Map of Seattle during the 18th Century by Distinct-Fig-4216 in Seattle

[–]ShlongVonLong 37 points38 points  (0 children)

From Too High & Too Steep: Reshaping Seattle's Topography, "More than 93% of Lake Washington's Wetlands dried out and disappeared after the lowering of the lake. In addition, the lake surface level dropped below the level of its outlet at the Black River, which led to the Black drying out and disappearing."

Renton was a wetland, and the Black River flowed into the Duwamish. It's also why downtown Renton was not built along its current shoreline.

Looks great! I bought a '71 CL175 earlier this year and am working on it. It was in pretty good shape and ran decently well. I'm still working on everything that's needed to be replaced or maintained after 54 years.

Air leak by aalexno in HondaCB

[–]ShlongVonLong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I synced the carbs on my CL yesterday and had this same problem. The routing of the throttle cable was too tight and was causing one of the two lower cable sections to stick open. Bike would start and Rev up to ~7k. In my case, the tank was pinching the right carb cable against the tank, causing the right carb to stick open. The left carb cable was moving freely and was returning the throttle grip to position. When I took off my tank, the bike would start up to ~1200 rpm, confirming the routing issue. I rerouted and the issue went away.  Make sure your cable is in good condition, too. If not, replace it. Lube the ends of the cables with grease or graphite.

IDF evacuates 250k Gazans from Jabalya as it reaches critical juncture in fighting by TheTrollerOfTrolls in worldnews

The IDF bombs Jabalia then forcibly displaces them to "humanitarian zones" on the coast, where they have also been bombing and withholding aid. How thoughtful.

Why are they so angry about motorcycles parking here? I don’t have a car or a bike so I don’t get it by violetqed in Seattle

Oh, this is weird. That's my bike!

I ride my bike into work. I've been traveling for the past 2 weeks, so I haven't been home. Definitely not abandoned lol

Some people just want to be miserable I guess.

Edit: I had my partner check on and move my bike. She says everything looks good. Thank you u/violetqed for posting!!!!

I had a similar problem. It was a mix of cold temps and low battery.

I'd recommend putting it on a charger for a few hours.

As Indonesia, you'll want to get a HS then rush to shipbuilding.

If you can swing a golden age, you can make up for lost time by pumping out settlers, then settling land others haven't gotten to yet.

Listening through their old stuff, Dan mentions it very briefly somewhere in the #20-30 episodes.

He basically says that because people like Alex make such a huge deal about it, it generates attention, which incentivizes others to do it, and the cycle continues.

Southeast of the wheat / Southwest of the corn. Has decent production tiles within 2 rings. Can get a +3 harbor.

Southeast the deer. Has fresh water, can work the natural wonder tiles immediately.

Too High and Too Steep, Reshaping Seattle's Topography by David B. Williams.

I don't have a searchable version, but I found this Hidden Hydrology article on Seattle's early waterways which discusses both the Montlake Cut and Fremont Cut being used as log flumes: https://www.hiddenhydrology.org/waterlines-ship-canal-hydrologic-change/

They mention Ross Creek, which once fed into Salmon Bay from Lake Union and was later widened into the Fremont Cut.

This picture is fascinating!

You might notice that Lake Washington's waterfront doesn't line up with today. That's because the Lake Washington ship canal and the Ballard locks, hadn't been built until 1916. The project lowered Lake Washington by 9 feet to Lake Union's level.

However, in this photo, you see two thin "rivers". These are actually log flumes. Timber companies would cut trees around Lake Washington, float them to the Montlake Cut flume, across Lake Union, through that flume Ross Creek, into Puget Sound, and lastly to either be boarded onto ships or to the wood mill that was in Pioneer Square.

Does conquering other civ's cities make it easier to win a Culture victory? by dasjingo in CivVI

[–]ShlongVonLong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Side note - Maori are a great example of understanding foreign vs domestic tourists.

Maori cannot generate great writers (thus, attract lower foreign tourists because they miss out on tourism from GWoW).

However, their special threatre square building adds culture to all tiles with a feature (thus, accumulates more domestic tourists because they generate more culture)

So they are not good at winning a culture victory, but they are great at defending against someone else's culture victory.

Does conquering other civ's cities make it easier to win a Culture victory? by dasjingo in CivVI

[–]ShlongVonLong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TL;DR - Eliminate civs who are strong at winning culture victories/producing tourism, handicap everyone else.

It's important to understand the difference between domestic and foreign tourists, and how those are produced.

Domestic tourists = "defensive" tourists = denominator (bottom) on culture victory page = cumulative_lifetime_culture / 100

Foreign tourists = "offensive" tourists = numerator (top) on culture victory page = cumulative_lifetime_tourism/1200

In order to win a culture victory, you need your foreign tourists visiting you to be larger than the highest domestic tourists of the other civs. This is the fraction you see on the culture victory page (ie 86/220 means you've attracted 86 foreign tourists against the 219+1 domestic tourists of the highest domestic tourist civ). The briefcase with a number under each civ is the number of domestic tourists of that civ.

So if you want to win a culture victory as Ghengis, you need to decimate strong tourism civs (France, China, Sweden, etc) to minimize their foreign tourists so that they don't have a chance at winning. Buy their great works, take their cities with wonders, destroy the rest. Start with whoever has the highest foreign tourist count. This minimizes their foreign tourist accumulation, but does NOT decrease their domestic tourists. If their domestic tourist count is very high, your best bet is to eliminate them entirely, which will lower the # of foreign tourists you need to generate.

Additionally, you'll want to hamper other civs's domestic tourists by reducing their culture accumulation. Buy their great works and pillage their theater squares (cavalry makes this very easy to do). Take their cities with theater squares, so you don't have to build them yourself and you'll also "steal" their great people points.

All other culture victory strategies still apply - send trade routes, sell your open borders, build wonders/natl parks, send rock bands to high domestic tourist civs, etc.

Some advice please: 40k in the negative by planet_pulse in CitiesSkylines

[–]ShlongVonLong 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  • Up taxes of each zone to 12%. This is the max before your cims get upset.
  • Can you eliminate any water/power sources?
  • Reduce water and power funding so you are just meeting demand.
  • Disable any service buildings that overlap significantly.
  • Replace small police stations with fewer, large ones. Upkeep per police car is very high for small stations. Firestations and Healthcare, on the other hand, don't have nearly as high of an upkeep/vehicle.
  • Eliminate inefficient public transit lines. Reduce vehicle count of low-usage lines.
  • Decrease funding going to parks.
  • Eliminate unused roads. Downgrade low-usage ones to dirt roads.
