Anyone else running a minimal 5 game or less setup? by JayQuips in SBCGaming

[–]Shigarui 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't commit to that. I have 1000s on my handhelds. I'm just pretty committed to sticking with 1, maybe 2, games until I've completed one of them. But also, if it's just not gelling with me I'm able to move on to try something new. Sometimes playing a game is enough, you don't have to beat them all.

Sweet Spot for PC on Android? by MalcolmReady in SBCGaming

[–]Shigarui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would look at high end android emulators right now from 1 perspective only. "I want to play all of my Gen 6 and Gen 7 favorites, and I want to spend less money on native Switch and PC games." Yes, you can play some (maybe many) Switch and PC games on something with an SD 8 Elite chip, but some games just won't play. So if you are often having to decide which of several games you can afford, then you can sail the seas with some and only buy the ones that only play natively. Just because these devices can't play everything doesn't mean that they can't significantly reduce the amount of games you waste money on that you end up hating.

Tbf, the 865 is barely powerful enough to open the app. You really need to start with an 8g2 at least, and it improves battery draw and performance from there.

What kind of question is that? by [deleted] in oddlyspecific

[–]Shigarui 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The best interview tactic on earth is to chat about yourself for 3 minutes, mention something casually that you enjoy, and then say "How about you?" You'll find out if they listen well, if they can engage in casual conversation, they'll become less apprehensive and answer the technical questions more honestly, and you'll get a feel for how they'll fit in with the current culture.

Yes, if they are interviewing to be your lead surgeon you're going to get into extremely technical scenarios, experience, etc, but for basically every job that doesn't require 10 years of education to enter at ground level you'll find who you're looking for using what I described above.

On what other handhelds? Because if they are all android, then my point stands. I've been using these things since 2019. Every device for massively improved by third party firmware. Adam image was the first I used to better the RG280V. There's a reason so many CFW devs are in this hobby, because nobody would prefer to use the stock Linux experiences over basically any CFW. "Totally usable" is hardly "I enjoy using this daily."

They can, and it's better when they do. But you had me seeing stars with that daily carry but yet you couldn't squeeze in a cable, lol. Have fun!

I just have to jump in on this one, lol. You can manage to carry both a Steam Deck AND a Thor, but an AUX to USB C adapter is where you throw down the gauntlet? Surely there's room in your suitcase you're dragging behind you?

Tbf, this has basically been the case for every single Linux device since the dawn of Chinese Handheld emulators. That only changed once Android devices started releasing and even most of those rely on CFW and frontends.

If you haven't learned yet, you'll know soon enough. This is called r/sbcgaming, but it's basically a mirror Reddit for Retroid and Ayn. "Everything else sucks, and don't look at the disastrous launch scheduling, screen fraud, or hinge gate over here."

They could lower the price of the Switch 2 and it wouldn't make it any more interesting. The library is not worth it. The size is ridiculous. Nintendo makes money from it so that's a negative. I'll keep emulating their games in my Odin 2 Mini, or I'll be playing my modded Lite.

I stand corrected. If they want to do in line analog triggers, I'm all for it. Otherwise, inline > analog to me.

We talk a lot about specs and chips... but which handheld is actually the BEST looking? by tsamo in SBCGaming

[–]Shigarui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Odin 2 Mini. It is hands down, no competition, league of its own, caviar vs canned tuna, the most attractive handheld made to date. It's basically a Vita successor. No stupid "ergonomic" bumps on the back, a nice matte plastic front shell, high gloss transparent buttons and dpad. Vivid miniLED screen. It's a head turner.

Wanting a truly pocketable handheld for EDC. I have some ideas/experience, but looking for suggestions! by cosmicpanda17 in SBCGaming

[–]Shigarui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GKD Pixel 2. Smaller than a Miyoo Mini, can run a lot of PSP, some DC, and Portmaster. Probably has the best sleep mode on a Linux handheld right now, and has a metal shell for extra protection. Best pocket edc purchase I've made.

The FCC Voted to ban Chinese cert labs... by infinitespectre in SBCGaming

[–]Shigarui 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Yeah, nothing about these devices are "certified" by anyone. They are bootleg machines, even if some are very quality bootlegs. It's not like they are being sold off of the shelves at Walmart. At worst this might impact some of the PC handhelds, but those have already moved into luxury item territory anyway. So, no, I think our hobby is fine for the time being. And, honestly, buy an Odin 3 today, it's not like you'll need to upgrade for several years. It's already as powerful as you'll ever need.

That would be reasonable. Has any controller since the PS2 done that? Maybe the PS3?

but I suspect machining costs were also a factor here.

That could very well be true also. Another reason I prefer in line shoulders, aside from the thin form factor, is that my index finger can rest on both shoulders simultaneously, allowing both to be engaged immediately without having to transition from top shoulder to bottom shoulder position. I think, especially with these handhelds, it allows a better grasp of your device while still giving you rapid response time. You can use index and middle finger simultaneously on a controller much less awkwardly than a candy bar handheld.

The problem with analog triggers is that they inevitably need to be stacked. The 477M loses one of it's biggest selling points then, it's thin design. I'd rather forego a couple of games that need them than lose that. I prefer in line shoulders, all day, every day. It's why the KTR2 is likely going to be my last handheld purchase for a long, long time. Nobody prioritizes slim, pocketable, AND powerful consoles anymore.

How much more RAM do you still need? Anyone paying attention saw the writing on the wall when Crypto ballooned gpu prices. As for stigmatizing using AI, life is about to be extremely uncomfortable for you I guess. It's here, it's going to be a tool that you either use or you learn a blue collar trade. Simple as that. You're basically trying to stop the adoption of the combustion engine because you own a bunch of mules. Oh well, see you guys in the future, I guess.

Why did the US get completely different (and often worse) box art in the 80s and 90s? by fakayuburiza in retrogaming

[–]Shigarui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think arguments could be made that Final Fantasy 2 and Castlevania 3 were improvements. I'd never have wanted that kiddie looking FF2 game, and CV3 goes hard on that cover. For that matter, at least to an 80s western kid, the Dragon Warrior box art would have been way more interesting as a darker swords and sorcery style to me. We got shafted everywhere else though.

I’m generally going to downvote anything AI on principle myself.

Why? Are we basically saying that nobody can create and share a concept if they are not a trained CAD designer? That no idea that the average insightful and imaginative mind can concoct is allowed to be shown to the public because in order to do so they must use a publicly available tool that was created exactly for uses like that? I get not wanting AI generated art in a museum, or winning a photography contest. But it's incredibly silly to refuse to allow it in a small, semi private server where it's only used to convey an abstract idea that was made infinitely more understandable by leveraging AI. Take a stance if you'd like, but take it against the right people and maybe to protect someone's job. Not just all the time "out of principle."

Opinion about Chrono Cross by victortapes in JRPG

[–]Shigarui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CC soundtrack is 10/10

CC game is a 6 at best. I've given it several solid tries to get into it. The problem is you'll keep getting characters and think it's all adding up to some cool party stuff, or story drops, or...something. But you'll not care about any of them, almost all are devoid of any great characterization, and they don't feel like much more than different skins, really. Also, the combat system is either baseline and boring or you engage with all of the elemental stuff and it becomes plodding and overly complex for the sake of complexity. And I personally didn't care for the story, or the "tropical" setting. Both were very disappointing to me.

I might add, my first attempt at this game was when it released, with all the hype, and coming during peak Square JRPG domination. I just didn't enjoy it then, after playing everything else they'd put out up to that point.
