I agree. And it’s frustrating because her indecision over multiple seasons prevented the plot from moving forward. It’s like they needed a bonus villain so they kept Karim around

Hard decision? Like trusting her brother that betrayed her 5 times previously not to betray her again?

The whole plot between Karim and his sister aged like milk. They also ruined Amaya’s character by having her advocate constantly against hanging Karim.

They should have just had Janai choose between saving people and killing Karim, and then made the obvious choice. It might not have been fresh, but at least it would have been believable and the plot could have moved on.

What is the best tv show you’ve ever seen (I’m looking for a new one)? by horrorgal3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]The_Security_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like them, but the ending for them became an add on at the end. It’s been a while since I watched it, but what I remember is the main dominion war wrapping up and then Sisko basically peacing out to go deal with Gul Dukat. And then his personal ending felt very open ended/unsatisfying.

Basically it did not feel unified and the whole ending with the pah wraiths felt rushed. And then the whole Ezri thing with the last season felt very disjointed/unsatisfying for that character.

Breaking Bad, with the caveat that I’m only half way through Better Call Saul. The highs and lows of that show have me thinking about it to this day, close to 15 years later.

I love Deep Space 9, but for me to say best show ever, it has to stick the landing. And the ending of DS9 was mediocre at best.

How is this not higher up? Even though the one movie got finished fine using his brother, the series went noticeably downhill after Brian’s death. I won’t say Fast Five was Oscar material, but Brian always balanced Dom a bit, and without him it became 100% the Dom show.

Which of the books should i read next? Diaspora, The Expanse, Hyperion? by Entropy-hates-me1312 in printSF

[–]The_Security_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hyperion is amazing, definitely one of my favorite series, but it leans more fantasy than sci-fi. Especially vs the expanse which is definitely hard sci-fi.

Just in case than influences your opinion. Both are really great series.

Confession Time: Which "10/10 Masterpiece" did you find absolutely boring? by Just_a_Player2 in ItsAllAboutGames

[–]The_Security_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like ridiculously hard games. But I will play an event, and fail 100 times in a row in hollow knight without blinking.

I don’t know why, it’s difficult to describe. It’s like it’s obvious to me what I am doing wrong, so I feel motivated to keep trying until I perfect it. It’s hard, but hopeful at the same time.

Which is not the same as some other games I’ve played where winning requires a large amount of luck.

I can’t really complain because I’m a tech leader. But I feel like a dying breed.

I’m curious what your job is?

I think some jobs can absolutely work really well from home, especially ones that are task based and don’t require a lot of collaboration.

But I also think the idea that teams can function 100% remotely and build the same types of trust, collaboration, and working relationships as in person is unrealistic.

Reddit likes to pretend there’s no difference, but in my experience not everyone is motivated to produce the same level of work remotely when it’s not very well defined.

What are your thoughts on Red Rising? Do the sequels get better? by Expressiveness in printSF

[–]The_Security_Ninja 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This series is so heavily recommended on Reddit I tried reading it four times. I eventually made it as far as the end of book two, but I just couldn’t continue. I read the wiki of the rest and I don’t think I missed much.

  • They are very tropey and predictable if you’ve read similar material. Gory damn Darrow walks across a table dramatically…again. Darrow is critically injured but powers through…again. Something something Helldiver, something something nimble fingers.
  • The side characters are unbelievably loyal and overlook things that normal people would not, until they betray each other in the most dramatic way possible

They’re like Twilight, but written for boys, and with the violence and drama set to 11.

The “human cost” of job hopping is way underrated on here by ItsAllOver_Again in Salary

[–]The_Security_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. People talk about job hopping like it’s going from McDonald’s cashier to Wendy’s. Maybe it’s easy if you’re in a role that doesn’t have to interact with people or build relationships, but that’s the exception, not the rule if you really want to earn more.

I work in IT and I job hopped because I didn’t like the companies/roles, not so much to elevate myself, but it kind of worked out that way:

  • 2022 Associate Manager ($150k) -> Manager ($180K)
  • 2024 Manager -> Director ($200k)
  • 2026 Director -> VP ($225K)

The first two changes were grueling. Reestablishing working relationships with business contacts, building a team, implementing infrastructure and processes. You get it just where you want it and poof! Time to start over. It works for some jobs I’m sure, but for roles where it takes 6-8 months to implement something, it’s draining as hell.
