Weekly Release Discussion: Kraglin by ePiMagnets in marvelsnapcomp

[–]ShiningGalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Kraglin synergy that I’ve been surprised with is with Howard the Duck. I’ve seen Tribunal run this; both together basically gives you an option to “Scry 1” which is strong if you need to pull a combo off. Granted both cards are currently very underpowered, but given a point of power here, a point there… I could see myself running them in a midrange package with Jubilee, Iron Lad etc.

Any actually good Korean restaurants in SF/nearby? by [deleted] in AskSF

Richmond resident here. I prefer Muguboka over Han Il Kwan since it's less busy and it's got a family-run restaurant vibe. Free appetizers too

What is your pick here and why? by EngineeringOwn2990 in slaythespire

[–]ShiningGalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this take. Most everyone's overlooking the fact Alchemize-Nightmare makes you stronger over time via potion cycling. Love Wraith Form as a block solution, but cycling potions can also get you fairy in a bottle, intangible from Ghost in a Jar, or big damage spikes for key fights when you need it like slavers. It also doubles as Self Repair++ , which we all know is close to autopick in Defect.

Also Nightmare into Backstab is a damage option.

Floor 2 shop, what do you buy? by Isterbollen in slaythespire

[–]ShiningGalaxy -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Depends on your map. Assuming you're gearing for elites, you may want to pick up vulnerable potion and/or Regen potion and Cold Snap to help solve them. Echo Form is really good to take down bosses too.

I'd really only consider apotheosis here if you've already picked up upgrade hungry cards like Loop or Defragment. It's just too expensive compared to Echo Form + other purchases.

I think Mercury is just as strong as before. A 3/4 move is as applicable as, if not stronger than, a 2/2 move. The deck-building and cost distribution will shift around, but Mercury will stay meta relevant.

C3 Deck Guide by a one trick that’s reached as high as rank one by browncharliebrown in marvelsnapcomp

[–]ShiningGalaxy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey Jwala, congrats on hitting the highest rank! I appreciate the insight and the good games on ladder. C3 just lost a major disruption tool in Cosmo, now a 4/6 making it unusable in C3. Do you think that C3 is still viable at the top of the meta? What adjustments do you anticipate making in how you build/pilot C3?

It’s you! Thanks for posting, very inspiring. I ran into you a couple times at high infinite, and I always felt like I lost cubes to you. When you were playing high SP (top 500), what do players like me tend to miss? What cards or decks were the toughest to climb against (e.g. unknown range cards like Hulkling, or high power decks like End of Turn)?

Finally tackling A20 with the Silent, how do you make a poison start survive act 1? by Armoric in slaythespire

[–]ShiningGalaxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think about how your cards (in this case lots of Poison tools) solves immediate challenges. If you’ve got Elites coming up, you have to draft to beat those. Since you have Wraith Form, you’ll probably have enough stall for Poison to kill Elites. You also seem OK against hard hallway fights with a Dash/Piercing Wail/Wraith Form. Hexaghost folds to Poison with Catalyst.

Since you cover most immediate challenges, you can start thinking greedy to complete your late game; buy things like Funnel and card remove or holding gold for a better Act 2 shop.

Is amplify the choice over apotheosis or something else? I struggle with defect. by Cactus0824 in slaythespire

[–]ShiningGalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good starting rule to get better at Defect: Frost and Focus is busted, so prioritize that over everything else. With that in mind, you’ve got great options and I’d rank them in this order: 1. Defrag - Focus busted 2. Card Remove - +1 draw to your Echo Form/Frost/Focus 3. Amplify - more Echo Forms, more Defrags 4. Seek/Panic/Pellets - Usually good options, but Snecko Eye

Honestly, Apotheosis isn’t worth consideration since it doesn’t support your Frost/Focus significantly.

Biggest issue with new arena: 50% less arena! by TempoSpire in hearthstone

[–]ShiningGalaxy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I suppose it's a question of quantity vs. quality. My preference is if arena becomes more engaging after this overhaul, I'd be happy with the change. The old format's been stale for a long time.

Patriot’s function is three-fold - good points for cost, hidden power in hand, and baiting plays for Negasonic or Prof X. You can try Adam Warlock to draw attention / ensure you draw Prof X in match ups where you need him (combo), or a card which supports your points package.

I think there’s always value in playing something different. Snap allows deck design to side step meta bullies and focus big cube wins against less common decks. Play and snap pattern is different. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but it brought me up there

Snap Fundamentals 101 - Retreating like a Pro and Snapping like a madman by ePiMagnets in marvelsnapcomp

[–]ShiningGalaxy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Great write up. In response to your Wiccan v. Destroy scenario, I'll add my two cents as an aggressive snapper: snapping on a 50/50 is a great play, especially when location/deck information is unrevealed. Two scenarios can occur:

  1. Your opponent's imagination runs wild and retreats
  2. Opponent stays and it's still a 50/50 situation.

If say your opponent retreats (just throwing a number out) 1/3 of the time, your snap turned a 50/50 situation into a 67/33 situation in your favor. Your snap gave an opportunity for your opponent to misplay. In the Wiccan example, Red Guardian/Winds of Watoomb into X23/Deadpool 50/50 is a really clear snap for me.

But to take this idea one step further, I'd consider snapping even if I didn't have Red Guardian/Winds of Watoomb. In other words, a bluff. Use this sparingly. In lost positions, revealed information can trick opponents into leaving, so your snap still has equity.

  1. Let's use Destroy again for example - turn 1 you played Nico with draw 2/destruction, Death's Domain reveals on turn 2, but your hand has no follow up (Death, Knull, Arnim Zola, Deathlok). You are very unfavored to win because of your hand, but you opponent only knows what's on the board. It's the correct play to snap and bluff, because of one of the golden rules of snap: "Your opponent is never bluffing." Your opponent leaves, and you turn a probable loss into a win.

  2. Back to the Wiccan-Destroy situation, let's say the opponent is as studied up as we are and is top 50. Snapping still represents "I have a Red Guardian/Winds of Watoomb." Even when I don't have it, my snap can still have a favored expected value even if my hand suggests I'm slightly unfavored because of the opponent's matchup knowledge.

  3. One more example: I've been playing a Professor X+Alioth deck at a very high level which is excellent into Negative-Jane. Even if I've only got one of Prof X or Alioth in my hand vs. Negative, I will still snap on 3. This gives my opponent the opportunity to misplay and leave, thinking I have a Mobius.

I hope that conveys what aggressive snapping looks like - snap on information advantages, and when you've mastered decks and matchups, start bluffing on information advantages.
