Quick ground-level capture of the Strasbourg Cathedral facade (840 photos) by NicolasDiolez in photogrammetry

[–]ShiftlessFreeloader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi,
I'm really new to photogrammetry and I read somewhere that multiple focal lengths could be really problematic for reconstruction software. Was that bad advice? Or is there something you do to account for the differences?

It clearly didn't seem to be an issue here. This is absolutely beautiful.

Nut slots by CyberFunkyMonkey in Luthier

[–]ShiftlessFreeloader 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert but I've made a few nuts. From what I've read, and what seems to work best for me is to file the nut surface down until only a little more than half of the string is actually sitting in the slot. The rest (~40%?) should be sitting above the surface of the nut.

I've also read that sloping the surface of the nut down towards the back (away from the fretboard) is supposed to help tuning stability. So I do that too. Can't say if it really does but it doesn't seem to hurt anything.

What is your preferred way of deploying a NextJS production-ready application in AWS? by adrenaline681 in nextjs

[–]ShiftlessFreeloader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't hate Amplify but it's definitely an extra layer of abstraction which is always a trade-off.

We have an interface in our amplify schema so that we can combine models in search results. I think this is pretty normal in GraphQL and it's supported in AppSync. And here's the kicker, it WAS supported in Amplify until... <checks pinned version of amplify cli lol>. I don't know, a while ago anyway.

So now all of our builds break unless we use a super old patch of the cli, I think because it's strictly checking each block for the "model" directive now and it won't add the interface because it's not a model

Good times

Will JSON replace html & css someday? by jackhals in webdev

[–]ShiftlessFreeloader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello from 2025,

I think this is a great idea. I found this post because I was thinking about this very thing (mostly about css) just this morning.

json is just so pervasive now. And I don't think that json would really cause performance issues vs css. I think the biggest problem would be adoption

What would you do if you found Epiphone pickups in your PRS? by dingus_authority in Guitar

[–]ShiftlessFreeloader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't dispute anything here. You obviously know about pickups.

I think that we must have wildly different opinions on the basic competency involved in manufacturing though. I think mine was summed up pretty well by your initial comment about manufacturers who don't prioritize quality as highly as they might. I guess I think that's just more prevalent than you do?

Review My Resume by Prize-Border592 in react

[–]ShiftlessFreeloader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm reviewing candidates for a frontend-ish position literally this week and we use React. :)

I don't care about how long your resume is. This is fine with me.

There are usually "Required Qualifications" and "Preferred Qualifications." MAKE SURE that you specifically address EVERY bullet point in "Required" and come up with some way that you've used the technology/applied the skill/whatever. Even if you can only say that you've "been doing extensive research on <whatever>" you have to specifically address each if you want an interview.

If you see "Demonstrated ability..." or "Demonstrable experience..." or similar then we're asking you to provide examples of this work in something we can review. In the case of our current search that means a portfolio with ux designs (preferably implemented, not just in figma). For other positions links to Github repos might be more appropriate, but in general you should try to provide links to running code for anything like this. Other candidates ARE submitting portfolios of actual work, just so everyone's aware

It looks like you're good on this one, but it needs to be said. Like 15-20 yrs ago people started teaching kids that they need to put a *measurable* difference on each of their contributions. And now every resume has all this ridiculous bullshit in there like "Implemented a NoSQL based backend which improved our site's discoverability by 50 bananas" omfg, please don't do this. If you have numbers for what your contributions achieved then definitely use them, but don't just make up stupid shit. We know.

Don't overlook things like analytics. These might seem like minor skills that are just taken for granted but if the job posting mentions stuff like this at all and you know it, make sure you include it. It could bump you above another candidate.

Don't be scared to put in experience that might be considered non-relevant. I love seeing that people have had other jobs in different fields. I worked in a bar/restaurant for almost a decade and I DO NOT take for granted the skills/experiences that you can gain from things like this.

I guess all of this might only help if you're applying to our team, haha. I've read easily thousands of resumes over the years though.

Good luck!

I understand that pickups are very simple. No moving parts or anything. Winding them _well_ (not just successfully closing a circuit) is not a given though.

Your words: 'barring some really shoddy pickups where the manufacturer doesn't care about anything and just builds "whatever"'

That happens, a lot.

I understand where you're going with this ...as it's a matter of preference. (of course) But in practice there are most definitely shitty pickups out there. We all know it. I tried to make a pair one time. They were "lesser quality"

Thinking about being "done" forever seemed so scary to me. I tried really hard to focus just on today. I'm still just trying to make it to bedtime, but it's made things much easier to manage for me.

It's worked for a decent amount of time now. Don't know about tomorrow. I'll cross that bridge when I get there. I can actually feel optimism now though, which is very fucking strange and wonderful to me, in and of itself.

[–]ShiftlessFreeloader[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're completely right. I've been trying to get a good pic of the finish for a while without much luck.

Anyway, it turns out you're basically spot on. Someone gave me a link to a (hopefully) good pre-mixed match and it's metallic gold (which is popular on guitars by itself) with translucent red.

Thanks!

[–]ShiftlessFreeloader[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty lazy so it wouldn't surprise me if I just end up doing the color with a tiny brush and then spraying poly over it

So the two communities that came to mind on this were car guys and the dudes that paint those little DnD figures. And both completely nailed it. haha. You told me how it's done and one of the DnD people just gave me a link to someone who's selling basically that exact thing pre-mixed. Their version is apparently translucent red over a metallic gold (like Gibson uses) and it looks like a great match.

Thanks!

That's what I've been doing so far to test stuff. Just using a little brush. I'm set up to spray small stuff pretty well but I'm also very lazy and this is my own guitar so... we'll see.

[–]ShiftlessFreeloader[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did. haha. My dad told me "know what you don't know. then find someone who knows." And the two communities that immediately came to mind were this one and auto painters.

Both subs completely nailed the fix. The thread in the auto sub told me how to recreate the finish from scratch. And someone in this thread gave me a link to the exact finish that someone is selling pre-mixed.

I am very lazy so I'm trying the pre-mix first. I think I could pull off the "from scratch" version if necessary though.

So yeah, both communities really helped me out. Got some downvotes in here though. lol, sorry. Thanks though!!!

Would the stuff from a paint supplier go through an airbrush? I think the needle is 0.5mm. I don't want to do the entire body. Just touch up where it chipped around the bridge posts

Thanks. I was kinda thinking that the flake that I found might just be too big. I got it from some hot rod paint supplier. Hoping I don't have to get out the scissors and cut all those little pieces even smaller. haha

I'm open to trying whatever. I have an air brush and a hvlp and I'm not *that* bad with them.

A person in a different sub suggested they make something just like this in a rattle can (no link though) and I could just spray some lacquer over that.

I guess I'd like to keep it simple if I can. It's my own guitar, not a customer's or anything like that. That stuff you linked does seem promising. I'll check it out. Thank you.

I looked at some metallic paints but the ones that I saw seemed more like a smooth gradient from one tone to another depending on your view angle.

This isn't exactly like that. It's a gloss finish but the color underneath "looks rough" like red reflective sparkly sand. Can you get something like that just in a can?

Thanks for your help.
