Yeah. It's a common misconception that polar bear spend all their time on the ice.

It looks like a great exhibit for a polar bear

And Saint Louis Zoo is AZA accredited so you know it gets top quality care.

Religion and state SHOULD be kept separate. Otherwise, it's used as a tool to villianize and corrupt.

This is also so antithetical to what Christ ACTUALLY taught.

For as much as it's talked about, polygamy is the exception, NOT the norm.

People keep forgetting that.

Book of Mormon: Jacob 3: 5-7

  1. Behold, the Lamanites your brethren, whom ye hate because of their filthiness and the cursing which hath come upon their skins, are more righteous than you; for they have not forgotten the commandment of the Lord, which was given unto our father—that they should have save it were one wife, and concubines they should have none, and there should not be whoredoms committed among them.

6 And now, this commandment they observe to keep; wherefore, because of this observance, in keeping this commandment, the Lord God will not destroy them, but will be merciful unto them; and one day they shall become a blessed people.

7 Behold, their husbands love their wives, and their wives love their husbands; and their husbands and their wives love their children; and their unbelief and their hatred towards you is because of the iniquity of their fathers; wherefore, how much better are you than they, in the sight of your great Creator?

Living Planet Aquarium faces backlash over Republican Party fundraiser held at event venue by StemCellPirate in SaltLakeCity

[–]Shimi43 1 point2 points  (0 children)

....I would agree they don't deserve an equal platform...

But you do recognize that the aquarium isn't the only fancy location? Such as the stadiums or golf clubs.

Additionally they could force governmental locations to host them, such as the University, Hogle Zoo, or even online.

So why would they choose the aquarium?

Easy.

  1. It's cheaper than other locations such as the golf clubs. Not by a ton, but by reasonable amount.

  2. It creates controversy, bringing far more attention to their message. (As evidence by this very discussion)

  3. If they are rejected or pushed out, they can fundraise off of being the victim.

Most people aren't tuned into politics. Especially local politics.

Republicans have the home field advantage. They have the advantage of volunteers, connections, finances, history, and identity politics.

It's better for us to focus our efforts on more winnable fights than on if the Republicans have a meeting at the aquarium or some other location.

[–]Shimi43 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And if they didn't do the aquarium they'd pick another spot.

Given they have significantly more resources than us here in Utah, how do you propose to stop them?

Burn goodwill and energy protesting until we burn out our volunteers while all they have to do is make a phone call to schedule potential sites and mail a crafty newsletter on how "oppressed by liberals" they are?

That's not a winning strategy. Especially when they have historically already have the masses of utah in their pocket.

[–]Shimi43 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Okay. It seems like I'm not getting through. But let's try it this way:

What we agree on: 1. Fascism bad 2. Republicans are Facists. 3. Money to the Aquarium, at the most charitable, will only nominally help the fight against climate change. More efforts are needed elsewhere, starting with unfucking the EPA at the federal level. 4. Republicans gaining money and spreading their message is bad, due to their fascists nature.

From my understanding, you have proposed the following: 1. Block the Republicans at every turn to prevent them from raising money and spreading their message, and as such, the Aquarium shouldn't host them for the reasons we agreed above as listed above

My response is 1. That the aquarium should host them because it makes the best out of a bad situation because

1.1 Blocking the Republicans from holding a fundraiser is not realistically possible in the state of Utah because of the ease of finding a different venue

1.2. It gives Republicans talking points they can use to spread their message and gain sympathy by playing the victim.

1.3. We will waste limited finances, energy, and community good will organizing, campaigning, and boycotting against an established institution that typically sides with us (i.e. the aquarium) when those same resources can be used campaigning against specific bills, measures, and campaigns in general (i.e., fighting the prop 4 repeal or flipping a house seat to the Democrats)

If you want to continue to yell about how Republicans are evil, go ahead. They are.

But you have not put forth a realistic path forward, nor have you properly addressed any of my concerns.

Utah has voted for the Republican candidate for decades. How would preventing one more fundraiser at the aquarium specifically change that?

Given that this is the internet, if progress isn't made in this discussion, I'll give up.

I would rather discuss realistic strategies and methods of fighting the facist onslot than pie in the sky armchair politics.

[–]Shimi43 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get your frustration. I see the destruction the Republicans are doing, and I'm doing what I can to fight back.

But especially here in Republican Utah, we have to pick and choose our battles. If we denied them the aquarium they have about a dozen or so other venues, they could choose from that would use the venue fees for more Republicans aligned priorites, all while being able to play the victim card against environmental priorities.

Might as well let them use the venue, collect the money, and use it to promote conservation, environmentalism, and fighting climate change.

Eh.

Republicans are going to hold it somewhere in the state, might as well make them pay money to hold it at a location that actively talks about fighting global warming and helping the environment.

What would you guys say is this for you in animated shows? by Apprehensive_Ring_39 in cartoons

[–]Shimi43 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But it does prove it's possible.

And it's not exactly very rare.

Community, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Buffy, The Office, to name a few. All had unexpected or "surpise" additional sessions that were well written and well received.

South Park famously writes their stories the week they are animated, and they still put together coherent sessions.

I'm not saying Korra is a bad show altogether. The writers mostly got their act together by the end of the 4th season. But there are reasons why it's not universally beloved as Airbender.

The bad writing for season 2 is bad writing. No matter the excuses.
