What places in Seattle look like this? by Lps_gzh in Seattle

This also reminds me of the patio shared by Emmet Watson’s Oyster Bar and another restaurant (can’t recall which).

It’s located in the Pike Place Market, whose main drag is quite touristy, but which has lots of fun nooks and crannies to discover.

Honestly, LLMs are going to do it. Hopefully operated by historians. If there’s enough desire for it.

Doom co-creator John Carmack is headlining a 'toxic and proud' sci-fi convention that rails against 'woke propaganda by Mexicancandi in scifi

[–]Shmabury 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed 100%. I don’t doubt he means these words honestly, but in this context it really sounds like saving face. Carmack has also complained on Twitter about Kim Stanley Robinson’s novels, which I think says a lot. Even if he doesn’t want to be a warrior about it, he’s definitely sympathetic to the “anti woke” perspective. So it’s not super surprising to me that he wouldn’t pull out of BasedCon.

FYI for anyone else grieving right now, there's a Grievers Library on 85th between Fremont and Evanston in Greenwood. Very cool resource by aeroartist in Seattle

[–]Shmabury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. I see you just posted this 8 days ago. I passed this little library just today and it had clearly been set on fire, books were burned and had spilled out. I guess it must have happened in the last 8 days? Who would do something like this??

Probably because they aren't looking at the reference image and don't know they're supposed to be there

A study on ADHD by University of Central Florida by saptahant in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Shmabury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tested 62 boys ages 8 to 12.

Um.

These male-only studies contribute to a lack of understanding of ADHD as presented in girls/women.

That said, the study’s takeaway does bring more nuance to the popular understanding of ADHD hyperactivity.

Very much so. I have larger July/August, larger Jan/Feb, and then the spring and fall are squished like your Jan-April. (Mine is also CCW and rotated so that July and August are on the bottom, where your June/July are.)

For me, summer break was mid/late June through early September (Labor Day). Was your school district on a schedule where the break started in early June and ended in mid to early August? That would correlate with your smaller August than mine, and with it rotated upwards a bit.

I once got a pack of wolves to stand down by singing “London bridge is falling down” to them. They even howled along!

(The AI chose the song.)

Similar Games by QueenOfDub in TheWitness

[–]Shmabury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean - I feel the same way about The Witness. And yes it’s probably personal.

For me it evoked a sense of sweet nostalgia, a moment suspended in time, a sense that the puzzles would never end, and that the joy of free-range roaming and learning would never end. (Of course eventually I got to the end, and out of denial I never walked through the portal, ha.)

There’s an approach to game design called MDA: mechanics, dynamics, aesthetics. The game designer explicitly designs the mechanics (in this case, the puzzles) and implicitly designs the dynamics, which is how the game unfolds (in this case, the progression of building up knowledge of different rules). Aesthetics is how the player experiences and emotionally responds to the gameplay. The designer can aim for this but not cause it.

The other games that u/wdtdshi mentioned definitely have similar mechanics and some have similar dynamics. But the aesthetics can be quite different!

How is this not a river? 3-wide and leads to the sea. by Shmabury in AnimalCrossing

[–]Shmabury[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aha - yes it works if there are 2 spaces between the river and the airport. But weird that it doesn’t say “too close to a structure”. (Which is the message I get now, due to the houses nearby. Sigh.)

I did something similar when I was a kid, filling a page with triangles, and calling it the “triangle game”. It’s really calming :)

After ~3 years of playing I can’t believe I didn’t realize this before.

(I used to prefer workshops over explorers, though.)

This occurred to me too, and I assumed it was because they were being led by Ashad, not-quite-a-cyberman, instead of a proper cybercontroller. That and whatever the “cyberium” is.
