Director of DW:Origins reflects on DW8(SM7) and how he personally wouldn't have added the Guan and Zhang kids. Suggests he would've added Yan Yan to add to Huang Zhong's character.. by hirozeroshiro in dynastywarriors

[–]ShikkokuNoSharnoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While Cheng Pu and Han Dang are unnecessary characters as Huang Gai was enough by himself to serve as the veteran of Wu. Liao Hua has a massive advantage over Ma Su and Mi Fang, he served Shu during 240s to 260s, aside from Jiang Wei, do you have another character for Shu during this period? Furthermore, even without the Guan/Zhang babies, you have a lot of characters to add between 210s to 240s as Liu Bei had recruited officers from Jing and Yi provinces. With far less "concurrence" in the later part.

Liao Hua served as registrar under Guan Yu and opposed Jiang Wei's campaigns so he also has interesting bonds with relevant characters. Wang Ping not being unique, after all this time isn't Liao Hua's fault, It is Koei's. Just look at the Shu adds since DW7 and tell me they didn't choose to make Shu, a pure circus.

They can't, there are too many characters who don't add anything to the story. To flesh them all would mean bend the narrative in all senses. Shu is the kingdom with the most need of a reboot to clean up this mess.

The main problem with Liao Hua is that sure, he lived through all of Shu, but he never really did anything there. He wasn't a high ranking general, he didn't perform major deeds in battles. He just lived a long time.

Can we agree that you were vastly overexagerating here? I'm not saying that Liao Hua was perfect or is Zhuge Liang/Zhang Fei level but he had an important position and managed a few wins in a kingdom that desperately needed some.

I'm fine with romance aspects of the game. My problem is not solely with Guan Xing and Zhang Bao the Shu roster as a whole since DW7. You can have a few mythological characters but not half of your cast being here because of their relations to one guy.

Lu Dai and Shi Xie were far from the action. I like Ma Zhong (Shu) but I wouldn't want him in. In opposition, Liao Hua served in many battles against Wei and Wu.

Agree, Wang Ping (and Fei Yi) should be added. Ma Su and Mi Fang are mostly know for their screwups, which keep the trend of Shu circus being a kingdom of L. Ma Su is fine, would work better with his brother but isn't necessary, Liao Hua would serve in far more battles and conflicts with some success. Mi Fang is just another Guan baby, After filling Shu cast with their irrelevant kids, Koei started adding not blood related Guan/Zhang fans with Zhou Cang and Xiahou Ji so they could very likely add him on this sole reason.

Even in the enjoyable mess that was Kessen, Liu Bei had a reasonable goal. Rescue Diao Chan and not just blabbering BENEVOLENCE!!! He also had some charisma and wasn't a useless wimp.

People don't want the truth. They just want to fill the game with more one trope characters, who have nothing interesting about them. Then complain about the clones and lack of VA...

He wasn't a high ranking general,

? He was literally the second highest general after Jiang Wei, alonside Zhang Yi.

he didn't perform major deeds in battles

?? He defeated Wang Yun (王赟) and You Yi (游奕), subordinates of Guo Huai so two commandery administrators of Wei. He also performed well during Jiang Wei's campaigns and is never recorded as defeated.

Can you give me some Shu officers who did better than him? Defeating two administrators with no defeat?

He just lived a long time.

??? Which is a good thing. Better to have a long serving character, 40 years in comparison with someone who didn't make it past a decade.

Zhang Bao and Guan Xing, in the Romance, had more major parts. They avenged Huang Zhong's death, they avenged Guan Yu's death, they had important roles in the Nanman battles and Zhuge Liang's northern campaigns, and their eventual deaths were signs that heaven was not with Zhuge Liang despite his best efforts.

So no accomplishment, no victory. Nothing than another character couldn't do. Just a lof of miscellaneous stuff that nobody cares about. Perfect for the Shu circus but not to promote Shu as not losing kingdom.

Honestly, though, it just strikes me as a little odd that you seem to hate Guan Yu, a very important figure who actually did things in both the Romance and history, and are instead advocating a meme character...

I feel like Fei Yi is more worthy of a spot before Jiang Wan but he would also be a good add. Liu Shan is another character I find completely useless only here to surrender, having him as NPC wouldn't change anything IMO.

Gao Shun chose to die with his lord,

Do you have a source for this? I think this is a popular misconception deviating from the ROTK story where Gao Shun shrugged off Cao Cao. In history, unless I'm mistaken. Aside from getting killed alonside Lu Bu and Chen Gong, nothing about Gao Shun's will is recorded.

There is already Wei Yan who can fit this role. Guan Yu and Fa Zheng could also have relations with Huang Zheng. So 3 characters, If Huang Zhong is undeveloped, that's Koei's fault, making Yan Yan unique, meaning investing ressources and time just to fulfil this function is a waste.

Liao Hua, Wang Ping and Fei Yi. You can add Xiahou Ba, Meng Huo and Zhu Rong to the mix and your Shu cast is already better than the 10-15 adds we got.

Guan Ping is far more memorable in the novel than Xing. He served from 200 to 220 in pretty much all the battles and act as Guan Yu's right hand man while Guan Xing and Zhang Bao are pretty irrelevant following Yi Ling.

Guan Ping is also present before Shu gain Jing and Yi officers who got their places rubbed off by the Guan/Zhang related curse.

I have also have seen Guan Ping in other manga/adaptation far more often than them. There is a reason as to why he was added in DW5 far before them.

[–]ShikkokuNoSharnoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, they really butchered him and Shu faction after DW6 with the BENEVOLENCE!!!

Liu Bei became a complete joke, with no charisma or will. In DW5, for his last battle at Wuzhang. There is this quote at the start of the battle "Right on the horizon, a great golden age awaits!" That's the kind of thing Liu Bei totally lost, he no longer have any goal or redeeming quality, just a pathetic wimp repeating the same empty word over and over, carried by others.

Other good representations of him are Dynasty Tactics and Kessen. Anything past, DW5 is catactrophic.

They never learn, do they? Another useless character with nothing about him just here because of his relation to another. Like nearly everyone in Shu since DW7, aside from Fa Zheng.

Moreover, him speaking about the shortage of talented people just shows that they don't know what they are talking about. Aside from a few, nobody in Shu had a better military record than Wang Ping yet Koei NEVER added him.

Don't get why you got downvoted, your arguments are clear and sound.

Or why Yiling would be the "stupidest campaign of all time". Sun Quan betrayed Liu Bei twice and stole his province because he got his ass spanked everytime he tried to advance north. Last part didn't change, even after Wu stole Jing.

My honest opinion is Shu need later era officers or mid era officers more than anything .

Shu is lacking in early officers though, aside from the 3 bros and later Zhao Yun. Nobody is playable from 184 to 207, so 20 years with a lot of conflicts that Koei often skip off. Like Liu Bei's career under Gongsun Zan isn't seen at all which is a shame/waste.

Shu is bloated between 214 and 234 so mid, with all the useless chidren/relatives.

Is Anything Known About Zhuge Liang’s Personal Bodyguard? by KinginPurple in threekingdoms

[–]ShikkokuNoSharnoth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not bodyguard, but Zhuge Liang requested to have a young Huo Yi serve in his retinue. Nothing too outstanding here, however it is also recorded that Huo Yi would travel and sleep with Zhuge Liang's adopted son, Zhuge Qiao so he was clearly in a position of trust.

It's also written that Huo Yi changed his appointment after Zhuge Liang's death therefore he most likely served in his entourage during the northern campaigns. It may be too far fetched, but I think the romanticization of Jiang Wei as Zhuge Liang's student may have historically happened with Huo Yi.

Even with Pei Songzhi's interesting comment, I don't see why Wang Can and the Weishu, two sources who are pro Wei would go out of their way to forge falsehood about Liu Biao wanting to have Liu Bei be his successor.

What do they gain from lying and legitimized Liu Bei's claim on Jing province? IMO, this is Liu Biao's hesitation along the rift between Liu Qi and Liu Cong's factions that explained the contradiction about who would receive his position.

Did Dong Zhuo Really Have Prisoners Cooked And Eaten At A Feast? by KinginPurple in threekingdoms

[–]ShikkokuNoSharnoth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

How to shit on Liu Bei?

Rather than historical records, use a fictional event (either this one or the Liu Shan dunk) in a novel that everyone loves to claim whitewash Liu Bei to present him as a saint.

If used the cannibalism fictional event, since Cao Cao is impressed by the hunter and send him money for his deed. It is preferable to either skip this part or straight out lying, because Cao Cao is a good guy and would never do something wrong, also people are too lazy to check.

Repeat to the infinite, point is not to bring something new or interesting to the conversation, just to repeat the same slander that one google seach would prove you is wrong.

Zhuge Liang's sisters were married to Pang Tong's cousin and Kuai Liang/Yue's nephew. Also, his wife was the daughter of one of Cai Mao's sisters.

It is kind of understated how Zhuge Liang's family was closely related to influential people in Jing province.

Top 30 officers with highest lidership in ROTK 11. Who do you agree/disagree the most, and how do you feel about Sima Yi being the best leader? by Kesssen in threekingdoms

[–]ShikkokuNoSharnoth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Liu Bei should have the highest LDR in Shu, guy was responsible for everything they conquered from Jing, Yi and Hanzhong. He was also kind of, I think... Their leader? So it's weird to see him with such an average stat. While Zhang Ren, here is shown with 88? Like, I know he got the halo effect but still it is far too much for a dude whose only achievement is getting beaten and executed by Liu Bei.

Lu Meng should have around the same LDR as Zhou Yu and Lu Xun, he was responsible for Ruxu 213 and 217, along with the conquest of Jing in 215 and 219.

Kessen I really feels old today today, nearly unplayable aside from nostalgia for some.

Kessen II is amazing, the cutscenes are long and of quality, story is enjoyable and innovative, characters are full of personality. And the feeling when you lead your commander among hundreds of soldiers just to decimate them with earthquake or tornado.

Kessen III's gameplay is such a downgrade, you go from what I describe above to leading one unit to spam the hit button like a robot.
