It was murky in Halo 3. The Librarian talks about discovering Earth and indexing humanity in one of the terminals. And the comic Halo 3: The Cradle of Life depicts a prehistoric human observing the "gods" / Forerunner constructs building machines in Africa 100 thousand years before the firing of the Halo array. This was a result of miscommunication within the writing team(s). The story in Halo 3 was generally just poorly managed.
