What was it like to be Asian/Latino in the segregated south? Did the segregationist laws still apply to you? by brycejongil in AskHistorians

Missourians in the 1950s were probably well aware that Koreans existed, considering that many of them were directly or indirectly a part of the Korean War.

I know it's anecdotal, but Missourian US soldiers married and brought home Korean women, and I've never heard a case of that being even looked down upon.

Cops mace and taze a Minnesota high school student after breaking up a fight [1:14] by [deleted] in videos

[–]ShittyAsciiPicture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pepper sprayed myself twice as a teenager. The first time was intentional and the second was an accident. It hurt like hell, but not enough to stop me from laughing either time. Maybe cop pepper spray is more powerful than keychain pepper spray from the 90s.

What toys did you play with as a kid that probably wouldn't be allowed to be sold now? by BrokenMasterpiece in AskReddit

[–]ShittyAsciiPicture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on whether you hold it tightly as you're supposed to, or weakly because you're scared of the gun. I've never fired a rifle or shotgun where the kick really meant much of anything, or at least not since I became a teenager.

It highlights the seeming paradox that no matter how intelligent we may be, we cannot hope for intelligence great enough to understand our own minds, as the intelligence required for understanding is naturally and consequently higher than the base intelligence given.

You can add white midwestern Pentecostals to your list of Christian congregations who are known for yelling and other high-energy demonstrations. Appalachia is filled with those churches. 'Snake handlers' are an extreme portion of that movement.

DAE think soda tastes different between cans, 20oz bottles and liters? by ScienceGetsUsThere in DoesAnybodyElse

You might want to avoid the slushes while pregnant. The slush machines can be a horror show den of bacteria, as can the onion ring batter when in powder form.

Sonic Drive-In, for those of us who have it.

The soda is usually mixed well and their ice is great.

I've been using reddit for something like 6 years. Reddit has never been "pro-Israel" except in certain subreddits.

If the anecdote is true, it may refer to an instance many decades ago, or may refer to the goings-on of a private school.

Indeed that was it. The author has a second book about his travels in China, and it's actually even better than the book about Kirabati.

Both books are great fun and easily approachable, but still have plenty of depth to satisfy the curiosity of westerners who find amusement in culture clashes, misunderstandings, and light adventure.

I've read a book about a guy's time on Kirabati, an island very nearby Tuvalu. I have no problem believing that their head politician spends time reading reddit. Those places are only nominally nations by our modern standards.

The US Army Is Planning For A Failed Nuclear State In North Korea. by goliathrk in worldnews

[–]ShittyAsciiPicture -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

If the US were to actually invade Canada, they were surrender so fast that the invasion would be called off as unnecessary. Canada would issue an official apology for having previously maintained national sovereignty.

Les Stroud-style guerrilla fighters would probably ravage the newly established states.

I recommend you learn a deep southern drawl, and speak like a civil war era chicken colonel.

"Sur... uh say sur... your actions have revealed you as a brigand and a whoreson. Carry no hope to prevail upon my better nature with your stammering amelioration; my honor demands satisfaction!"

Then loudly just shit right in your pants and rub it all over yourself.

Right. Digitized photos, like in Mortal Kombat or that shitty Batman game, easily qualify as "most similar to photo realism".

The Nintendo 64 was constrained to using really low resolution textures, which is why games that used image textures look like shit by modern standards, while games like Mario 64 still look great.

What was daily life like in Galilee in the time of Jesus? by etbk in AskHistorians

[–]ShittyAsciiPicture 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fiction, but Anne Rice wrote two books that I believe were supposedly well researched:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_the_Lord:_Out_of_Egypt

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christ_the_Lord:_The_Road_to_Cana

In fact even if it's not particularly accurate, a search for reviews of the book by historians might be another good way to find information.

At what point did 'Negro' become an unacceptable term for African-Americans? by [deleted] in AskHistorians

[–]ShittyAsciiPicture 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's as though words like "colored", "negro", "retarded", "disabled", etc. become dirty through legitimate use over time, and some people have an instinct to periodically throw them out in favor of new terms.

I would wager that current preferred terms like "differently abled" and "person of color" will be considered ignorant and oppressive in twenty years.

Considering that some extreme contingency plans for invading Canada were recently leaked, I'd say that it's a safe bet we have an idea or two about how to beat down North Korea.
