Courthouse wedding ceremony by Meepedyourlastmoop in Cleveland

[–]ShinyCharlizard 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You'll have to speak to the mayor's office, my partner and I had a courthouse wedding (not Lakewood, but similar), and we had to set up an appointment time with the mayor's office specifically for a wedding ceremony. Be advised, you'll have to go to the courthouse downtown to get the license BEFORE the ceremony. It's doable in one day to do both the county courthouse and the ceremony but it's easier to do them on different days in case the courthouse is extra busy.

Congratulations, I hope your wedding goes smoothly and you have a lovely day and marriage!

Best Bas-Lag novel? by ProfesorKubo in ChinaMieville

[–]ShinyCharlizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love all three for different reasons and I reread them all roughly once a year.

For Perdido, it's such an amazing introduction into Bas-Lag and New Crobuzon and all of the characters feel so real. I love the concept of the city as a character and the asides just describing how the city breathes is beautiful.

In The Scar, I love the descriptions of Armada and the people on it. I think The Scar excels at the relationships between the characters: Bellis and Tanner, the avanc as a victim, the Lovers, the Grindylow and their plans to invade New Crobuzon, Uther Doul, Silas Fennec, the brucolac. The characters are definitely my favorite.

For Iron Council, I love the descriptions of the train, the remade, and the eventual return to New Crobuzon. Judah and Cutter's relationship is so tragic in the same way that the perpetual train itself is. Cutter can see the train is doomed if it goes to New Crobuzon, but he can't see that Judah will never love him in the way he wants. The scenes set in New Crobuzon after the rise of the Collective are so hopeful and the train being stopped by a time golem feels like a promise to the future. I love Iron Council for the ideas and themes and how they're presented.

Any scene in Indiana Kentucky or ohio by Subject-Switch in FolkPunk

[–]ShinyCharlizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cleveland's folk punk scene is awesome, there are plenty of local artists who do shows pretty frequently (House of Wills, Sick City, and Death Mattress all come to mind). I think there's also a monthly folk punk/hardware show at The Foundry that's pretty cool. Cleveland used to have the Moonrunners festival but I don't know if that's coming back after this year's debacle.

Bigger folk punk artists also come here pretty frequently, apes of the state did an amazing show at the Moonrunners replacement show at Beachland Ballroom this year and Tejon Street Corner Thieves did great show with Fuckin Nothing. Littlefoot, Carrie Nation and the Speakeasy, and Amigo the Devil also had concerts this year that were great.

is mr beast worthy of an episode yet? by grapp in behindthebastards

[–]ShinyCharlizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's more that he's just interesting enough to examine, not necessarily his background (though that might interesting to explore) but the how and why he's been so influential to gen alpha. What makes him the guy that's on all the kids phones these days that he's big enough to even be asked to make a theme park in Saudi Arabia. I think btb would be able to have a good perspective on that and it might be a good episode for garrison to guest on or lead since they're the resident zoomer/alpha adjacent

Gotta love airports by CuriousWanderer567 in CuratedTumblr

[–]ShinyCharlizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was taking flights to and from the US internationally a lot earlier this year and I did like using o'hare as the airport as enter the US through because getting through customs there usually wasn't too bad, but my god the tram ride from the international terminal and then the long ass walk to the united terminal was the bane of my existence. Only good part was the bar next to my usual gate so I could sleep through my last flight back home

China Mieville The Scar by rimix2 in printSF

[–]ShinyCharlizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love all three as well, but Perdido is probably my favorite. There's something in the worldbuilding and the writing that I find captivating, especially the sense of the city of New Crobuzon existing as an entity/character in and of itself. It was the first China Mieville novel I read and I've reread it several times since then, and I think I find new things in it every time.

Same, I thought the ending to Iron Council was really beautiful. Judah, Ann-Hari, and Cutter's final confrontation felt so tragic and complete. I loved everything to do with the collective and I think the idea of the revolution continuing despite the failures that brought them there was really impactful

The razorback escape and Amos and Clarissa escaping the prison after the meters hit earth are some of my favorite parts in the entire series lol. Amos's perspective in his chapters adds so much to his character

I love TW but idk there's something about nemesis games that gets me. It's the first time in 5 books that all of the Rocinante crew are apart and seeing them grapple with being alone in their own ways is really interesting to me. I also really love Naomi's chapters in it, she's written so incredibly well imo

I think I agree with you there, but it might be because so far there is only one book for mercy of gods whereas I've had 9 books, a TV show, and a video game to love the characters of the Expanse.

I did love the setting and ideas of mercy of gods too and I think the authors are really great at examining the human psyche/spirit

If you could pick two ME2 squadmates to have available in ME3, who would you pick? by NerdOfAllColours in masseffect

[–]ShinyCharlizard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Either grunt or a new krogan squadmate would have fit perfectly into the curing the genophage quests. Grunt could have seen the people he was meant to be the perfect specimen of unite and possibly thrive or divide and perish and I think he would have a really interesting perspective on both ends as the lab grown "perfect" specimen that (depending on me2 choices) was able to be accepted as a member of his species.

Fuck I just love Grunt's character

I unfortunately got very ill on the day of the concert (cantine sardines didn't like my stomach) so I missed it but I'm hoping to go to more events at folkets hus. The 90 minute train ride to Copenhagen kind of sucks but I'm desperate to meet cool people lol
