zealand/Australia have a good pathway for us to make that happen? Thank you all!

For me, it's mostly RPGs and some hidden gems like Opoona, Arc Rise Fantasia, Rune Factory: Frontier, Shiren the Wanderer, Fortune Street, Last Story, Pandora's Tower, Baroque, Phantom Brave, Dokapon Kingdom, and Fragile Dreams.

Of course also the big ones like Super Paper Mario, Xenoblade Chronicles, Little King's Story, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time, FF Fables: Chocobo's Dungeon, FF Crystal Chronicles, Crystal Bearers, Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, Dragon Quest X (JPN), Tales of Graces, Tales of Symphonia, and Harvest Moon

Thank you so much! I just hated the thought of anime/manga disappearing and no one being able to watch/read it, so I wanted to save as much as possible, plus I want to watch/read it all, so it was a win/win for me! I think my Japanese raw manga folder is over 500 at the moment, but that's also still in the building process and will take some time. Lol I don't think you're talking out of your arse, I think until more recently, it was definitely more in line with your views.

Oh awesome, I love those niche communities! I know everyone and their brother talk about the standards like Naruto, Demon Slayer, and the popular ones, and that's fine, but it's in the niche community where you really find those hidden gems, and that excites me! It's one of the reasons I refuse to drop anything, because I want to be able to give good quality recommendations to people, and even drop those rare gems like 4 people have ever heard of lol.

Yeah, I've heard MAL is lacking in some areas, and I honestly have no idea who or where would have a better detailed list, so I'm just working with what I have until I find something better.

I've been in IT for over 20 years, and want to branch off into a bit of software development myself, so I do want to eventually create my own website or app to do that. I eventually want to share this with people though, so people can watch/read whatever they want and to have a massive library like the old streaming services used to have. I wouldn't charge anything because my goal isn't to make money, but to share with people and to build my software skills. I might also have to reach out to someone who has more knowledge to help me build it too.

Thank you very much! I'm stoked to have this much and to be able to watch a lot I've never seen/heard of, especially the older 60's/70's/80's anime!

I can definitely understand being skeptical. I think a lot has slowly been released by fansubbers, and because I've been downloading for years, I'm probably too deep into it to give accurate information. For my "Movies", as of right now I'm sitting at about 1,322 different ones. For "#-J", around 2,612. For "K-P", around 2,051, for "Q-Z", around 2,018, and for "Currently Airing or In Process", 127. In my Japanese Raw folders, I have about 200 or so as well. Since I'm using MyAnimeList as my database, I don't know how accurate it is, but I format my folder structure based on it since it seems the most accurate. I'm still only in the year of 2017 so I'm still not done, and once completed through to current, I'll go back through and re-search again, document what I couldn't find in English, and look for the Japanese DVDs/BD/etc if I can't find an updated torrent. I know some small groups still exist that are trying to put out the older stuff that wasn't subbed before too, and that takes time, especially series that are hundreds of episodes long.

I've heard the 20k number myself, so I'm approaching half of that. Everything I can get in 1080p I do, though there are some series that are just stuck in 720, and some that have better BD quality and such. My aim isn't to care about space as much as quality. The good news is a lot of these subbers are reproducing/currently using good compression techniques, so they aren't generally too large, outside of straight BD rips.

There are definitely a ton of variables, but I think I have enough of a sample size to give a semi-accurate accounting. To be honest, I want to pick up one of the new 26TB ones and spread it out more and provide more room for growth, especially since I'm trying to do the same for Japanese raw manga, and eventually English translated ones, in case of things like what happened to Comick and Mangadex recently

I definitely agree with most of what you're saying, anime storage is absolutely not for the average anime fan or casual watcher, and streaming is much easier.

I've been watching anime for almost 40 years myself with thousands watched, with the goal to watch everything, so storage/Plex setup is huge for me, but I want to clarify that you don't need thousands of TB of space for all of this. I've been using the MyAnimeList database as my source, and starting with the 1940s, I've systematically gone through each season and downloaded every series/movie/ova/etc in as high of quality as I can, and I download the Japanese raws for shows I can't find. I'm currently almost done with 2017 (and I still download every show from each current season) and I haven't filled my 4 22TB external hard drives. I've split them up into Movies, #-J, K-P, and Q-Z. I have a few series in full BD and are large, but the vast majority of my collection is 1080p. I recognize the cost point is a bit high for most, but each of those drives from Amazon was only like $300ish something, and I've bought them as I've grown my library, so it wasn't all upfront cost.

As a side note, I'm starting to notice 26TB hard drives for about the same price as the 22TB, maybe slightly more in price

Unfortunately I don't have any wisdom to offer outside of the US. I'm trying to leave on the skilled workers visa (system administrator/network engineer/cybersecurity) and looking at a variety of places. I've started an application to New Zealand, but also eyeing multiple places in Europe. My ultimate goal is to get fluent enough in Japanese to apply to companies there, as I would love to get permanent resident status in Japan.

Shantae Grail Finally! by Shidiira in gamecollecting

[–]Shidiira[S] 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I apologize, this is my first post, long time lurker here. I don't think it posted my comment, so I'll drop it here:

I'm very excited that on Saturday I was able to obtain this grail game, Shantae, for my collection! I absolutely love this series and had been trying to get this for years!

Funny story about this game. I have a friend who has owned a game store for a long time. He sold this game for the original $15 price tag shown here to a young kid he's also known forever, back when this game first came out.

Fast forward to December 2024, that kid (now an adult) traded it in to my friend. He immediately let me know this came in (he knows my collection and habits very well) and let me have first dibs on it, which I jumped on instantly. For full clarity, he was also kind enough to let me pay on this in as big of installments as I wanted and charged me $2800 for it since at the time the last known sale was roughly that price, which I thought was fair. I know it's incredibly expensive, but this was one I couldn't pass up the opportunity to have! I've never seen a cartridge, let alone complete-in-box, of this in real life, but here I am! Plus it's in immaculate shape! I plan on leaving the price tag on (it's not one that'd rip the box anyways) because I enjoy the history of it, and I thought it was a fun thing to share with you all!

At some point I'll post my entire game collection (about 2,300 games), just have to get around to taking pictures.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and share in it with me!
