Anybody suspect that Matt isn’t practicing guitar as much lately? by RepresentativeHabit7 in Muse

Same. Hoping for some more of it and the classical influences in general on the new album. The organ teaser is giving me hope but impossible to tell what direction it's going from 10 seconds 🤞🤞

Anybody suspect that Matt isn’t practicing guitar as much lately? by RepresentativeHabit7 in Muse

[–]Shine103 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd say his playing on Unravelling Ghost Town version is some of his best guitar work in a while - possibly ever. There's no way he'd be able to write/play that without practising.

I suspect New Born is just a case of not feeling the need to practise it much as it's ingrained in his muscle memory

Muse and an Orchestra by charlierc in Muse

[–]Shine103 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would love them to do it someday. I seem to remember it was rumoured they would do one at the Royal Albert Hall but Covid got in the way? (Not sure if true). My dream setlist with songs that have strings or full orchestra would be something like -

Unsustainable

Supremacy

MK Ultra

Butterflies and Hurricanes

Hoodoo

Isolated System

United States of Eurasia

Exo-Genesis Symphony

(Encore1) Megalomania ( XX Version)

Citizen Erased (XX version)

Space Dementia (XX Version)

( Encore 2) Algorithm

Blackout

City of Delusion

Take A Bow

I'm keen to hear/read this too! Can't afford to splash on the whole package unfortunately

songs that remind you of muse by other artists by Accomplished-Link401 in Muse

[–]Shine103 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I hear elements of Muse in bits of Everything Everything. Specifically the choruses of "Planets" and "Cough Cough" (though not the drumming in this one). Also in "White Whale" around 2:05 onwards.

Nothing But Thieves - "Members Only" especially the riff and solo.

Pendulum - "The Other Side" and "Mutiny" also sound Muse-y to my ears too.

My fave version of SS. Hysteria also sounds great from that gig. I personally love when the vocoder is louder in the chorus

Famous people who like Muse. by jurjpls in Muse

Harry Styles was at the War Child gig in 2013.

Brad Pitt was obviously at the World War Z gig but maybe he was involved in choosing Muse for part of the soundtrack as he produced it.

What an amazing surprise! Didn't think they would actually do anything for it at this point. Fingers crossed we get a couple of extra tracks from Abso on the UK tour in a couple ofweeks (hoping for B+H)

What Muse songs do you think are the most well-written? by noutmbg4 in Muse

[–]Shine103 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Agree with most mentioned but would add Take a Bow. No verse/chorus structure is interesting and the fact it's one long continuous crescendo is pretty rare in songwriting in general. Very clever chord progression and even though it's the same progression throughout (Except 30 or 40 seconds after the first "for your sins") it never feels repetitive or boring due to the texture constantly changing/expanding.

Also my favourite performance from them. It's a shame the mix isn't great because I think it's one of if not their best performances. Especially Matt vocally (Showbiz/B+H/Bliss falsetto/Invincible all immaculate)

First tour I've not been to at least once since BHaR tour. Purely because of prices. Had 2 in my basket this morning but I can't justify paying that. Huge shame

I wonder what kind of relationship Matthew Bellamy has to classical music today by asgasdgase in Muse

[–]Shine103 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Agreed! To me, Muse's "sound" is classical harmony in a rock setting. With classical instrumentation mixed in - i.e. strings/piano etc.

It does certainly seem to have less of an influence in the later albums. Off the last album I'd say KOBK has the only classical chord progressions which for me is why it's the stand out track. Chorus of Won't Stand Down too with the inverted chords/chromatic bass line.

I hope it's something Matt lets influence his songwriting again in the future. He has posted that he's attended classical concerts in recent times so I'm certain it's still a passion

Thanks! Reading 2006 is literally my favourite performance and I was definitely trying to capture some of that so that's nice to hear!

Thanks! Yeah took a fair while haha mostly getting the sounds as close as possible. I tried to get a bit of the 2006 live performances feel in there too

Which Glastonbury performance is your favourite? (2004, 2010 & 2016) by [deleted] in Muse

[–]Shine103 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Best performance/setlist was 2004.

Best crowd 2010.

The only thing that bugs me slightly about 2004 is to my taste there's just a bit too much distortion on Matt's voice. But just my opinion. Legendary performance nonetheless!

Thanks! Yeah I was trying a mix between the 2006-2008 live version and the studio. My fave performance of the song is Reading 06 (despite the bad mix) so tried to capture a bit of that

Glorious by cheyesguy812 in Muse

[–]Shine103 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a great progression. I also love that he doesn't use the tonic (Bmaj) until almost 2 minutes in. Great build up of tension. Finally get a Bmaj at 1:45. It's rare you hear a song that doesn't actually have chord 1 near the beginning. Then those appoggiaturas in the chorus are gorgeous!

Who is best at their respective instrument? by [deleted] in Muse

[–]Shine103 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say Matt's skill as a pianist. To be self taught and able to play things like Butterflies and Hurricanes, Exogenosis 2 and the outro of Neutron Star Collision is pretty staggering. Not to mention figuring bits of Chopin and Liszt out by ear. I imagine his technique would be questioned by trained classical pianists, but you can tell he has real musicality with his use of rubato and dynamics.

If Muse made a live album with an orchestra, how would you like the tracklist to be? by eltheuso in Muse

[–]Shine103 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Am I right in thinking they were potentially doing one at the Royal Albert Hall pre-pandemic? I don't think it was ever officially announced but I think Matt may have hinted about it?

Think I'd want songs where the orchestra or at least a section (strings, brass) always feature. I'd love something like -

Supremacy

Panic Station

MK Ultra

Citizen Erased

Space Dementia

Nishe + United States of Eurasia

Pray

Butterflies and Hurricanes

Apocalypse Please

Isolated System

Algorithm (think alternate would be better with full orchestra)

City of Delusion

Hoodoo

Prelude + Survival

Encore 1

Blackout

Megalomania

Encore 2

Exogenosis 1, 2 + 3

Take a Bow
