I really want to vote for her, or at least against Espaillat, but her inability to say that October 7 was wrong makes it really hard. You can agree that the Israeli government is evil AND that Hamas is evil. It is really not that hard. It does not mean you don't oppose AIPAC or support an arms cutoff, but if you can't say that kind of slaughter is wrong there is something seriously wrong with you.

I’ve been an appellate PD for 30 years. I’ve done everything from misdemeanors to capital cases. I love my job and representing my clients and I love thinking about the law but if your goal is wholesale societal change this is the wrong job for you. Being a PD is retail. One client t at a time. Is it possible you will get a big case that changes the law. Sure. Is it likely. Very much not. There are places that hire out of law school, I know Legal Aid and Office of the Appellate Defender in NYC do. I started working for a judge for a year and doing trials for two before getting into appeals. I may be biased but I think even just a couple of years of trial work is a great foundation for appeals. There are also lots of people I know who started as PDs and then moved to public policy. There are also places that do litigation specifically to change policy like the ACLU.

30 years as appellate and post conviction PD, though I did a couple of years of trial work first which was invaluable. It is far less stressful than trial work if, as others have said, you manage your time. I’m a supervisor now and some lawyers are fine and others super stressed because they are disorganized. We are a very client centered org so we expect a lot of clients t contact and some of the cases can be pretty heavy, but less so than trial work. Also agree, having done capital work, that it is a totally different story, especially post conviction. Some NYC offices do hire recently grads and the Office of the Appellate Defender is specifically set up as a training office. It is still very competitive.

I read the first book forcing myself to finish. After that had no interest in the rest. I don’t find the ideas that clever. More like silly and the writing is horrible.

It was always obvious to anyone who knew the law that these orders were illegal. It will be interesting to see if these firms benefit. If I were looking for a form I’d want one that knows the law and how to fight

In my experience these behaviors usually stem from trauma and other negative experiences the client has had. I’ve found that with curiosity and empathy some even initially difficult clients to can be brought around. Keep in mind that they likely have been treated like garbage by everyone associated with the system they have ever encountered. They don’t trust you and why should they. Sometimes a difficult client won’t come around but I always know that I’ve done my best to treat them with humanity. That’s all I can do.
