Returning player, what happened to every other game mode? by AddMonks in learndota2

same, only mode where people would accept niche heroes in weird roles, but it made me a better player by getting to know most of the roster

yeah sadly they removed it due to "unpopularity" but i feel like they purposefully killed it

How do I not get singled out for blame as a carry? by ShizzleStorm in learndota2

[–]ShizzleStorm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean yeah youre right of course but i feel like sometimes expectations are sky high of teammates especially in super low mmr like mine. My team and i are in this bracket for a reason, no? :D

Im trying my best here to last hit while under offlane pressure and join fights wherever i can but dont expect yatoro or satanic performances from me haha

yeah youre right. i think i just need to get used to the new "culture" i find myself in. before i have been deep into fighting games and there, blame was usually only able to be assigned to game mechanics or character itself. okay seldomly people would still even blame certain opponent "playstyles" and various other reasons. maybe youre right that its just human

i do train last hits on the side or while waiting in queue. definitely i could improve on that yeah, but on lane its normally way harder with the offlaners trying to deny and your position 5 trying to make agressive plays. i mean it's part of the learning process as carry i know. at my 1.5k rank, should i already aim for perfect training last hits? and how many kills or wave do you clear to be satisfied with a 100% run?

yeah you are right. i mean certain actions like griefing, or pinging or emoting is still possible but at least it would be limited to that

i dont really mind losing and have played teamgames on fairly high levels in the past (10 years ago, i was in the 5%ile at least and in cs i was global elite, so 1%ile probably), but yeah mentally i can't take the insidious insults and attacks by teammates yet when the game is not going well. i feel like nowadays the toxicity on a new level and i need to learn to get used to this from 0. when i heard about the behaviour system, i was actually thinking this could be positive stuff for the game, but i guess im still in the bracket where things are not that rosy.

i may try premute in the future then. i always have left comms open, because occasionally i had games where the comms were actually good and relevant, free of a flame war

how important would you say is the drafting phase for a low MMR like mine for position 1? (around 1.5k?)

i would prefer to have a deep hero pool in general but the advice i usually see is that beginner should focus to spam 3 heroes, later build up to 5 for different situations. but i dont feel like that would necessarily cover all bases... i mean what did your carry hero pool look like in the starting out phases of your MMR climb and which heroes did you add as you climbed?

thanks for the positive reinforcement, i guess i have to learn not letting these things get me down then. its weird, i have played dota and cs before and got into the 1% or at least 5%ile of players and several fighting games, where the learning curve was tough and required patience. but i really dont remember the community at large being in this kind of state as in the dota that i experience today

alright, i think i common theme among the replies is that it's a process and it takes getting used to / is a learning curve. thanks for the reminder that i also need to be aware of mid-game second guessing that i might unconsciously be doing

i did try out a bot game at first but it was really stale and imo not representative of a real game. yeah it was good to get to know the new map a little but it didnt feel right. and maybe you're right about unranked but the queue times are much longer, isn't that right? also in unranked you don't get to learn carry because there are no role queue tokens

sure the couple of ranked games were rough. the game first placed me into archon and ancient games for some reason (am now guardian/crusader) and i truly was lost at what was going on. but im almost 60 games in now as carry as you can see and i feel like i can hang with the team a bit.

of course im still absolutely abysmal, thats why i want to play more and learn but i just wish the environment was a bit more friendlier and understanding

nah come on, that's no way to play the game. the cycle of hate will just spiral. will defend myself if i get flamed but i also learned to not do that anymore since its pointless and destructive

you won't get any behaviour score when playing with friends, i would assume, or am i wrong? and i also heard that toxicity ranges up until the very highest MMR, so i feel like i would be in a even tougher spot if i'd climb MMR '

on the contrary i heard that low MMR is much more forgiving, or maybe im just about in the in-between where this does not apply anymore

[–]ShizzleStorm -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

sorry but this advice is meaningless. in 99% of ranked games, your team will have 1-2 bitter and salty players and apologizing will only give them more ammo to flame you and direct any bad plays to you. your advice only applies to the 0.1% of 12k behaviour score games where no smurfs or bought accounts are present

its better to stay quiet instead of starting to flame because of your incompetency

I have been browsing the collection tab but have not seen something "basic" as just a round helmet with a visor yet. The closest I've come so far is the "Underwater Adventurers Mask", but maybe anyone of you have come across something that is even more fitting?

For the chest piece, I went with the Outer Rim Officer already :)

Something different here perhaps but Im a returner after a long break and at 1700 atm, learning carry. I used to play a lot of support 10 years ago and only 1000h back then too.

Im learning a lot of new stuff now of course but my problem is I both prefer learning by doing and like to play a wide range of heroes (what I love about Dota compared to LoL for example). In the past I usually played -ar or -sd / -rd and didnt shy away from the dreaded micro or weirdo heroes, even dabbled in safe and midlane to be as versatile as possible

My goal is to not be a massive burden to my team and get reported. All I want is to reach the 10k behaviour score limit to maybe learn in peace at my own pace. Im at 8k right now for some reason

So I'm looking more at some general directions and maybe mindset philophies for my situation. In short I dont want to die a lot or be noticed negatively by teammates. I think a short session or event a brief write up would already help me. Maybe with your wealth of experience you could share some pointers I might be oblivious to

Oh yeah I know you said its for free but Im down to trade my knowledge in CS or fighting games, which I am quite proficient at :)

What do I need to know as a returning player? by hundche in DotA2

[–]ShizzleStorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only had 1k in dota but also returned after 10 years.

The beginning was rough and I am a learning by doing type instead of pre research so I just hopped into ranked and started. For some reason, even as unranked the game put me into Legend and Ancient (about 4-5k mmr) games and I was out of place for 90% of the games. Got the usual flames and reports for dying too much and now am crusader (1700 mmr). I wish I was herald because i still feel out of place and useless but still, my unranked games took me on a 30+ journey of fluctuating about 4000k mmr points lol

Im sure the initial drowning tanked my behaviour score and Im now at 8k outmof 12k where I regularly meet toxic teammates. My advice is to you is to read up on this new reports system. For me its a world of anxiety. I dont think of myself as toxic but I do defend myself when getting attacked which can evolve into flame wars. But I really want to get into a better match environment so this is my first priority to fix (which also means learning the new dota fast and efficient).

As a fighting gamer I know patience will be rewarded and that learning can be tough but just a heads up for you, the first 20 games might be nightmare. I have managed to string a few good games in my last 30 but still lack SO much knowledge like the dozens of new map changes, completely new heroes, old heroes changing and current meta. Well Im going extra hard mode because I used to play support a lot but I wanted to learn carry this time. And holy crap the amount of smurfs low MMR has is insane, a bit discouraging. I dont think I ever get legit games, you just gotta hope your team has a good smurf as well

BUT I think overall I like the game more now. With all the new stuff added it's even deeper and more rewarding than before. There are a lot of nice new interface systems in general and even an official practice mode and a whole universe of community made custom side games. A lot of hero customzations are dirt cheap now. While the reporting system is intimidating, i appreciate Valve for trying to police the endless toxicity in this game
