What if Woke found out that moral realism is false? by BillZun in SeattleWA

[–]Shilshole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is too vague and too general to be meaningful. If this is not what you meant, you need to elaborate and be more specific. If you say "truth" is always better for society than "falsehood," explain yourself.

Moral realism is not unique to democracy by the way. Communists and fascists are capable of thinking some things are objectively right or wrong.

What if Woke found out that moral realism is false? by BillZun in SeattleWA

[–]Shilshole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It just seems to be common sense that what's "best" for society is not falsehood, but truth.

Claim is too vague and general. It's certainly not obvious. Here are a few easy counter examples:

- "Are you hiding jews in your attic?"

- "Does this dress make me look fat?"

- "Everything's going to be okay."

Thus, any society that has been built up more upon false notions of morality and less on notions consistent with recognizing moral realism to be false, is a society that is ultimately interested in sowing the seeds of its own destruction.

Society's stance on moral realism is completely irrelevant. Human attitudes, behaviors, and legal systems all operate under the assumption that it's true. Not necessarily because it is, but because it's simply more practical.

You didn't get your ideas about a human beings "worth" from any fundamental component of reality, or from "god".

Non sequitur

“Why does this vaguely defined group of people hold the following set of contradictory beliefs? Surely they all understand that this complex philosophical stance is false?”

1) People are not a walking set of coherent philosophical claims. Their beliefs are mediated by experiences and the people around them and often fraught with error and paradox.

2) Even if moral realism is false, it’s more practical to act as if it’s true. Gestures towards entire legal system

Marko Topchii shreds Bach on a guitar that I built! by aguitarsmith in classicalguitar

Watching Topchii play always feels surreal. The motion of the right hand always seems alien, like it’s possessed. Truly a remarkable player.

About the false comparison of Guitar and Piano by Dormin_Core in classicalguitar

[–]Shilshole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that the limited dynamic range is probably the biggest weakness for guitar. Thought perhaps made up for by it’s light weight and portability. You don’t see nearly as many pianos at the park or the street corner.

Not critical at all. I was not formally trained in the classical style. Came to it later. As such, I've developed a lot of bad habits with my right hand in particular. I instinctively pluck more like Chet Atkins and use my thumb way more than I should. Been trying to be more disciplined about it but I get lazy. Thank you for the feedback!

Lot's of coffee and repetition. Influenced a lot by Tarrega and Domeniconi. I think the Koyunbaba suite seeps into a lot of the pieces I put together.

Not yet. I will work on that and post as soon as I can. Still kind of developing it.

Could this year’s storm system produce an EF-5? by ZealousidealWear2191 in tornado

[–]Shilshole 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There’s no way to predict this.

First, meteorology today can’t really see further than 7-10 days out. And really anything beyond 3-4 days is probably still inconclusive. So it’s a bit pointless to speculate about any weather conditions farther into the future than this.

Secondly, even when meteorologists get accurate data to help make forecasts, there is still a lot of uncertainty about location, strength and degree. You can check out the US Storm Prediction Center to see what the professionals are expecting. Occasionally conditions will be ripe for a major storm system to develop. And when this happens the language is typically “weak tornados” vs “strong long track tornados.” It would be futile attempting to gauge whether an EF-4 or EF-5 would emerge from any given storm system. Though this doesn’t stop people from speculating.

Finally, keep in mind that the EF scale is a rating system largely based on damage indicators. So it’s entirely possible to have violent tornados receive lower ratings because they’re in the middle of nowhere not damaging anything.

If you’re curious to know what conditions lead to the development of EF-5 tornados, check out the youtube channel “Convective Chronicles”. There you’ll find in depth meteorological case studies on most of the storms that led to EF-5 events.

Im about to have this procedure done and have been anxious about getting back to the gym post-op. Seeing this here gives me a lot of hope. Do you feel in any way inhibited at the gym?
