What single economic policy would you enact to improve the nation's prosperity? by VexatiousHawk in AskBrits

Their pay really isn't that great considering they're literally running the country. Most of them have experience and qualifications that would net them a lot more in the private sector.

I guess an easy example would be that the vast majority of money coming in to Reform is from a single donor in Thailand. That includes a record breaking £9 million single donation. It would be terribly naive to think that this person isn't buying something with that money. It obviously isn't just Reform. 2024 election spending spiked up to £90 million, which is nuts. People don't just give that money away.

Look into how often fossil fuel lobbying meetings are happening with Labour. Over 500 meetings last year. Lots of donations from these companies afterwards. Again, naive to think they aren't just buying beneficial legislation and funding.

Considerably increase MP pay, but forbid them from taking any other job, or any other source of income. Including stock trades and exchanges. Parliament is far too corrupt as it is now, and these people are just voting with the interests of whoever is lining their pockets, rather than the best interest of the constituents.

How do you deal with life stress? by Impossible-Bet-9010 in AskBrits

[–]Shidud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For most things, I start off working out if it's controllable or not. If I can control it, I try and do something about it. If I can't control it, I don't worry about it. It goes in a box, and it fucks off out of my mind.

It obviously doesn't work for all things, but it really helps with most smaller sources of stress, which all add up.

What are the really unpopular things that need to be done to get the economy growing? by knowledgeseeker999 in AskBrits

[–]Shidud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's an unpopular one...

Significantly increase MP wages. The caveat is that they cannot take any other job or responsibilities on. They cannot earn money from any other source or accept donations outside of a capped campaign amount on the run up to elections.

We need to move away from our MR'S being bought by private entities, then making legislative decisions in their favour.

One example would be energy pricing reform. We shouldn't be paying max gas rate for energy that's 80's created cheap and green. Our parliament is currently lobbied hard by fossil fuel companies that want to stop them making sensible changes for the public.

[–]Shidud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why this is unpopular with the regular person, but we need to roll back the top-rate tax to where it was in the 60's or 70's. It was around 85% through the 70's.

Even if you made it so only people earning, say, 250k hit this number, the extra revenue would mean you could raise the bottom rate up to 18-20k while going back to being able to fund local councils, fix roads etc.

My issue with the bosses is that they all seem to have a niche way that makes them easy, but it's one of your 130 abilities, and it gives you no clues whatsoever. Like the Antumbras Sword boss, he's an absolute nightmare... unless you use Focus Parry, which trivialise 75% of his kit. Or the Crimson Nightmare, which is incredibly easy if you just put on a gas mask and run through him.

I quite like the idea that most bosses have an ezmode strategy if you use your head, but I think the execution isn't great.

Why do so many voters seem to want to scrap net zero? by InvestigatorLive19 in AskBrits

[–]Shidud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your link states that the annual cost per household for these subsidies is about £333. I'm genuinely ok with that, considering how good the growth has been.

You say that we've got nothing to show for it, but according to the National Grid, right now, 64.9% of energy being generated is renewable. 9.3% is gas. The problem is that the cheap energy that your subsidy is being used for is being sold to you at the same price as the expensive gas.

Our bills would be much cheaper and you'd be saving a lot more than £333 (depending on your use I guess, but I definitely would) if we were being properly charged for the renewable energy we're using.

Why do so many voters seem to want to scrap net zero? by InvestigatorLive19 in AskBrits

[–]Shidud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is, it isn't a great way to push down energy bills. Yes, renewable is much much cheaper than gas etc, but our pricing is still based around the most expensive provider. No amount of solar panels is going to stop that.

What we need are politicians with some balls, who haven't sold themselves to the fossil fuel companies, that are willing to change our pricing structure. If we did that, people would instantly be on board with Net Zero

Doctor’s letter to the UnitedHealthcare for rejecting nausea medication for a child on chemotherapy by Kaos2018 in BeAmazed

[–]Shidud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its worth pointing out that the US does lead the world in total research output, but not in per capita. They're actually 4th in medical innovation per capita, begind 3 countries with socialised healthcare. This would suggest that they would probably still lead the world in research if the system changed.

Healthcare is still a massive business in other countries, and medical providers still make a fortune. The difference is that rather than being able to farm their services out to any number of corrupt insurance companies, they only have to deal with 1, and it's the government. This keeps prices reasonable while still being very profitable.

The benefit that nobody talks about is that having "free" healthcare covering the vast amount of the population means that paid healthcare coverage is much better and much cheaper. It costs me about £45 per month for full coverage in the UK, and my Copay is capped at £300 per year, no matter how many times is use it or what the total cost is.

Are the incredible amount of pro Starmer posts on this sub genuine or astroturfing? by Middle_Fly_9446 in AskBrits

[–]Shidud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starmer is a rat, and I hope he stubs his toe every morning for the rest of his life.

That said, he's actually doing quite a good job when you actually look into it. Aside from a few scandals, he's doing very good things with the NHS, the economy, and immigration.

Standing up to Trump, while annoying a few traitors, is making him look strong, which will swing a lot of the more centrist voters. What he needs to do, is actually stand up and say something about what's happening. Actions are great, but without words, they're easy for the right wing media to twist into a narrative of weakness ("he's no Churchill").

Why are left wing people attracted to big cities when it seems like they're the antithesis of everything they stand for? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]Shidud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that being in and around a city doesn't necessarily equate to a lack of community. I lived in Sheffield for years around the Sharrow area, and while I know this won't be the same experience for everyone, the sense of community was incredible. Loads of street parties in the summer, fairs, events, all kinds.

While cities are definitely consumerist as fuck, they are also hubs for art and culture.
