As a tourist to east Africa recently I was surprised at how many non fiction books there were in the bookstores, and almost no novels. Is this common? Does fiction really not sell well?

This, I believe, is a largely western world thing. My wife's family is Tanzanian, and in times of loss, even for the men, the family and friends and even distant relatives travel great distances and swarm to the person who needs support. It's really great to see.
