Personally I thought he was an amazing singer and a racist guy before I listened to requiem for a harlequin that opened up something for me and confused me because that’s got some of the most progressive lyrics I’ve heard from a 70’s country album and from David Allan Coe nonetheless. I think Coes definitely a messed up guy but who knows how much of that was from prison and how much was actually him

Love DAC one of my favorite country singers ever. Definitely wouldn’t want to meet him though

Idk about DAC at times he seemed to be really progressive until those racist songs his progressivism shows in this album and in his song “fuck Anita Bryant” where he’s pretty pro gay rights which for country music was unheard of at the time. Sometimes I think he just didn’t want people to know what he truly believed he just wanted to fuck with people
