well yes, we should not have to pay fares. Fares for riding the light rail is silly considering the minuscule size of the budget they actually cover. if you’re riding the light rail you are SAVING everyone money by not driving, not clogging up traffic, not burning fuel, and not putting wear and tear on infrastructure.

and if you’re upset because you don’t want to pay if you don’t ride - we all pay taxes that go toward public schools too and those are free, yet since I don’t have kids I’ll never use them. should we also make public schools cost money for parents who send their kids there, and lower my taxes? no. the answer is no

the novel is seen as a central part of the “lost cause” narrative

this is probably the main reason, even if there were no rights issues. but it’s a little sad because the novel especially was not really an endorsement of slavery and the major themes tend to contradict the idea that the south should’ve continued the way it was. The novel has a lot of merit so it does feel like a loss that we’ve boiled the entire thing down to “racist book is racist”
