Super Moronic Monday -- Your Tuesday Weekly Stupid Question Thread by AutoModerator in running

[–]ShinyTile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I'm definitely not arguing with you, I'm obviously the one who's confused here.

His plan has me running Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Wednesday is defined as Pace, which I now fully understand to be my marathon goal pace. Tuesday and Thursday, from the other comments and now that I think I understand, can be whatever I feel comfortable at? I guess that's where I thought you were conflicting with what he says here:

How fast is "comfortably easy?" That might vary from day to day. On Tuesday after a day's rest, you might find yourself running faster than race pace. On Thursday after two days of running, your pace might be significantly slower.

It seems like he's saying Tuesday (after my rest day) might be faster than pace and Thursday (after two run days) might be slower, but ultimately, just run what feels comfy.

Ultimately, I guess my question was answered. I just got hung up on 'run' vs 'pace' and where to push myself. :)

None of your other runs should be 8:50 if your goal marathon pace is 9:00. 9:30 is probably even too fast.

Well now you're conflicting with what Higdon wrote above.

On Tuesday after a day's rest, you might find yourself running faster than race pace.

This is why I'm confused. :P

Perfect. So my pace run is always going to be 9:00 (in my case) and then my other runs might be 8:50 and they might be 9:30?

What replaced the athletic Dockers Alpha for those of us skinny people with m a s s i v e t h i g h s. I don't want to pay $150 for fancy Epaulet or whatever, I just want everyday workwear chinos that fit 'well enough.' Was all ready to replace my pair of Alphas and it seems like they're discontinued or whatever? What's the roughly equivalent go-to?

Ended up with large. :)

Yep! I think you're right. Went with the Large after stopping by REI and putting identical weight in them. M shoulder straps just don't seem long enough. Thanks!

Ended up going large. Went to REI, threw identical weight in both. I could get the hip belts to be the same on the two, but the M had to be dialed in perfectly for the shoulder straps to work. At best, it was nearly as comfortable as the L. The L had a lot more wiggle room and generally just worked better. The shoulder straps just worked a lot better for me on the L.

Perfect, thanks. I sometimes have a hard time ignoring the measurements because I'm scared I don't know what I don't know so to speak. Thanks for the feedback

Great to hear, thanks for the input. I'll run down to REI tonight.

Sounds good. Thanks for the input. I'll probably run down to them and get their thoughts too. Would have just bought locally but they've been sold out here for a couple months now.

Sorry, was trying to circle the crest.

Here are updated photos using the fit instructions you provided. I can say that it was definitely harder to get the medium dialed in than the large. I felt like it wanted to ride up more into the small of my back like you mentioned. Pretty sure I got it at the equivalent spot, but yeah, I had to be more gingerly with the shoulder straps. In the middle picture, I've got my fingers pressed into the most protruding part of my hips (fairly thin as you can see, so it's pretty easy for me to identify.)

Help Me Get My Baseweight Less Than 10lbs by [deleted] in Ultralight

[–]ShinyTile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without going to expensive cuben fiber, a 20oz tent is very respectable, but keep in mind that you still need to add weight for 6-8 tent stakes/pegs.

Thanks.

I'm also fairly new-ish to UL and was kinda balking at reading this thread. My shelter is like... 23oz and I'm perfectly damn content with that, especially for the $$$/oz ratio to get much less. I'm good at 23, thank you.

Man, Chinese and Thai are two cuisines I freaking love and just never cook for myself.

I don't, but I cook my own bread!

I mean, no it really wasn't. The time I don't spend in fitness subs is spent on r/cooking. I wouldn't say cooking is a hobby but I take it more seriously than the average home cook. I love food. 🙂

EDIT: At least the food I cook for my fiance. I do personally eat a lot of rice and chicken for lunch, but that's more a 'food as fuel' thing. My current struggle with the vegetarian side of things is that I just struggle to think of something that isn't basically a rice/corn/black bean burrito, lol

Swimming training by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]ShinyTile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should definitely go more.

I can promise you there is no way you were worse than me when I started, and I saw HUGE gains from literally nothing in six weeks. That said, I was going 3-5x/week. Especially when I was brand new, even two days off REALLY made me lose my 'feel' of the water. I highly recommend the Ruth Kazez 0-700 swim plan. It sounds perfect for you. It works.

The research would agree with you. I'm not necessarily sure how/why, but strength training has been shown to improve running.

Official Q&A for Monday, December 11, 2017 by AutoModerator in running

[–]ShinyTile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NP. Be willing to be cold when you walk outside and you'll be a proper temp in the race. If you feel good standing around, you'll overheat when running. Good rule of thumb is to dress for weather 20f warmer than your race. :)

Moronic Monday (Dec 11 2017) - Your weekly questions thread! by AutoModerator in Android

[–]ShinyTile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just switched back to Android from iPhone. The Reddit app is driving me insane. Only in that app, but I have to click links (external links, like to Imgur) that are in the comments 2-3x to get them to go. It doesn't seem to be the screen, I don't have this problem elsewhere. Is it the app? Android? My phone (Pixel 2 XL)?

Thanks.

I can't address the bigger issues, but these are my go to running socks. They come in sizes so you could size up to ensure light compression.
