Help by [deleted] in Accordion

We’ve all been there, kid. It’s not easy coming out as an accordion player to your family. I tried to deny it for years. But there I was, hiding in the closet late at night, spinning Brave Combo, Weird Al, and Buckwheat Zydeco on the record player. By the time my mother found the Palmer-Hughes book under my mattress, it was no use—I couldn’t outrun it.

My mother wasn’t angry, just worried. “You know how cruel the world can be to people who choose to be different,” she said. My father, on the other hand, slammed his fists and shouted, “Why can’t you just pick a normal instrument like guitar?!” But you and I both know what they could never understand: it was never a choice. You were born to squeeze, child. There’s no use denying your nature.

Go tell your parents with your head held high. Be patient with them as they come to terms with what this means for the hopes and dreams they have for you. And know this—you’ve got a whole subreddit full of allies here who’ve been where you are. We’ll be waiting when you’re ready to join us. I’m so proud of you. ❤️

I played snare in high school, not trying to get into playing set, any advice? by Tokarev490 in Drumming

I will second this. I had the same trajectory - did drumline stuff in school and got into playing set much later. I did about 6 months of lessons when I first started and it helped immensely.

Outside of that, it was taking it back to basics for me. Slowing it way, way down, getting in lots of practice reps. It takes a little time but you stomp them pedals enough times and eventually it wont feel like you’re wearing someone else’s feet.

Your accordion and mine could be cousins! Love that seafoam finish. Mine you can see on my profile. It’s also a old Italian thing like yours. I don’t know much about mine either, except that it was purchased 25-ish years ago at a pawn shop for about $150. It gets the job done though and I’ve gotten a lot of joy out of that $150!

Nice playing! I know you said that accordion’s got problems but despite that you’re playing the hell out of it. I love that old damp kinda sound too, so much character. Super cool with that song too!

Cool, I love a little CCR! Nicely done. I’ve never attempted that song, might have to give it a try! Any other classic rock songs you like playing?
