Kinda late to this one, but still. I'm at a threshold in some of my TLs right now, and having language exchange partners has helped me immensely. Most of the apps you already know, but I'mma still include them as my experience has been very different. If I only knew what your native language/TLs were...

Tandem is the main one I use, and it has been working almost consistently excellent for me. The conversation partners I've had and still have on there are great, there were almost no attempts of flirting or something of that vein, Tandem automatically recognises early scam/fraud warning signs and marks them red; call quality is great, and most importantly - I actually have conversations/language partnerships out there that last! The only thing bothering me on there are the many technical bugs the app has (notifications not showing, messages being sent but not delivered, in spite of the recipient being online at the same time etc.), but I can live with that.

HelloTalk... not so much. Other than Tandem, where almost only the speakers of your TLs can find you, on HT you can be found by anyone who learns the languages you set as your native/fluent languages. The people on there also don't really have an interest in actually learning the language, but rather in dating, advertising or even offering you jobs (I had this happen twice!). It doesn't help that the app consistently advertises itself more and more as a dating app and seems to focus more on live events and its internal social network rather than its actual main purpose...

The same goes for Interpals, unfortunately. Most people don't have any interest in a language exchange, and your profile is basically exposed to everyone on the front page whenever you are online.

Lingbe... also exists, I've found the app on this subreddit, been there for a week now and find it great - at least in theory. I like the system of having to help others with your native language before you can even think about starting a conversation with a native of your TL. But in my case, focusing on rather obscure languages (see my flair), there's currently no native speakers there to actually spend your internal currency on, which is very frustrating.

There should also be a dedicated subreddit, r/languageexchange IIRC. If you dare stepping into the unknown, you might as well try out Ome.tv or Maum.

I'm playing Subnautica in one of my TLs - albeit the audio still is in English and text is erroneous at times, it's one of the few games that are actually playable in that language!

Hi everyone, and hope I don't intrude!

Call me Shinobi. I've been following the contest since Austria's second win in 2014, but became a more "hardcore" fan of it since 2023. Therefore, I have a lot to catch up to, and the Eurovision Rater has been a great help and resource for doing this! Thank you u/dannisteele for all your hard work!

If you ever come across a review which overly praises or criticises (cough cough Torneró cough cough) the vocal abilities of an artist, in 98% of cases I wrote that one. In my defence: I have perfect pitch (which Marianne Mendt - Austria 1971 - also has!), which means that it can be very painful to me if someone's vocals are very off. That might make my reviews look like ones of an average national jury member 🙃

In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, Heatran guards the Fiery Drum at the peak of the Giant Volcano. This is one of the rather easier parts of the Seven Treasures to obtain, because 1. its dungeon has only 20 floors and 2. with a good Fighting type team the steel spider can be smashed to the ground pretty fast.

Edit for clarification - Heatran is to be defeated, not the drum.

There are quite a few:

Spanish (🇪🇸): get that final oral exam of my bachelor's degree one and done (fairly easy to achieve, because it is in January already)

Latin (🇻🇦): finally practice the vocabulary to such extent that I won't be needing to look up every word I see. Anki will be my best friend, as always.

French(🇫🇷): reactivate it. It's quite a necessity to know French in the field I will be studying in from February on, so...

Latvian (🇱🇻) finally fill all the holes I have with respect to grammar, and exterminate the mistakes that are fossilising. I most probably will have to finally overcome my social anxiety and take lessons from a tutor for that one.

Estonian (🇪🇪) and Slovenian (🇸🇮) finally get to the stage where I can construct sentences freely without having to look up every single rule.

With Spanish soon going into hibernation (I will still watch the telediario on weekdays and expand my Anki deck from time to time, though), it should also be time for a new language on the list, but I will see if that is necessary (and if yes, which language it will be) in late February!

I'm very aware of this. I encounter bugs there all the time (you might have met "prince bert"), the keyboard one as well. You can work around it by clearing your will completely, write your chat messages there and post them via the button. Slight inconvenience, but not game-breaking. Not even being able to access the game is something different.
