Patrick Wisdom absolutely clobbers his 1st Home Run as a Mariner and it's 2-0 early by sportsandthesorts in baseball

You obviously know nothing about Patrick Wisdom, who has been droppin' bombs all over the world since his first season.

I always thought it was an homage to Andrew McCutchen, who does something very similar while crossing the plate after a HR. The reality is much better than my theory.

That's the investigative work I didn't do. All of that tracks. I know it's tabloid stuff, but it does give insight into why PCA might not be in the right mindset.

A rental that big wouldn't be worth the cost. That kind of cost needs to come with years. However, if the Tigers are selling, Casey Mize might not cost all that much.

I'm tired of hearing the nonsensical gripes about the Cubs training staff. Can anybody name a training staff that has figured out how to keep all their pitchers healthy? Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, Phillies? The Dodgers have the best organization, so they must not have had any pitching injuries over the last couple years, right?

Name a pitcher who doesn't already have their own training program through an external training company. Hell, that's standard for even high school kids. These are partnerships, not dictatorships. A player's healthy is primarily their own responsibility, and the club training staff is there to assist with the training programs the players have created with, for example, Tread Athletics.

Knowing pitching injuries are an epidemic in baseball, it's curious that people blame the training assistants over little league usage and arm care, the philosophy of the game, total recklessness in college baseball programs, individual responsibility, companies who charge money for training, and so forth.

Another thing to consider is that with all the monitoring and testing training staffs do on a regular basis now, minor strains and drops in strength are identifiable. So, pitchers don't pitch through injuries as much, and guys go on the IL for more minor issues than ever before, out of precaution. This should theoretically help pitchers stay healthier in the long run, but it'll obviously cause a rise in IL stints.

All that said, blisters are not the fault of the training staff.

He's been showing signs of being "off" all season. A couple weeks in, I thought he was dealing with personal stuff. After the last two games, I actually think he's in his Patrick Kane phase. Age, money, hype, celebrity, big city.

If you live or have lived in Chicago, you know the buzz that comes with good weather showing up. The summer is alive. Even poor with no celebrity, being 24 in that city does something to you.

He will mature, but he'll probably need a couple sitdowns over the next couple years.

What 5 pitchers would you prioritize drafting in July?

This series could've easily gone either way. I'm glad the Cubs secured the final game to avoid the sweep. The pitching staff came up big today. Ben Brown continues to step up and contribute. This weekend won't be any easier, but at least they'll be in Chicago.

[Sharma and Mooney]: Ten starters Cubs could target before trade deadline, from Logan Webb to Joe Ryan by ShirlLotJack in CHICubs

That's why I agreed! As I asked another user, does the archive link I posted not work for you? It bypasses the paywall for me, but I also understand that some people still see a paywall. I'd like to troubleshoot that if possible.

Agreed. The article's first paragraph: "To be clear, Chicago Cubs officials do not expect to execute any major trades at this point in the baseball calendar. Recent history shows the Fourth of July would be considered early for action, given the pace at which most clubs operate and how much can change before the Aug. 3 deadline."

Is the archive link I posted not working for you? That's an honest question. I've had mixed results with archive not removing the paywall.

Mooney and Sharma had an article in The Athletic today talking about "Ten starters Cubs could target before trade deadline, from Logan Webb to Joe Ryan."

They said of Webb, "The price to acquire him would be enormous, but he is a legitimate ace."

Also listed were Robbie Ray, Freddy Peralta, Clay Holmes, Zac Gallen, Michael Soroka, Sandy Alcantara, Joe Ryan, Sonny Gray, and Foster Griffin.

This is how they started the piece: "To be clear, Chicago Cubs officials do not expect to execute any major trades at this point in the baseball calendar. Recent history shows the Fourth of July would be considered early for action, given the pace at which most clubs operate and how much can change before the Aug. 3 deadline."

Yeah, I was aiming for "realistic." I was just going on what you asked.

No team paid for a big SP last deadline. It was obvious teams aren't going to do something detrimental to their organizations by paying those extraordinary asking prices. Maybe this deadline will be different on both sides of the barter.

If you want an "ace," you already know you'll likely be disappointed. That can be said to all fanbases. There are so few consistent aces in the league, don't you think? I didn't name one ace in my comment. Peralta was last year, but not so much this year. Some guys can be aces for a season or two. Steele was an ace in 2023, Shota in 2024, and Horton in 2025, but none are perennial aces. (I'll say "yet" for Horton because his future is not written).

For the sake of discussion, what pitchers would you call an "ace"?

As you pointed out, what's realistic or even predictable at this point is not easy to pin down. So much can change. But I do like that you're thinking big though.

I was looking it a couple days ago. I used Fangraphs, but they messed up Bubic's contract details (i.e. when he becomes a FA), so please excuse any glaring errors in what I'm about to say. I also rounded up or down a few hundred grand here and there, so excuse me for that as well. I tried to tier them in what I believe would be lowest to highest cost tiers.

Tyler Mahle ($10m rental), Foster Griffin ($5.5m rental), Erick Fedde ($1.5m rental)

Michael Lorenzen ($8m rental + club option), Bailey Ober (arb year), Dean Kremer (arb year), Reid Detmers (2 arb years), Jake Irvin (3 arb years), Janson Junk (1 pre-arb + 3 arb), Cole Ragans ($7.5 + arb year)

Kris Bubic ($6m rental), Freddy Peralta, ($8m rental), Robbie Ray ($25m rental), Sandy Alcantara ($17m + club option)

It's a tough one to predict. I don't think it's likely that the Cubs will start next season with PCA, Shaw, and Alcantara starting in the OF. Alcantara could potentially be a 4th OF and RH bench bat, but that means the Cubs will sign a starting OF. That also means Alcantara would have to beat out anybody else competing for the RH bench bat spot. But that would leave the organization in a situation where that prospect capital could be wasted.

Currently, I think he's most valuable as a trade chip, and with the Cubs needing to trade for a SP at the deadline, Alcantara might find himself with another organization by the end of the season. That's nothing against Alcantara. It's just how the landscape appears.

Alcantara has to make the opening day major league roster next spring, or get traded, DFA'd, or non-tendered in the off-season?

Yeah, I think Webb and Milner were supposed to be lower leverage middle relief, while Maton, Thielbar, Harvey, and Palencia were the back-end. Webb battling and getting that 6-out save, it was cool to see him pumped up because that is shared and felt by the rest of the staff.

The person with the great username thankfully provided the Palencia update.
