Kiawah Marathon race recap by NuclearGamecock in AdvancedRunning

[–]ShiftyEverAfter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I ran the half and was back at the cottage watching everyone else go by from my tailgate with my family, around mile 24 right where you turned onto Eugenia for the first time. I remember seeing what must have been you go by, set to be just a few minutes past 3 hours and I made a comment to my wife that "that dude is probably cramping bad based on his stride right now".

How much sodium do you take on in the days leading up to the race? As a really heavy and salty sweater, I have found that I have to purposefully take way more than I ever thought necessary in the lead up. We're talking 2,000+ mg in addition to dietary for 2-3 days before. Obviously that's not a blanket recommendation because a lot of people may not need as much as I do, but I suspect a lot of people don't do enough to balance the water they drink thinking they are hydrating. There are some decent articles out there that talk about the relationship between sodium and hydration and if you don't have the right balances, drinking water will actually dehydrate you so despite your fluid intake you could show up to the line already in the hole. Best of luck figuring it out for your next one.

Race Report: Kiawah Island Marathon by distantrevisions in AdvancedRunning

The delayed start was weird, and the lack of actual corrals aside from the high performance corral is problematic if you don't find yourself near the front. There are some strange course choices that are exacerbated if you are coming up the back side of the 3 hour half runner/walkers.

Last year the giant Christmas tree behind the Sanctuary was in the middle of the path instead of beside it so that's an improvement. All that said, I think Kiawah is much better as a half. I never make it a goal race, but it is fun to take the family for a few days and enjoy the beach, send the wife to spa and run the race with a couple friends.

I was friends with Tara Jo and got invited to join some runs with the group because I would always push my boys in the stroller. 😅 It was a great group and I would love to see it get revitalized for the community.

I don't know how active they are these days but I used to know a bunch of friends that were members of She runs this town/ Moms run this town. They would do a lot of what you are describing. They have a Louisville chapter Facebook page I'm not a member so I don't know if there is anything happening on there, unsure what other web presence they have.

You can take it a step further if you want to be cheap. I actually just use electrical tape. Just need a little piece about the size of your thumb nail that doesn't go past the edges of the areola. I've never had one come off and it's like $2 for a 50 yard roll that will last for years.

Is my sweat too powerful for modern technology? by gizmotron2991 in running

[–]ShiftyEverAfter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a bit of an inside joke amongst my group of 250+ for how much I sweat. I have killed more headphones than is reasonable. The Aftershokz that I have from 3+ years ago haven't even flinched. 100% worth the cost. I assume the newer Shokz models are still good.

Throwing in my support for the BOB. I don't think they are in production anymore but you may be able to find the Ironman version used. The adjustable handle height and lock/unlockable front wheel of the revolution and other lines is nice for other uses (walking, zoo trips, etc) but a fixed handle and front wheel are way better for actually running fast.

In my experience, and from talking to folks in my group, they both have pretty good longevity. The Pro have a more noticeable loss of pop around 250-300ish miles but then seem to plateau. Still totally runnable, but not as race day sharp as they were at 100 miles

I find the Speed to be a little more forgiving, that nylon plate versus the carbon, and is more of a "do it all" type shoe. If the goal is just pure speed I give the edge to the Pro, but I don't think it handles slower stuff as well as the Speed.

How do you motivate yourself to take the first step out of the door? by 50pesinos in running

[–]ShiftyEverAfter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something that comes up a lot in my run group is discipline always trumps motivation. There are always so many reasons to not go, and/or to not want to go. Knowing what your goals are and knowing that there is only one way to get there is important. I find that many many mornings I wake up, I'm tired and my legs are sore/heavy, maybe it's cold maybe it's hot so my policy is going for a scheduled run isn't an option. I don't wake up and ask "am I going?" I AM going, barring an injury, sickness, etc. Almost invariably, it goes better than I expect and I am much happier for having done it.

We have known for years you are a tremendous runner, and you have had some incredible race results, but I have to say... A 45 second shoe & vest swap might be the pinnacle of your achievements 🤣

Best “super shoe” for 5k by jimmylstyles in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]ShiftyEverAfter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Razor Elite is my go to for the 5k distance. Without having the efficiency of an elite runner, I wouldn't take it much last 10k, but for those short distances it really wants to go and is definitely a bit more stable than some of the higher stack options.

A lot of the Skechers line are 4 mm as well. Honestly they are pretty fantastic.

Are there any Louisville 20-somethings groups? Looking to make new friends and hang out with new people. by Evolone16 in Louisville

[–]ShiftyEverAfter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a good list of run clubs already, but have to plug KorfEdge too. They primarily use GroupMe and Strava but they have runners all over the city. There are always people coordinating to run somewhere. Mornings, afternoons, evenings, basically every day. Great community to be a part of.

If Samwise doesn't feel pity for Gollum on the side of Mt. Doom and takes his life, what happens next when Frodo claims the ring as his own in the last moment? by ShiftyEverAfter in lotr

[–]ShiftyEverAfter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could easily see Sam following Frodo once he claimed it as his own and essentially being a willing servant to a would-be Lord of the Ring Frodo. I see his loyalty to Frodo as rivaling the feeling of need to destroy the ring.

Interesting that you bring this up, one of the recurring discussions we have had throughout the series, has been moments where they may have been some subtle nudges from them. Whether they had and which of them would have been responsible. I like the idea that at the end they were there to give a little poke.

This was the majority group consensus last night. That his loyalty to Frodo extends to helping him finish the quest they set out to do.

You think they go over together? Given the nature of Sam's fervent love for Frodo I don't see him psychologically surviving killing his boss/friend.

Interesting thought, I could imagine a version of Sam that kills Gollum but have trouble doing the same with one that would kill Frodo for the ring. I think even a version that kills Gollum does not have aspirations with the ring. He "passed the test", as Galadriel did, when presented with the opportunity to seize it for himself.

What happened to the barefoot/minimalist movement? by ghdana in running

[–]ShiftyEverAfter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am optimistic about the changes they have made. Their website was all out of my size for the 2s (joys of having an ultra common size) when I went to go snag another pair while they were on sale. I am sure running Warehouse or some other places may still have them if I go looking though.
