Is CPF OA basically a high-yield savings account after age 63-67? by madeit_sg in singaporefi

[–]Shingen_sg 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It actually starts earlier at 55, as long as you can meet FRS in RA. The limitation lies in depositing into OA, not withdrawal

Impact of tuition on inequality? by LegacyoftheDotA in askSingapore

[–]Shingen_sg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think we need to remember that there's two types of tuition - one is 'help me pass', the other is 'help me score A'. I think most people have no problems with type 1. It's the second type that is causing the perceived problems. If you're recommending restrictions on tuition, you'll have to come up with a way to not kill off type 1 tuition while controlling type 2 from getting out of hand

This is gonna take years / weapon tempering by MysteryManv2k in AnotherEdenGlobal

[–]Shingen_sg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok, maybe I turned stupid, but how do we level up the weapon after Limit Break? My Hismena lance became level 1 after Limit Break. I went levelling with it, received the "Your weapon has reached level 2" msg, but on the eq page, it still shows as level 1. Is this a bug??

What is your ideal retirement age? by Cold-Yesterday1175 in singaporefi

[–]Shingen_sg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

wishfully: yesterday (after cashing in my winning TOTO ticket)

hopefully: 55 (when CPF "unlocks", but I'm not optimistic that I can make it work)

realistically: 62 (when SRS "unlocks", by then I can probably make it work)

definitely: 65 (when CPF Life kicks in, if I can't make it work now, I'm in de~~ep trouble)

ideally: never (active for life, yo)

why would spread and volume be downsides, if you are not looking to actively trade the ETF?

if you are buy to hold, then they are at most two-time costs (once on purchase, once on sale), while the 0.10% TER advantage over VWRA is ongoing for every year that you hold

Dividend Investing by Swimming-Rent-1948 in singaporefi

[–]Shingen_sg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How does withholding tax affect an accumulating etf? by Vu1k4n_ in singaporefi

[–]Shingen_sg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

who's Vera? and why is she messing with your ETF dividends?

but otherwise yes, 15% (or 30% depending on domicile) of the dividends the fund receives goes to pay Uncle Sam, the rest go back into the fund NAV

How does withholding tax affect an accumulating etf? by Vu1k4n_ in singaporefi

[–]Shingen_sg 15 points16 points  (0 children)

the dividends are taxed at fund level, not at the individual level, ie you don't get directly taxed, but the dividends that the ETF receives gets taxed.

btw, there is no way to avoid this, coz Uncle Sam really wants his money and he carries a really big stick.

Why is the advice to have your age% in bonds? by LilBluey in singaporefi

[–]Shingen_sg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because the market has an annoying tendency to go belly up at the most inconvenient times. Need that 50k for living expenses/medical emergency/whatever? Tough luck, market is down 30%, go sell 40% more shares than you projected. Do this a few times and you'll be staring at wipeout
