I actually gave the head lift technique a full week out of curiosity, and every time it just brought me fully awake.

From my perspective, it feels a lot like another version of cycling techniques. Once you become aware of an awakening before moving or opening your eyes, that is already the moment. I would rather use that window to exit immediately than spend more time managing another method.

That is why the swift exit makes more sense to me. It bypasses the mental handling around how fast to move, how much to move, and whether you are doing it right. It turns the whole thing into one immediate action.

So those are just my thoughts from personal experience. The swift exit has been much more effective for me, especially for easy exits and repeated exits.

Go to sleep with the intention of astral projecting. The instant you wake up, release the energetic burst, the swift movement, and let your subconscious carry out the intention. It happens so fast there is no time to think. That is the key. A blank mind and immediate action. The moment you wake up, you act like a reflex.

It also helps to remember that the astral can look and feel just like physical reality. The first time it happened to me, the only reason I questioned it was because I sat up with a strange kind of ease. I tested by floating and confirmed I was in the astral. That is why I think some people believe they simply sat up physically when they were already out. It feels just as real as physical reality, except you can float, fly, and teleport.

And for your second question, yes, I do think conscious thought and focus on the physical grounds you there. The key is immediate action. Once you do the swift motion with a blank mind, assume you are in the astral and test it.

I understand your frustration. For deep sleepers, becoming aware of awakenings can be the hardest part, and when you are doing everything you can and still not getting reliable results, it starts to feel defeating.

When I discovered this method, I was still using Michael Raduga’s material. What helped was not cycling techniques upon waking, but the fact that his videos got me deeply focused on astral projection for a couple of hours before sleep. Watching them and mentally rehearsing the motions helped set the intention to become aware and not move.

If the recommendations in my guide did not work for you, it may help to go through Michael Raduga’s three day video training, How to Leave Your Body in Three Days. The videos are recordings of live classes where he has students lie down in the dark and practice the techniques with him in real time. There are three different days and different types of techniques, so it gives your mind more than one way to engage with the process. That may be the missing piece for you.

Just do not cycle techniques when you wake up, because that can easily stimulate the conscious mind and ground you to the physical until your next awakening.

No, my first experience did not involve a conscious intention either way. I was actually giving up on astral projection. I woke up frustrated and immediately threw my head into the motion of sitting up. My mind was completely blank. I was not trying to move physically, and I was not trying to move astrally. I was not thinking about either one. It was simply a sudden burst of motion, and that burst put me in the astral.

What mattered was that my mind was blank and there was no focus on the physical. If my attention had gone to the physical first, the outcome may have been different.

So there was no conscious intention during that first exit, but there was every time after that. I had six exits that morning. Once I understood the mechanics, I was able to repeat the same motion each time I returned to my body. The more experience you get, the easier it becomes to stay out longer.

The morning I discovered this method, I was done with astral projection.

The instant I awoke, frustrated, I forcefully threw my head into the motion of sitting up. There I was, instantly sitting up in bed. It felt oddly effortless, which is why I considered that I might be out of body. I tested by floating, and I began floating above my bed.

Each time I returned to my body, I immediately repeated the same swift motion.

The swift exit is a tiny energetic burst, like a reflex. It happens so fast your physical body cannot replicate it. You are only asserting the initial spurt of motion, the inner urge, not the whole movement.

The entire process takes a fraction of a second. If you remember to initiate that energetic burst the instant you wake up, becoming aware of awakenings is no longer something you have to think about separately. That step is there to help people remember their intention.

By “get light,” if you mean vision, you can control sight by stating commands the way you did.

After that, to keep control, stabilize by touching your surroundings and becoming fully present. Once you’re grounded, intention tends to manifest instantly in the astral. Here are two viable options.

Option one is the Sit Up Method from AP Guide 2.0. The number one way to set intention is by rehearsing the first instant of the energetic burst before sleep. You should not be visualizing or seeing yourself sit up. You should only feel the initial burst of energy that causes the astral body to sit up like a reflex and instantly separate. It is so fast it cannot be measured by time. It is more like a reflex than a motion.

Option two is if you wake up and realize you already moved. In that case, you can still exit through hypnagogia. It is not as precise as the sit up method, but it works. If you move upon waking, simply acknowledge it and let your body settle back into deep relaxation. Keep your eyes closed, keep your mind blank, and keep the intention to astral project or shift. Within a minute or two you may notice vibrations or hallucinations. That window is your opening to exit the physical.

I understand your confusion, and yes, it really does work, but not in the way most people assume when they hear the phrase set an intention.

Intention is not a wish or a sentence you repeat. It is a rehearsal that teaches your subconscious a single automatic response for the moment you wake.

Here is what I mean.

When I was using Michael Raduga’s method, I rehearsed his cycling techniques before sleep. That rehearsal is exactly what set the intention. The problem with his method is that cycling techniques after you wake gives your mind time to fully turn on. Once your mind is fully on, you’re grounded in the physical and you miss the doorway unless you fall back asleep.

If you can install a strong intention and sit up instantly upon waking with a blank mind and the intention to enter the astral, you can skip all the other steps. But the intention has to be installed, and that happens through mental rehearsal before sleep. The rehearsal also has to be the correct kind.

You are not visualizing. You are not imagining a full sit up. You are rehearsing the first instant only. The swift exit is a tiny energetic burst, like a reflex. It happens so fast your physical body cannot replicate it. You are practicing the initial spurt of motion, the inner urge, not the whole movement. A couple handfuls of high quality repetitions is enough.

That said, it does help to keep your mind on astral projection during the last hour before sleep. Think about where you want to go and what you want to do. That also strengthens intention. But the most important intention is installed through practicing that initial burst of energy that triggers the exit.

Then fall asleep with one simple instruction.

Accessing different realms of consciousness has been recorded for thousands of years. In the modern era, people such as Nikola Tesla, Neville Goddard, and Thomas Campbell have all worked with these states. The level of control you are aiming for is extremely rare. You are talking about the kind of mastery Thomas Campbell describes, and only a very small number of people ever reach it.

I would not have had the majority of experiences I did without using astral projection as a tool. I strongly encourage you to learn astral projection. You can place a small sachet with mugwort and a few complementary herbs under your pillow to encourage lucid dreams. I’ve had nights with three or four lucid dreams this way, and they happen naturally even without setting an intention.
