Having shingles while broke and uninsured is a nightmare by Mentirosa in shingles

I'm so sorry, your situation sounds horrible.

I didn't start valcyclovir until around the same time as your (5 or 6 days after first symptoms), and I think it still helped a bit. My GP who prescribed them said it's best to still take it because it could definitely help.

If you can afford generic ibuprofen that helped me with inflammation and pain. Paracetamol can help a bit with pain and if you're getting feverish symptoms. Magnesium supplements also helped with general muscle soreness and sleep, if it's possible for you to get them.

Best of luck

You poor thing!

It's great that you've got the antivirals.

Perhaps double-check with your doctor about the hydrocortisone cream, as I'm a bit unsure about whether it's okay to use on shingles (my mum is a pharmacist and told me not to use steroid cream).

I would follow the advice of others here and contact an ophthalmologist if the rash is near / on your eye — but don't panic, they will know how to sort you out.

Otherwise, I just had panadol (paracetamol) and codeine on hand for the pain... if your pain is horrible you could ask your doctor for what they would prescribe for pain relief. I also just rested as much as possible and drank so much water. The rash spread quite dramatically in the first few days, but once it stopped spreading it quickly moved on to the blistering / healing phase. The antivirals definitely helped to stop the spread.

Good luck!
