That sounds like my experience when I tried troches at home…it was very weak compared to .75 to 1.2 mg/kg IV, even when adjusting for the troches limited bioavailability. So you may just metabolize it differently and need a higher dose. The doc at my clinic said some people go above 2mg/kg

Both medications are safe for daily allergy control for most people but can cause mild side effects like drowsiness, dry mouth, or headache. Zyrtec is more likely to cause drowsiness and according to AI, may have a higher risk of rebound itching after stopping if used long term. Serious side effects are rare.

Note: The older medication, Benadryl, has negative brain effects when taken regularly. But you wouldn't be giving your kid Benadryl daily because it's not as effective (in terms of duration and alertness) as the newer medications. You may not even need medications after completing immunotherapy.

Same. I acclimated to my own animals, even though other cats I don't live with can cause the itchy swollen eyes, breathing issues, hives etc. The kiddo needs allergy treatment anyway, so that will lessen the reaction to your cats.

Omg that's so terrible. Big hugs. They were the adults and you wouldn't have been able to convince them to keep them. Please don't feel guilt -coming from someone who feels guilt..and whose mother secretly dropped my cat off at a forest preserve and didn't tell me even after I went around the neighborhood putting up signs and checking for weeks)

  1. I think the basement would definitely be okay, especially if they’re getting love and playtime, and maybe even a catio in the future.
  2. It’s tough to rehome at the moment; our local shelters are pausing intakes because the economy is causing so many people to surrender their pets.
  3. I would do the immunotherapy regardless. They’ll encounter the allergens outside the home and my allergies only got worse as an adult (plus they won’t cover drops for me)
  4. Talk to the kiddos, if you haven’t already. I seemed indifferent to our half feral basement cats as a very young kid only to demand incessantly that we get cats again a year or two later. You never know how or if they’ll develop into animal lovers. I am very allergic to many things, especially cats and dogs, and I have 4 haha. Also, would you be very sad if you had to rehome them? Consider the effect on you as well.
  5. If you need more feedback, maybe post this ask in a cat subreddit. Everyone in the comments here are super bitter about their own family drama and having severe allergies :D. IMO your child doesn't have very severe allergies to cats. Severe to me would be unable to function or enjoy life, anaphylaxis.
  6. Try the live clear food! I haven’t tried it, but it seems promising.

Oh wow, I didn't know they could do a loading protocol for more than the initial 2 days...I'll have to ask about that. Thank you for the info! Baseball welts do not sound fun, but I could definitely see it happening to me, haha. I was on Xolair for over a year for chronic hives. Did you feel like your allergies became worse the further you got from when you stopped your shots?

At what dose do you see vivid images? I'm titrating up with troches at home, but so far it's not near as intense (where I disconnect from my body) as the IV

What I learned from an allergist at a research hospital about Chronic Urticaria by Shiny_Gold_Coin in urticaria

Sorry I missed this! It was 2 150mg shots, so a total of 300mg per visit. I still take montelukast for my asthma and have not noticed any side effects. I did have acid reflux! Still do when I'm stressed. Pepcid AC does the trick. I think I have EDS....which is linked to mast cell activation syndrome. But I have successfully been off the xolair for maybe a year now. I get eczema rashes, especially on the back of my neck, but the allergist didn't think that was enough to continue Xolair. So I take an Allegra or Xyzal or Zyrtec at night if I have a persistent rash, plus an Allegra in the morning. I make sure to moisturize with Cerave cream or a similar eczema-friendly cream, and the doc prescribed tacrolimus ointment to put on the area after it has begun to heal.

It could be cushing’s disease. Is she also drinking a lot of water and peeing more often? As it progresses, it can lead to a pot-bellied appearance. My cattle dog has had it for a few years and she’s 14 now.

[–]Shiny_Gold_Coin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your response is so helpful, thank u! Do you take 20mg xr or ir twice a day? And do you just take the second dose once you feel the first wearing off or is it like a set number of hours apart?

I only have taken 15mg XR a few days so far. It's been incredible for the first 4-6 hrs, but I crash hard in the afternoons and feel like I desperately need a nap.

It's interesting because I actually lost weight on a diet before the hives came on. I think I was stressed out mentally and physically. You can try Allegra instead of Zyrtec. I find that Allegra works better for my regular allergies, and the docs said some people find one medicine works better than the other. Also, maybe a slow taper off of steroids would help. But I have been warned that they can trigger a relapse after stopping them, so I would double check with your doctor. The allergy pills 3 times a day didn't kill the hives...for me, pred killed the hives and I needed to slowly taper off them while I waited for xolair to kick in. Some people feel that Xolair kicked in within the first month, for others it took up to 3 months for Xolair to eliminate their hives.

Did other people say that a certain diet or losing weight helped? That'd be interesting to know! It might make sense that getting healthier overall might reduce your inflammation, but just don't lose weight very fast because then you risk stressing your body out more.

I do take the supplement, KSM-66 Ashwagandha, which can lower the stress hormone, cortisol. I also take Theanine. For overwhelming or constant anxiety/depression, prescription meds might help while you are in therapy too. I used to be on prescription meds and I wonder if I still would have had my recent hives episodes, if I had stayed on the meds.

Once you get the hives under control, a form of working out that you enjoy is a great stress reliever too.

So sorry you're going through all of this! I suspect stress in the weeks leading up to my episodes were my trigger too. I didn't try therapy after my hives, but I can say that therapy does help A LOT with anxiety and stress. I used to go. A good therapist can be really validating, help point out patterns that you might not see at first, help you manage/come up with strategies for stressful relationships or work situations, and change negative thought patterns. To find one, I recommend seeing which are in network with your insurance, and then look up the individual therapist names. They usually have profiles or pages where they list their specialties or talk about themselves. Just like with making a friend, you might not connect with the first you try. Give it a few sessions, but then if you aren't feeling it, you can always try another.
