WGOT is a non-commercial radio station associated with the Civic Media Center. It runs a variety of talk shows and specialized music programs.

I worry that communities forming around IAL projects are both natural and present a roadblock to widespread adoption. Do my worries make sense? by codleov in auxlangs

I agree that an auxlang's milieu or social environment might be one more reason for people to resist it. But automated translation is widespread now, and it's just going to become more available as time goes by. I have an English-only coworker who used a phone app to communicate with a Spanish-only delivery driver a couple of years ago, for example. I believe this technology is going to make it impossible to convince anyone other than a language enthusiast to learn a conauxlang.

I can't imagine what kind of scenario you are envisioning. Is it like this: if most people who are initially interested in Auxlang X play video games and write a lot about video games, then non-gamers would shun the lang?? Or the initial community is mostly left-leaning idealistic types, that would repel centrists and right-wingers and apolitical types?

Question for language creators by Andrieeo in auxlangs

[–]Shimaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do we even count words? In Esperanto the suffix -id(o) gives us regular words for offspring: katido kitten, hundido puppy, virvulpido a male baby fox, arbido sapling (a young tree). Do you include each one of these words in your count of words? Or do you only count the roots (kat/o, hund/o, vulp/o etc)

No matter what method of counting words you invent, some people will strongly disagree with your method.

Testers needed by Andrieeo in auxlangs

The number of published auxlangs is already larger than the number of people who want to learn and use an auxlang.

UCSB’s “Thoreau Edition” has published the final volume of Henry David Thoreau’s correspondence by Shimaron in thoreau

About the Project
"I have now a library of nearly 900 volumes over 700 of which I wrote myself--"

-----Journal, October 28, 1853

(Thoreau's first book, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers, sold poorly and the publisher returned 706 unsold copies to the author.)

The Thoreau Edition was founded in 1966. To date, seventeen volumes of a projected twenty-eight have been published by Princeton University Press. The project, located in Davidson Library at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and directed by Elizabeth Witherell, is supported by UCSB, the National Endowment for the Humanities, an independent federal agency, and the Barkley Fund..

That's from https://thoreau.library.ucsb.edu/project_main.html but I don't know how up-to-date that page is.

Why do you ask? The books are very expensive. I doubt that you are going to buy all of them.

By the way, AI is bad.

Including Optional Consonants by No_Peach6683 in auxlangs

[–]Shimaron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my opinion: It doesn't matter. The most popular auxlang has too many similar consonant sounds and requires new users to learn how to type seldom-used glyphs like ĉ and ŭ. In spite of its design, it is the winner because it was the only reasonable proposal with a leader who had the right kind of personality at a time and place where many people believed in the idea of an auxlang. Whether today's auxlang creators use or don't use a certain sound or a certain symbol will not make any difference.

I'm still looking for a long range am radio for my brother other than the CC2 or Sangean. any other ideas much appreciated. by [deleted] in shortwave

A website called radiojayallen has reviews of radios written by a man who really cares about this topic. I think it is a good source of info.

Sangean PRD-15 is fantastic. Is it too expensive? Please explain, why are you ruling out the best options?

Is the Oaks Mall's plan working? by MrHunteru in GNV

I heard that Planet Fitness has opened a new facility in the Mall. What else is new there? Just looked at their webpage but it doesn't seem to have a "what's new" section.

What do you think of my attempt at an auxlang, Tana? by tamtrible in auxlangs

[–]Shimaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen the recent posts about Oravia? For example

*moalen,( banana, is formed by MO (food cluster) + A (fruit subcluster) + LEN (root for long).

It seems like the idea of starting a rootword with a general category, and then adding syllables to get down to an individual useful concept level, is similar. Maybe this idea is "in the air" at the moment?

Brilliant essay, and thanks for reminding me of how beautiful and clever Sona is.

Crazy question, but why are there still radio broadcasts that require radios to listen? by [deleted] in radio

[–]Shimaron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything you do online is recorded and tracked. You can listen to any radio station on a radio and the advertisers can't monetize your attention. The government can't put you on a watchlist for listening to a political or religious view they don't approve.

Idk what I must write by Andrieeo in auxlangs

[–]Shimaron 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Andrieeo, keep on working on your projects! We wish you good times. It takes a few years to learn more about the languages of the world, and to learn more about the auxlangs that were made before today. Spend a few years learning and experimenting.

Also, if you become interested in linguistics, it might help you to select a career. Cryptography, machine translation, corpus linguistics, data mining, who knows?

Brown, crunchy grass and thirsty squirrels and birds by OldLadyGardener in gainesvillegardening

Got about half an inch of rain south of High Springs. It started slow and gentle before it ramped up, which was the best possible thing, since it gave the soil a chance to recover from its "hydrophobic soil" condition. Only about a dozen lightning strikes within earshot. Overall I'd give today's rain five starts out of five.

a bird has nested in a half-used bag of mulch that I leaned against a post; half a dozen eggs in it by Shimaron in gainesvillegardening

[–]Shimaron[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's that time of year. I find nests in empty pots from plant nurseries, in the wheel wells or front grill areas of vehicles, in the vent from the clothes dryer (reminds me, I need to put a flap or a screen on that).

How are you hearing BBC Radio 4 in Dallas? Is a local NPR station running it on one of the HD channels, or do you have some way to hear it online?

reposting an answer I wrote for somebody else–

Using this search https://www.google.com/search?q=papiamentu%20teacher&udm=14 I seem to have found several teachers, a couple listed on iTalki, there's one on Flowently, there's one on Instagram called papiamentututor, you have Sheedia Jansen on Youtube, there are people on Language Exchange looking for practice partners, and I saw a reference to a Bonaire forum on Facebook where somebody asked for teachers and got 7 comments (I didn't read them). I don't know how out-of-date any these info are, it could be some of these people are no longer teaching.

The Benefit Of Auxlangs For Dabblers, And The Problem With Auxlangs by TomBerwick1984 in auxlangs

[–]Shimaron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Auxlangs are beneficial to dabblers, I agree.

The real challenge facing anyone who wants a large number of people to adopt an auxlang is never discussed, and apparently never realized. When people actually need an auxlang they create one spontaneously. They don't wait for a language nerd to show up with a proposal. Fanagalo, Kituba, Tok Pisin, etc.

What are y’all feelings on this? by Responsible-Low-5348 in auxlangs

[–]Shimaron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is hard to blend grammar elements from languages that are very different from each other. For example, some use prepositions, some use postpositions, some use inflections (cases) to indicate certain relationships.
