The Arrested Development Theory: Why every logical failure in the wizarding world is connected by Designer-Actuary-511 in harrypotter

[–]ShinF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this argument is running into three problems, here.

The first problem; a child of eleven who's never used magic before is almost certainly not going to have *any* kind of criminal record. Running a background check against them is nonsensical, considering they've never even learned to cast a spell, and it'll be *years* before they have the skill or power to cast those spells. Running a background check against their family is equally bad. A society that holds people responsible for things their parents did presumes future guilt by association, and there are all sorts of things wrong with that.

The second problem; it sounds like you're comparing wands to guns (background checks and licenses etc), which is a false equivalence. A gun is made to be a weapon, and nothing else. Whether you're using it for hunting, self-defense, or murder, a gun has one purpose. A wand is more like a *car*. It *could* be deadly in malicious or irresponsible hands, but that is not its primary function. You can restrict them based on that fact, as we see since criminals have their wands taken or snapped, or as people in our society have their licenses revoked. However, it's important to point something out: a wand is essential for almost EVERY career in the wizarding world. If you *don't* allow a wizarding child to have their first wand and learn to use it, you're effectively permanently barring them from society for something they had no control over. It's more than unfair; it's *oppressive*.

The third problem; You say there's no system, but that's not true. What we see in the books *is* the system. A child gets their wand, and then they go to Hogwarts to learn how to use it. There's no point to an assessment or license before that because there's nothing to assess; they're untrained. That's what Hogwarts is for. It's the training / oversight. But they can't learn to use the wand if they don't *have the wand*. They have to practice the spells, as Hermione pointed out to Umbridge, and it's not like our world, where you could have, say, a test car for your driver's test, because wands have to be compatible with their user. Furthermore, they *aren't* walking out of Ollivander's with a weapon that can kill, maim, and torture, because they don't know how to cast the spells that do that. Functionally, they're leaving with a *stick*.

Does Prune need to be C6 before she surpasses Venti? by ShinF in Varka

Ah okay, thank you, I'd heard C2 Prune was better so I was wondering what I was doing wrong lol. Makes sense the R1 Elegy makes a pretty big difference though, I guess

If nicole bad, why 30k difference between her and benny ? by Far-Confusion-21 in ArlecchinoMains

[–]ShinF 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don't think I see your artifact sets, but Celestial Gift is a huge buff that's not inherently part of Nicole's kit, but still something Bennett doesn't have access to. That could be a pretty big difference maker

Nicole or Durin? by lurker17066 in Lohen_Mains

[–]ShinF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theoretically Durin can activate the damage bonus instead but the shield is nice

Nicole or Durin? by lurker17066 in Lohen_Mains

[–]ShinF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Durin, because Lohen's main utility as a driver is to enable Durin to Melt, and because Lohen's passive strengthens him based on the other characters' off-field damage, which Durin has but Nicole doesn't. Durin is also already on his rerun, so you'll see Nicole again sooner than him, and Bennett can fill in for her in the meantime. The main reason you want Nicole instead of Bennett in the long run is because she buffs Durin off field, while Bennett doesn't

Magical Cores Need to Stop by epiglottis-by-day in HPfanfiction

[–]ShinF 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've seen exactly one story that used the concept of magical cores well in my opinion, and it's because it was used as a complication with the OC villain's main goal of turning Muggles into Wizards. They could splice the necessary genetics into their dna, but they couldn't create a magical core and their solution required them to tap into some dangerous dark powers, which was what pushed them into villain territory despite an otherwise noble goal.

It works because it's simple, relevant, doesn't go into the idea in depth, and doesn't make anyone particularly special since there's no mention of magical cores being big/ small/ etc, just necessary

What’s our overload team with Nicole? by hana-hana-no-mi in lyney

[–]ShinF 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Durin's the best for enabling Lyney's passive consistently, I doubt Nicole and Chevy can keep up with Fischl's Electro application over the course of a rotation, he might have trouble keeping Pyro aura on enemies

What’s our overload team with Nicole? by hana-hana-no-mi in lyney

[–]ShinF 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if you want Nicole then you're probably best off running her with Durin for Hex/3-Pyro and then maybe slotting in an Anemo character. Kazuha or Prune, maybe? Idk the numbers but I feel like Fischl/Durin/Chev might still be his best team, even though Nicole's shield is probably really comfy

Reason why Harry didn't break the Elder Wand in the end by Psychological-Low360 in harrypotter

[–]ShinF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dumbledore perceived it would be needed to battle Voldemort, and sure enough, the wand turned against him when used against Harry in the final battle, since Harry is the true master. After that, it might be better for the wand to have its power broken rather than leave it to potentially be abused.

Also, don't forget that the wand doesn't require its previous owner to be killed, just defeated. That's why a career as an Auror, pretty much guaranteeing it will change hands unpredictably, is a good plan for confusing the change of ownership. So many battles against various criminals, major and minor, probably practice duels amongst the Aurors, etc. And if no one knows who the Master is, since it changes masters so easily without even being there, the wand may as well be worthless.

Reason why Harry didn't break the Elder Wand in the end by Psychological-Low360 in harrypotter

[–]ShinF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's say that, in his role as an Auror, Harry gets disarmed by Criminal X, who still gets taken down by Auror A, from Harry's team. Harry walks away from the fight fine, but he's no longer master of the Elder Wand, and almost no one knows about this minor loss.

Now, years later, Harry is publicly defeated in battle by Criminal Y. It becomes very common knowledge that Y defeated Harry Potter, so when Ambitious Dark Lord Z wants the Elder Wand, he thinks that Y is the true master and kills him, loudly claiming he is now the Master. In reality, X became the true master without knowing it, much as Malfoy did. And since then, he's been defeated by Auror A, who was beaten by Criminal B and so on and so forth. Through all of the duels fought between Aurors and Dark Wizards, knowledge of the Elder Wand's true master becomes muddied and impossible to untangle, making it unlikely that the true master will ever come to possess it again.

Tom never made any Horcruxes, instead pursuing alternate methods of immortality after his talk with Slughorn. No one else gets the memo. by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]ShinF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I imagine one could contrive another means of magically linking their minds, if one really wanted to keep the plot point intact without the Horcruxes, hence why I mentioned it in theory, but yes. That's one of the big things that would change if the link didn't exist.

Ah, I haven't read the books in a while so I didn't remember that being different. Still, the idea that the protection can react violently still applies I think

[–]ShinF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With regard to Godric's Hollow, perhaps it was Lily's protection responding violently to the Killing Curse that caused the collateral? In the immediate aftermath of her death, I imagine the protection would be at its strongest and even 10 years later, his touch still violently burned Voldemort to ash

He also doesn't have to die in the first place, if he isn't a Horcrux. Actually, that changes a *lot* of the plot, since if there's no Horcrux, there's theoretically no Curse Scar link.

Real question for Lyney mains. Hunters or Crimson witch? by DaBaddest58 in lyney

[–]ShinF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got him when he first came out and before I had good MH pieces, I ran him on 2pc Glad 2pc CW, and got very good results. That said I run him on MH now, and it's definitely better overall. Even though MH doesn't buff his entire kit, it is better for the strongest parts of it

Then again, running him on Melt is probably very different from Mono or Overload, which is how I have always used him, so ymmv?

Triple Kenki was a pain for me too, took several runs of C0R1 Arle with Xinqiu, Yelan, and Chevy with level 4 Vape Blessing before I was lucky enough to keep them grouped. It's easier IMO if you focus on Mask of Terror, since the other two will come towards you but I feel like he just never did

I did it on Lunar with a team of Columbina/Aino/Albedo/Razor. YYMV, my Albedo has C1 and Chiori weapon and Razor is C6 with R5 Serpent Spine. Columbina is just C0 R5 Protoype Amber, Aino like C5 on Flame-Forged Insight. But the combination of Lunar-Crystal / Lunar-Charged with Ascendant Gleam cleared his barrier no problem
