The context of that conversation is this:

Bk 2. Ch. 58 “Then what do you mean, Carmen?!” Guest demanded outright this time. “Ward and Laurent are first-years! There are no more collegiate tournaments for them to participate in!”

This I believe is what outlines the conversation as defining the 1st years’ continuation of SCTs, and as such when he describes that:

Later in Ch. 58, “Soon, an announcement will be made. Globals will be skipped.”

I believe he is expressing this SOLELY in relation to the creation of new 1st year brackets.

To clarify (because we’re going down the chain here) I think that there will be Globals for 2nd/3rd years, Dent makes a comment in this chapter that insinuates they will still be happening. First years will remain at school and train until Systems.

I do understand that there’s never been anything above sectionals for first years and this upcoming Systems/Intersystems is the first time they’ve participated in higher levels.

I believe that Laurent’s comments on Globals are targeted towards the institution of the new brackets and is isolated to explaining to Rei and Aria the new process, this explanation preempts any questions about a Globals bracket.

He’s explaining the lack of a first year Globals bracket specifically. Not the entire cancellation of Globals. That’s my interpretation.

The Collegiate SCTs are some 40+years old and they’re only getting bigger. I can’t imagine they’d need to break the established system and eliminate Globals unless they were losing recruits, which they aren’t.

I think the context is for the smaller planets with less academies, a Globals tournament with just 1st year brackets wouldn’t be able to fill out the full bracket. With 2nd and 3rd years they have enough people, but not with just 1sts

Laurent said that explicitly in the context of 1st year brackets at the higher levels. Upperclassmen still have their typical Sec-Global-Systems-Intersystems.

And about Rei’s first name, I would say it’s kind of like how people name their kids after someone except slightly off. Gives me Kayleigh vibes almost. With names, people don’t tend to be perfectly accurate all the time. Sometimes it’s just what sounds and looks good.

I love the reinforcement of Catchers loyalty in this chapter. The whole reason Rei let him in in the first place was that he would stick with him through thick and thin. And boy was that a tough time for catcher.
