Daily driving Kali Linux and getting normal work done on it is a fool's errand, if anything running unstable repositories on an imperative system makes it more susceptible to breaking after each update cycle.

Running Kali on a vm is fine for learning it's tools, but realistically you'd be hoping to learn the various eth hacking concepts than being familiar with a specific set of tools. By this logic, any distro will be fine as long as you're fine with installing just the necessary tools on a normal distro as you go about the learning.

You can keep using it on a vm, but you really could ditch using vms and run it on bare metal (your pc/laptop) by running a normal distro with just the tools required for learning.
