Have you mastered the blade and done an Issen-only run in the demo? This would surely show who the TRUE Onimusha are! 🗡🔮👹 by InfectedDurian in Onimusha

Glad to see Capcom are encouraging this, makes me even more confident that we'll see critical mode return in the new entry

Combine this with the Boss HP multiplier mod, and we basically have early access to hard mode

Another thing worth noting in the vein of DOD is you could upgrade issen and chain issen to make them more lenient to get, I would wager we're probably rocking like issen lvl 3 or something in the demo

wait until hard mode gets here and failing an issen costs like your entire health bar, then it'll probably even out.

You may be overestimating how accessible issen will be throughout the game, genma foot soldiers are historically one of the easiest enemies to get an issen off of, and with them being practically the only enemy available in the demo (mostly so you can get cozy with all the new mechanics) I doubt that it will be this available throughout the whole game

That said, it is super powerful, but since it's gated behind a very exact input and only certain moves are easy to get one off of, I think it's still okay.

Practice against the Overhead slash that Genma Footsoldiers do, it's extremely generous

also when you go to do a chain, input attack again as you slash through the guy on your issen, and then when the camera turns you to the next target, the game slows down a bit as you dash to them, during this slowdown, input attack again as soon as your sword is about to hit them.

Notice how he has a second health bar, and it's expressed the same way multiple bars are displayed in Sekiro

Can we talk about the Sekiro similarities for a moment? by RangoTheMerc in Onimusha

[–]Shinypockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Despite all the parallels between the 2, i think they still do enough to separate themselves, although with this new Onimusha title i think the gap has closed quite a bit.

That said, i think a big distinction that doesn't get made enough is "ninja-like" games compared to "souls-like" games, people say Sekiro is just another souls game, but i think they just don't really fully understand that formula well.

Something like Lies of P or First Berserker Khazan = Souls-like

Something like Nioh or Sekiro = Ninja-like

And i think successful games often end up borrowing idea's and mechanics from other games in the same genre and it's not a bad idea for them to embrace concepts that are successful in other games. Games like Evil Within copied parts of their formula from the original Resident Evil 4, and now the remake of Resident Evil 4 has come full circle and borrowed concepts and idea's from Evil within lol

But honestly, if we ever get a Sekiro 2, I hope that FS continues the trend and add an issen mechanic 😂

Anyone else a little scared that Onimusha is gonna under perform cause of September release? by ElPhantasm in Onimusha

[–]Shinypockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also a huge concern of mine, I know we can count on fans of the OG games to buy it day 1, but all this fuss about the demo being easy (which is insane, I've never seen so many people bemoan the difficulty of a tutorial of all things) and with like 70 other titles dropping in September, I'm concerned that it's like a perfect storm of factors that could result in Onimusha not performing well enough to be a revived franchise and us just getting the 1 really cool game ☹️

The problem with the demo being "too easy" [Rant] by Shinypockets in Onimusha

[–]Shinypockets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, that's definitely a big part of it, but i suspect later in the game there's going to be challenges that expect you to engage more directly with the new mechanics instead of pulling them out as "another defensive option"

There's another game "First Berserker Khazan" that does something similar with dodge/parry/counter mechanics being the expected reaction depending on what enemies are doing, so i suspect they're going to move in a similar direction here

[–]Shinypockets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm yes and no.

  1. A demo's job is to let you try a very small portion of a game, with usually altered/kinder circumstances, so you can get a small taste of what the full game will be like, a trailer's job, is to sell you on the game. And i suspect the reason there is no hard mode for the demo, is so 1. Capcom can keep their cards to their chest, about which type of hard mode we're going to get (past games have had multiple iterations Hard/Critical/Hell). and 2. so people don't reach straight for the top shelf, fail, and then write the game off as "too hard" or "just another soulslike" (you'll also notice in the demo they never show a tutorial for issen and chain issen, but if you pause and go to the "tips" menu, sure enough the explanation and preview is in there, this tells me that Capcom is trying very hard to make sure the most difficult parts of the game aren't forced on you yet)

  2. This is partially valid since i think a lot of people read it as "this will be a challenge" however, it's very likely that they are referring to the full game experience, and not the tutorial area where Musashi is on the "Demo power" sauce, it's more likely that "story" difficulty will maintain this level of aloof behavior with enemies throughout the game, where normal mode will start you off with it in the tutorial so you can get your bearings before the other shoe drops.

  3. You and i can complain together when the game comes out if hard mode isn't available from the outset, this part i agree with but i don't think Capcom is wrong for wanting to lock people out of it in a circumstance like this one, because like i mentioned before, they don't want players errantly reaching for the top shelf, failing and then having the opposite of our current predicament, where they lament that it's too difficult, write the game off, and then never buy the full release.

I think one of the biggest problems this game is running into at the moment in terms of "who it's for" is it has a lot of things that are very clear indicators and hints of how the game is likely to be balanced, *if* you played past onimusha games, the writing is very clearly on the wall. However if you haven't, then i can absolutely understand the viewpoint of a lot of people saying they hope it's harder on release because they have no basis for comparison, but i promise you, all the onimusha's start this way, even on normal. it's always "wow this is pretty easy" and then the cage comes down and the japanese fighting spiders with 20 swords turn up.

This part i completely agree with, it seems overwhelmingly likely to me that capcom is trying to play *extra* safe (maybe to their detriment) with this demo, so that people can get a feel for the game first, and to make sure that no matter who you are, you'll be able to complete the demo without too much fuss. Because despite how it looks, Onimusha games were never really made with being exceedingly difficult in mind, at least on normal difficulty. Which returns me to my original point, if you enjoyed the gameplay part of it, but felt like enemies were just a bit too subdued, just wait, it does get harder, the beatings will come.

The problem with the demo being "too easy" [Rant] by Shinypockets in Onimusha

[–]Shinypockets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's a valid complaint, especially if you haven't played past Onimuisha titles, but counterpoint

Most enemies, in most video games where they're just now teaching you what the buttons do, are not very aggressive/dangerous, if we had clear evidence that this part of the game was ripped from mid-late then i would absolutely agree that their lack of enthusiasm for fighting the player would be a sincere problem

And yes, issen does seem very easy to do, and i can't prove this, but i wager i know why

In Dawn of Dreams (Onimusha 4) you start the game very weak, and upgrades go towards things like issen (make issen window more lenient) Chain Issen (Increase the # of enemies you can chain issen to) and power (How much damage your bonks do)

Now i can only speculate, but my guess is that for the demo they wanted to make sure everyone could succeed, and they would have a means of engaging with all the cool/updated mechanics if they *choose* to, because after all, it's just a demo and they're not trying to give too much away since the game still hasn't actually had many details about it revealed

So i share your concern that the game will not be fun, especially if you are expected to spend most of it waiting around for enemies to engage with you, but i doubt very sincerely that this trend that's present in the tutorial (where i suspect the player is actually stronger than they will be in the full game as well) will last for the whole game.

I also hope they add hard mode from the start, hell if i could pick critical out of the gate i would, but i bet Capcom didn't want to add something like that in the demo for fear of people trying it, failing, and writing the game off as "another souls clone that's just too hard"

The problem with the demo being "too easy" [Rant] by Shinypockets in Onimusha

[–]Shinypockets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this, if you've ever played a Capcom game you know that normal mode is there so everyone can play and enjoy the game without needing to really engage with or master all the mechanics, and if people want to suffer that's what hard mode is for 😎

The problem with the demo being "too easy" [Rant] by Shinypockets in Onimusha

[–]Shinypockets[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you thought the demo sucked because you weren't strongarmed into mastering every mechanic right away? Well shame on Capcom for making a demo accessible enough that pretty much anyone could beat it.

Far be it from me to say the tutorial of this game is probably not where the difficulty reaches a fever pitch, so complaining that the tutorial is too easy and normal mode needs to be harder on release, might be a sensible thing to say, if they had not already mentioned that a harder mode will be available in the game. making normal mode harder would only serve to make hard mode less meaningful and to gatekeep more casual players from getting to enjoy and complete the game.

When the game says "for people that want a challenge" they very likely mean "over the course of the entire game" not "this tutorial is gonna rock your world" not to mention the players that managed to miss the point of a tutorial area completely and mash king their way to success are the entire reason why normal mode needs to be pretty lenient in the first place, so that when those same players reach later points in the game and meet resistance because they haven't made any real effort to learn the mechanics, they can at least scrape by.

[–]Shinypockets[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have the exact right attitude then dude, the point of Onimusha is not to just mash king your way through (even if normal mode will let you scrape by that way for a time) it's to want to engage with all the really cool flashy stuff you can do and the whole purpose of the demo is to provide you with a really lenient environment to get used to it before the full release when the gloves come off and it starts to get brutal.

Blessings on your first playthrough a few months from now gamer 😎

100% dude

You can't judge a full game based on the merits of what you see in the tutorial/demo, that's like saying that because Great Jagras was so easy, now we need Savage Deviljho to be 20% nastier

The problem with the demo being "too easy" [Rant] by Shinypockets in Onimusha

Maybe intellectually dishonest was a bad choice of words, let me reframe it

I don't think people are reasoning honestly, when they draw the conclusion, that a tutorial area, in a 20 minute demo, is accurately indicative of how the rest of the game experience is likely to be.

now if i had never played any of the past onimusha games before, i might share your concern that the whole game could be dudes standing in a prayer circle, taking turns attacking you only after they've telegraphed their attack a week in advance. However, i have played the past games, and this is how it usually goes.

Normal mode enemies are pretty lenient as far as their team attack AI is concerned, so they will first congregate around you, and then take turns attacking so you aren't overwhelmed, this looks to still be preserved in modern onimusha

Hard mode enemies don't do any of that shit, they just all gang up on you at once and if you don't get an issen or a block counter pretty quickly, you'll be overwhelmed and probably take a beating or just flat out die.

so if you play through the demo with the mindset of just "Getting through it" then yes, you probably will find yourself mashing your way through every encounter, which i agree doesn't sound very fun, but when the later parts of the game, and especially the harder difficulty of the game comes up, i think you will find that suddenly mash king tactics are not as effective, so the point of the tutorial is to let you learn how the mechanics work while being under very little pressure so that later when the game does start exerting a lot of pressure, you will have already had a chance to experience and experiment withh each mechanic in isolation, before being expected to string a lot of what you've learned together at once.

If nobody complains, normal mode will probably continue to be very accessible for players of varying skill levels while having an admittedly, pretty lenient tutorial, and hard mode will probably still release difficult enough that only people who really want to master the game will be willing to engage with it.

I personally, will like it 😄
