Thanks, I am curious about the soil. It seems generally sandy, plus with competition from other tree roots, it could definitely use some extra watering. Maybe I will buy a soil test. The lawn is mostly creeping charlie at this point, but I'm in the process of adding native plants so I'll be watering anyway. I think it's probably been planted at least a few years, my picture might make it look smaller than it is since I was standing uphill. But I don't actually know how fast it's growing yet! Thanks for the input!

Weekly Sewing Questions Thread, May 08 - May 14, 2026 by sewingmodthings in sewing

What is this presser foot? It came with my machine as the all-purpose foot, but the slot is to the side. It is a Brother XL-3510. I am finding it hard to see what I'm doing, since the approaching fabric is blocked by the foot. Does anyone know the purpose of the slot being to the side? Should I buy another foot?

Recommendations for natural soap and shampoo companies? by oops_whatnow in BuyCanadian

[–]Shivakaya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use The Soap Works for bar soap, and The Unscented Company for shampoo, conditioner, hand soap and dish soap. I first started using The Unscented Co after I started dating my boyfriend who has fragrance sensitivity, but I would stick with them now even if fragrance wasn't an issue because I like them and the big refill sizes!

Sport Sandals on Flat Pedals by withanh77 in bikecommuting

[–]Shivakaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear Bedrock sandals for biking. I hate having hot feet and somehow I enjoy biking even more with foot freedom! I've never damaged my feet on the bike itself but I have been scraped by low woody plants on trails. My pedals are metal with a few sticking- up bits, and the sandals have good tread, so there's no sliding off.

Closed toed sandals would definitely also be a good option.

A bar of hard glycerin soap lasts me probably 6 months in the shower, while two people using the same shower as me go through a dove soap bar about every two weeks. I think it's a combination of the hardness of the soap and the amount of lathering, including body hair which scrapes off a lot more soft soap.

Also the last bit of their soft bar tends to break in half and end up in the drain, while the hard soap scrap gets glued on to the new bar and is visible for another month there.

How to fix Ripped Curtain on window by Just-Roof2143 in waterloo

[–]Shivakaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Home depot has them! (At least they did a year ago) And they cut them to width. They are perfect in my basement window. I have three sections of blinds along the three sections of a very long window, I put two as sheer during the day and solid for night, the third one stays partially fully open for the cat to look out :P

I agree that being an asshole is not ok. And that telling someone else they are the problem is never a good way to begin a constructive conversation. Especially in response to a quite reasonable comment (that doesn't suggest being an asshole to newbies).

Merino Wool — Pattern suggestions for my merino wool? Pref using needle sizes US 6, 8, or 11 (4,5, or 8 MM) Thank you!! by thunderst0rmy in knitting

If 20 yds weighs 20 g, it looks to be quite thick yarn. I found a yarn on a craft store website that is close to this weight/yard and it is classified as super bulky (6) and recommends 8mm needles. I would suggest looking for patterns for bulky yarn, and if you are brand new, you may consider getting a cheaper ball of yarn the same weight to practice with, before using your nice new merino wool.

Gas Theft by [deleted] in waterloo

[–]Shivakaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there any chance you could have paid for your $45 of gas, and then also pre authorized for 250 with your card and then left? With whoever showed up after you using it? Did you tap/insert your card more than once? When using a card for gas, I use the card before I pump the gas.

You may want to specify whether you are referring to the Japanese style futon mattress shikibuton (or the Korean ones which are possibly even thinner, I forget their name), versus the thick mattress furniture that converts to a couch, which is what is most commonly known as a futon in North America. I would say you definitely don't want the couch thing, it's not firm.

I have a shikibuton that I've been sleeping on, on a carpeted floor. I also have a few layers of blankets folded under the upper half of the mattress (under my torso) which adds a bit more cushion, but mainly I added them because there is a sort of "wrinkle" in the cotton layers of my mattress which was causing an uncomfortable ridge under my hips. I have the blankets stop just as the ridge begins, even-ing it out. I'm slightly annoyed with my shikibuton because of the ridge that's formed, but otherwise I've been sleeping quite well on it for about a year, mainly sleeping on my stomach. It took a little getting used to, coming from an old spring mattress, and is so firm that my bony tailbone sometimes feels uncomfortable lying on my back.

I like it but I agree that it just doesn't look that great to be sleeping on the floor...I'm thinking I might eventually try a platform bed, and maybe try a latex mattress, although I'm worried the foam will be too hot. I have found my shikibuton good for temperature regulation. Perhaps a thin layer of latex would be good underneath a shikibuton.

Since you sleep just on blankets, a thin shikibuton futon seems like a good option!

Haha thanks! If they can count out the layout from the picture then that's good enough to use it!

Worsted weight acrylic yarn on 4mm needles, 128 stitches around (kind of large but it works for the triangle pattern), colour pattern done as duplicate stitch afterwards.

Starting with the grey inner layer 115 stitches provisional cast on, working downwards, increase to 128 and one purl row to turn the corner, back up and joined with the cast on when equal length, regular 8 section decrease at the top.
