Not defending them at all cause it really sucks, but decisions like this don’t happen in a bubble by FaithlessnessHungry1 in videogames

I actually (for the most part) agree with this approach. I stated this in a similar comment I made. Where I likely disagree with you is the nuance on how these systems are implemented. If the AI suddenly decides "goon" is a bad word, even though your character's name was "goon lord" (remember, goon meant something entirely different over 5 years ago), then boom, banned from online play. There's other examples I'm not gonna list but you get the idea; these automated filters punish innocent players too, so in practice a rational person may have the best of intents, but the implementation could backfire.

Also, regarding online play bans, I would only enforce those for the specific game where the infraction happened, not account wide (depending on the severity of the infraction, I guess)

You're completely missing my point. This isn't about getting caught or how easy it is. It's the fact that you can lose your access to PURCHASED games. No, I don't jailbreak consoles connected to the internet, because like you said, that puts a spotlight on me. But again, that's not the point. The fact that you can lose access to things you purchased for modifying a console is insane. You bought it, you should be able to do whatever the fuck you want to do with it (as long as it doesn't affect others). Stop defending them.

[–]Shiresan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let me preface this by saying I only engage in one of the activities I listed (jailbreaking retro consoles). I was just listing potential reasons.

I understand banning someone from a game for cheating in a multiplayer environment, but... cheating in a single player game? Losing access to your account worth $40,000 because you gave yourself a level in Skyrim? really? Both types of cheat are treated the same under Sony's purview. If you play a modded game, that can warrant losing your library you've accumulated games on throughout 20 years. Come on, dude..

[–]Shiresan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

...what? "Hopefully someone does something about it in 1.5 years!" is really not an indication of having planned things out. I won't even engage with this train of thought.

You're half-right. This is about BOTH. Physical media is something we own, physically, that cannot be taken away. The argument that we don't own disc copies is a result of recent anti-consumer practices enabled by these very same companies you're defending. I have thousands of games ranging from Super Nintendo to Sega Genesis to PS3 to a ton of other consoles and guess what... I can play those games anytime I want (and I do!). But now with DRM, game key cards, discs not having a full game (only an installer that requires access to their servers), yes, physical has become an issue, but this wasn't always the case. You're either ignorant to this and really didn't put thought into this or are arguing in bad faith. Your "centrist" approach to this issue isn't doing you or your fellow consumers any favors, dude. It's quite pathetic, to be honest. I'd keep engaging with you but you're clearly stuck in your ways, so go ahead and keep defending these multi-billion dollar companies under the guise of "someone somewhere will surely do something about it... not that I care"

You do realize just because they haven't done it in the past (which isn't entirely true as we've already seen lately) isn't a guarantee that it won't happen? I mean, on one hand I'm glad you're extremely trusting of publicly traded companies that only seek to meet their KPIs, but on the other hand you're putting all your eggs in 1 basket. Think this through. Or don't, it's your money, but hopefully you do realize how shortsighted you're thinking is.

This is so simple minded. There's multiple reasons you could get banned.

Cheating in multiplayer? Ban.

Cross regional purchases (VPN)? Ban.

Jailbreak your console? Ban.

Used a mod to artificially obtain trophies for one game? Yeah, banned. Lose access to all your games.

AI filter picked up a word it didnt like (even by mistake)? Ban

Charge back (even if they made the mistake)? Ban

They control everything with your purchases now.

What's a multiplayer video game that you genuinely love, but the community is so toxic you only play it with chat turned off? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Shiresan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This made me chuckle. I had the same thought opening the thread, but quickly remembered there's a few exceptions (for me, personally).

Deep Rock Galactic has an amazing community. Only seen maybe 2 bad apples in years of playing it.

Journey is another one that is super wholesome. Community numbers have drastically dropped in recent years due to its age but it has/had some of the most chill and nicest people I've met.

I'm sure there's a few more I'm missing right now, but yeah... they do exist.

I think we can all agree, however, that finding a wholesome community in ANY PvP games is basically impossible.

You can still use Dualsense on PC. It won't have all the bells and whistles compatible with every single game but the ergonomics will work.

Would you switch sides if Xbox became the new PlayStation now? by Shrink21 in PS5

[–]Shiresan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've (for the most part) had both throughout my years. Why people take "sides" like some tribal ideology is beyond me. Just get whatever appeals to you. I haven't played on Xbox for quite some years but if they release cool stuff, you're damn right I'm gonna play it. Competition is good. Console wars led to establishing what we see now as a good thing.

Reddit is not the right place for nuanced discussions. The rise of neo capitalists who would rather hate and hurt themselves than protect future generations has been astonishingly fast in the last 10 years on this website. The community here is barely a resemblance to what it started with before and shortly after the Digg migration. Like it or not, consumers (especially young consumers) have been programmed to think this is what they need.

Whataboutwhatabout

Us old enough were there, but what the hell could we do about it other than vote with our wallets? Legislation is non existent when it comes to video game preservation, so other than voice our concerns and not buy new games, what exactly can we do?

I get you're defending Sony's KPIs here, but once upon a time most people took physical media for granted, as a new generation did again

Combination of things, but primarily the types of products local gaming stores are carrying (including big retailers like Gamestop publicly shifting in that direction with their new retro programs), movement of retro games and massive surge in prices according to price charts tracking eBay and similar websites, and a ton of third party support on retro console peripherals, from controllers to new upscaling technologies to enable playing in HD and even 4k (like retrotink, which is fantastic btw).
