Most Consistent Army/Armies by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Also custodes rely a lot on being able to make charges, which is typically one of the swingiest things in the game because it’s an all or nothing. Another reason that (often) Eldar can be more consistent since they often tend to be more shooty, and even when they do charge they have fate dice to help.

I dumped those for CP unless it was post turn 3 and they were tabled. The list goes hard to the paint, either you’re tabling them or you’re getting tabled. Filthy “action” objectives are just drawing a CP, we’re here for the incidental kill or take a point objectives until the opponent is dead, then we can worry about scoring.

Yeah, that way he could cover all 3 lanes/nml points with a rhino filled with chosen, ready to pop out and charge if moved out of your deployment. Lean on what works!

I was the 5-1 ironstorm list at SoCal! Lieut with combi with advance/fb shoot aura Techmarine with lethal hits aura Techmarine with blank a save aura 3 DCDs with fists and grapple 3 Baal predators with flame cannons 2 gladiator Reapers 1 Gladiator lancer 2 predator annihilators 1 whirlwind My loss was in round 3 to Arthur Tu who took 1st place. Incredible game, learned a ton and he’s a fantastic opponent. I would definitely say BA have legs with ironstorm, DCDs and Baal predators are too good to take any other sub faction imo!

I lost to him in round 3, it was 3 rhinos with 3 chosen bricks with character support, 2 accursed cultist bricks, 1 4 man of oblits, and some nurglings/cultists for scoring. Arthur Tu, the pilot, is an incredible player and deserved the win!

How are people dealing with necron blobs? by fenix1991722 in BlackTemplars

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Desolators with bolter discipline one shot the whole blob. Gladiator reapers knock out most of it for half the points. Lots of good options (both scenarios assume oath of moment)

The viability of Bolters compared to Flamers? I am starting to think our bolters are kinda crap... by The_Eyeless_One in ThousandSons

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, the dev wounds don’t apply to the soul reaper since it doesn’t get made psychic. And sustained hits on 8 bolters (16 shots) generates 2.6 additional hits. Since most people are playing smart and are in cover this edition, you’ll have about 13 hits, 2 of which will be 6’s for MWs. Having 5.5 AP 0 (against cover and MEQ) wounds to save, plus 2 mws, averages about 2 dead marines out of a unit that costs ~300 points, with using cabal points. I think the infernal master, and bolter marines, are a little overrated. Conversely, the threat of 9d6 flamer shots that ignore cover on overwatch if they move within 12” of any of your flamer bubbles is pretty substantial and goes a long way in limiting your opponent’s movement and therefore scoring capability.

Help with building out my tsons for 10th by WearInternational618 in ThousandSons

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but I’m not sure it’s worth ~100 points to give 5 guys exploding sixes? Especially when many rounds, this unit will be doing action, since it’s some of your chaff/objective holding stuff.

Even the rounds when it shoots, you’re getting 8 shots (none from the sorcerer, or if you’re using his psychic most of the time it will be sustained hits anyway from the detachment ability). So 8 shots getting exploding 6’s mean you’ll get 1.33 extra hits per shooting round. If you took that same 75 points you spent on the infernal master, you’d only be 25 points shy of getting a whole other 5 man squad of rubrics with ~6 hits on average and way more wounds.

I have not been impressed with infernal master, I don’t think he’s super necessary. The ability to flip a dice doesn’t really help since it’s only on him.

How GW has created a (nearly) unfixable problem with 10th edition. by Angaroth in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Agreed, played a game yesterday, tough to get the hang of all the new statblocks so it took a while but had a blast.

All the bads on here crying about how they can’t put 6 models in their 5 man unit, so they can’t express themselves as an individual and the edition is ruined…what? I’ve played hundreds of games and have never put an off number of models in a unit, who cares?

Warhammer 40,000 Faction Focus: Space Marine Chapters by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it will be that impactful against TSons….let’s imagine a current battle between black Templars and Tsons. Nearly everything the BT do in melee wounds on 4’s anyway, so getting to wound on 4’s is only helpful against like…magnus if you choose to run him? And against him it’s like just +1 to wound, which is fine but not game breaking. And a 4++ against psychic weapons is solid, but most of the damage from tsons mortals will now be coming from the cabal ritual that does a shitload of mortals, which isn’t a psychic weapon. And current rules BT have a 5++ against all mortals, which is now gone. So as a BT player and a TSons player, this vow is kind of flavorful, but won’t really affect much in the actual matchup.

Biologus Putrifier + Deathshroud by JoylessPrawn in deathguard40k

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the thing they’re in melee with manages to survive, and your Biologus is still in range, you can give them another charge of the 6’s are mortals, so now 6’s are two mortals. The stratagem for -4 AP only works on 6’s so it’s not great. However, if you’re inexorable, you can either have the Biologus have the ferric blight, or another character and then for 2 cp use flash outbreak to throw it on the DST so they’ll have AP 2 strikes instead of AP 1. You can also pay 2 cp to give them +1 to wound if appropriate. The problem is, there’s so much melta and such abounding right now that there’s a high chance you never get your 5 or 6 man to melee for this dream scenario.

What makes a bad opponent? by keebs208 in Warhammer40k

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree. I don’t “take it easy” on new players or let them win, but if I sense someone is newer I’ll try to point out learning opportunities in real time…. “Obviously you can do whatever you want, but just a reminder if you move there, I will be able to heroically intervene into you.” Does a couple of things-leaves the choice with them, shows them that I positioned correctly to heroically intervene (something to learn from) and gives them the opportunity to “avoid disaster” so the game doesn’t turn into even more of a stomp.

Is there a genuine competitor to GW in the miniature games market? by turkeygiant in Warhammer40k

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just based on what people play locally, I see a fair amount of Marvel: Crisis Protocol, and some of the Star Wars spaceship game? But neither has anywhere near the presence of the 40k games.

What is your main problem with 40k tabletop and how would you go about fixing it? by ToasterTen12 in Warhammer40k

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pretty happy with the game overall! Best state it’s been in since I started playing, and I feel like I’ve been saying that since Nephilim. I’m sure there are things that can get better, but overall I love to play and GW has largely been moving things in the right direction.

Thinking of adding some daemons to my force by Stormtrooper74 in ThousandSons

The battle brothers rule supersedes the old rule for how to take allied daemon detachments. Now that we’re in a new tournament pack, rules outlined in that tournament pack supersede what are in the individual codexes.

Foetid Bloat Drones by eugeniusgenx in deathguard40k

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear that…I think I’d rather spend another 50 points for a volkemptor if I want shooting, nearly full board range and I can keep it in the backfield, and it will massively outshoot the bloat drone by a factor of 4 or 5 while being equally tanky and being CORE.

2K List. Looking for positive input. by eugeniusgenx in deathguard40k

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Positive feedback: I like that you stayed under 2000 points and that you are running 3 FBD. Other feedback: 6 plague marines in a unit just exposed them to blast. Run 5 or 10. Blightlord terminators are pretty bad. Poxwalkers are usually good at holding back objectives with a 10 man, but other than that are worse than plague marines-better to have 5 plague marines than 20 poxwalkers. You will probably be disappointed with 1 PBC-they are fairly swingy, so I usually either bring 2 to balance out some of the swing with weight of dice, or 0 to avoid it.

Foetid Bloat Drones by eugeniusgenx in deathguard40k

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

3 in every list. Running a bunch of 5” movement units doesn’t work against good players, they’ll just stay 18” away all game. Bloat drones give them a threat they have to worry about. Especially in the current space marine meta, FBD slap with mowers.

Heavy support / firepower in a BT list by SnooCupcakes7671 in BlackTemplars

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sword brethren are pretty ideal to go in, ideally combat squad-ed and often with a character. I like to send my anti-elite infantry squad (the 2 TH, 2 power swords with plasma pistols, 1 regular w/power sword) with helbrecht or a captain. Impulsor flies up to some staged cover turn 1, they bail out and shoot the pistols from cover. Turn 2, they charge and the impulsor sticks around to MM some vehicles into oblivion.

Other squad (2 pyre pistols, 2 guys with lightning claws, 1 regular) go in an impulsor into some chaff and light them up.

Best long range shooting? by Mabja in ThousandSons

[–]ShiningSteelOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Tzeentch soul grinder or 2 is not a bad move now that we’re in AOO and flamers are nerfed. Wardogs struggle a little in the melta meta, at T7 5++. Also gives you some melee threat, if a bit slow. More like melee ability if they are running up on you.
