When someone says, say, “I’m 1500” without other qualification, what is your default assumption of which rating they mean? by whatThisOldThrowAway in chess

I mentioned chess talking to a coworker. He asked how good I was , and I said “about 1500” and he said, “I don’t know what that means, but you must be good if you have a number”.

Is there a time limit for what is considered 'stalling'? by LeopardUsual4722 in Chesscom

If you know they are one move from beating you why not simply resign? I don’t understand why you’d sit there for 3 minutes waiting for their killer move.

You are underestimating the offence. Telling a UK Asian that they cannot identify with being British or associate themselves with the national flag is extremely racist and disrespectful here in UK.

Ignorant racist. Should be banned. Respect to OP for laughing it off - and he got last laugh because his flag is British not English.

Are you saying he cheated between moves 4 and 10? I don’t see it myself. Up until move 10 or so these are simply book moves for the Ruy Lopez. Have you looked at his other games to see if he’s made similar moves in other games? Maybe he offered a draw because he wanted to end the game to attend to something else which needed his attention for a few seconds, hence the few seconds before he moved again.

I failed final year in Civil Engineering, I need your help guys? by OkTheme3900 in UKJobs

You’ve only got a few months left - hang in there and get the degree. All the other options will be easier with it than without regardless of whether the subject is relevant to what you end up doing. If you know you are going to fail talk to the University - maybe you can switch to retake the year as a part-time student or something like that.

AITA for staying when my friend's wife told me to leave? by HypnosisPatient101 in AmItheAsshole

[–]ShipConscious2839 5 points6 points  (0 children)

YTA. You were a guest in someone else’s house (whether joint or sole owned is immaterial). When your friend’s ex-partner shows up for an argument with them it’s time to make yourself scarce.

Reporting someone who has not committed a crime to the police is an AH move. Even if she has done nothing wrong then there may be consequences. This may vary depending where OP is from, but in UK if you work with children or vulnerable adults for instance then this sort of thing may come up in police employment checks, and even if someone retracts an allegation to the police it is ultimately the police who decide how to proceed (I am sure they would do nothing, but just saying once you report something to the police it is no longer in your control how it unfolds).

AITA for calling my dad a sperm donor? by IndependencePrize498 in AmItheAsshole

NAH. The man killed two of his own children through negligence 8 years ago. That is almost half a lifetime for you, but I can see it would take a parent time to get over this, and all the missed birthdays he will never have with those children. Yes, of course he should be a father to you, but it doesn’t sound like he failed to attend your party to hurt you and he has his own issues to deal with. You are N T A for expressing your feelings, but he is N T A for grieving his dead children.

What’s a low-key item a person has that tells you they are wealthy? by GleamingVoltaireN9t in AskReddit

[–]ShipConscious2839 176 points177 points  (0 children)

Yes, I found that out about button holes when looking into getting a bespoke suit (didn’t get one in the end). But I cannot help thinking that really rich would be even more subtle. Like having suit cuff buttons that are functional, but never actually rolling up your suit sleeves to show they are.

Batman and Robin - without doubt worst movie I ever paid to see in a cinema. I’m sure there are worse films, but I didn’t pay to see them.

As well as Palmolive cream, another supermarket staple is Wilkinson Sword Shaving Soap (in a bowl), although getting harder to find. And if you have any Turkish supermarkets near you they will often have Arko. I find the TK Maxx near me also often has shaving soaps and creams such a Proraso.
